Samsung NX1 - 4K @ H.265!!!!

The interview with the Samsung rep - lots of talk about the possibilities of firmware since the thing has so damn much hardware horsepower. But this was mostly regarding stills and some gimmicky stuff.

Firmware coolness from Samsung would be:

Maximize video possibilities like higher frame rates, higher bit rates, max quality from HDMI, killer remote controls.

Open-source the camera with a developer's kit and see what the market comes up with.

A camera this capable being open-sourced would really be a groundbreaking thing to do - everything about the NX1 is Samsung wanting to be a major player in prosumer and pro shooting. Having the balls to open source the software would be a major story to a lot of people, not just video shooters.

I was scheduled to go to a press event in NYC last night, but couldn't make it for personal reasons.

One of the presenters in a booth there was Samsung Imaging, and my colleague told me the NX1 was on display. I could have actually held and tried it myself, asked questions, etc... but alas.

Hopefully he got the rep's contact info, I'd love to inquire about it.

I tried to get a review copy through Samsung's USA PR... I have a fairly high-profile arts project coming up, thought it would be a killer way to test the thing. No go from that dept., damn it!!! (At least they replied...)

I've met some of Samsung's PR group, most recently at an expo in NYC where the camera was on display. I was there to cover camera tech for Techcitement.com. The guys didn't know a lot of the technical answers to my questions, so I was told I would be put on a waiting list for a demo unit. We'll see if that actually happens, as I'm told the waiting list is already quite long so it will likely be after the holidays if at all.

Maybe someone else here can get their hands on a unit first!

Michael: "Open-source the camera with a developer's kit and see what the market comes up with." -- According to Andrew Reid the camera's OS is Tizen, a Linux derivative, and I wonder if this might make the camera easier to hack if there was no official desire to release more of it's performance?

Seriously, I feel like the first manufacturer to do this would get some serious cred. And it's TOTALLY what Samsung needs to do if they want to leapfrog up the food chain - which seems exactly what this camera is meant to do for them.

If they can do optics as well - really nail those big pro lenses - it will be interesting.

But for now, some geeky coder squeezing every bit of detail & DR out of that body, doing raw or compressed raw video even, upping frame rates... would be very cool. Everything points to the body having untapped potential, somebody tap that.
