Samsung NX1 - all sorts of tests imaginable

Speaking of video tests, here's a tough test for any camera's AF. This was shot after the new firmware update was applied. Select 4K if you have a 4K capable monitor ...
FWIW, any monitor benefits from a higher quality source. That was true with old B&W sets running off cable rather than off a rabbit ears and it's true of any monitor accepting 2560 vs. 1440 vs. 1080 vs. 720, etc. It's also true with regard to the dynamic range and the color palette.*

OK, if you have a B&W monitor, the difference between F65 and NX1 will probably be marginal.

Hope you can post it soon, looking forward to it.

I can't imagine going back to shooting regularly with a DSLR though.
The C100 (without top handle) passes as a DSLR most of the time, so not much "stealth factor" to gain by using DSLR.
But there are other aspects to using a DSLR for filming and considering the price of the NX1 the C100 (and many others) stink;)
I admire the NX1 from a technological point of view and hope to see more videos, where it has been put to work by pros like you.

The question really ought to be whether NX1fills two requrements -

1) the minimum image quality/work flow required for the job;

2) the bang-for-the-buck visavis the competing products.

It seems that the second criterion is quantifiable while the first is fairly subjective.

I couldn't agree more. The difference between shooting HD with a good quality HD-only camera and performing an HD down-rez from a good quality 4K source can be almost 'night & day' in terms of overall detail & quality.

Damn- sold me the camera- again. Did you do a lot of grading, or is this camera as close to WYSIWYG as it gets to date? Gorgeous shots- really nice roll off regardless of stated DR the NX1 has.

Well with the latest update, DR gamma is pretty flat, so yeah, you need to do some grading to the footage, which is good. Some contrast and saturation and done.

Macgregor - Is that a reproduction or the real thing? Sweet either way. Love all the dents from shaping the body panels and that exhaust note. Mmmmm.....

It's pretty decent. Easy to use, two dials, everything seems in place.
I wish we could configure the shutter as the record button and the playback is a bit strange but other than that, great handling. Best DSLR for me right now in terms of usability/performance/price.

Great documentary macgregor,
from exposure point, some shots seem a bit loose highlight, the driver shirt, 5.52 and similar, some highlight clipping on the car aluminum body seem natural. (possibly exposing about a stop lower and pulling shadows in post?) Which settings you used, if don't mind sharing? His face is totally cinematic in interview, looks like shot on film. 7.26 and next my fav. shots, amazing, totally film.

Do you feel dynamic range is about equal to Sony cameras, when its graded, can you get similar skin tone from A7s, hypoteticaly?

off topic,
do you know I function on 16-50 2.8, does not work as crop in video mode, just photo?

Veeery nice. And I loved the content (I'm always inspired by people who make awesome things basically on their own).

Wow that was great. Watched twice because I was so into the story the first time around.

Camera looked great!!

Never bad to have such a nice subject.

What lenses were you using?

Finally this camera makes it into capable hands to show what type of quality it is able to produce. Excellent work here and great production value through and through. I'm pressed for cash but this production may cause me to hold on to my nx1 a little longer. By the way Mac, you were able to nail exposure in theses shots. Looks like the Nx1 shined through in the DR department.

Awesome job! I forgot to look for "camera" stuff right away because I was taken in by the story. Great music choices and the sound of the car is worth the price of admission. The camera looked great. Hands down what a wonderful value for under $5,000.

Very cool.

I didn't get any of the samsung lenses when I bought my nx1 body, but I am tempted to get some of the pancake lenses they have.

The entire segment where he's running the engine out of the car was amazing!
