Rumour: No 5D Announcement until 2012?

Let me start out by saying, that I love my 5D mk II. Video wise it leaves a LOT to be desired, but still wise I find it amazing.

Therefore it hurts me to read the front page of Canonrumors today...:

http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/07/no-finalized-5d-mark-iii-yet-cr2/

No 5D announcement before february 2012??? And then add quite a while till it's actually released?

This is in my opinion the biggest mistake Canon could make. If Nikon comes out with something brilliant here in their August announcement, I bet a lot of still folks will change over, and I know quite a few video folks who like myself have sought other ways than Canon. Sony FS100 is nice...

Anyways, unless Canon makes something incredible for the 2012 announcement they will forever be one step behind. Only thing keeping me back at the moment is my L glass, that I cant be bothered to sell at the moment. But I will reconsider in case Nikons next still camera turns out to be something good.

I might be out of the loop here, but isn't Nikon a few steps behind Canon currently? Their 7000 finally reached the 1080/h.264 mark while Canon has the 5D2, 7D, 60D, T3i, T2i (and any others I'm missing) in that same category. I'm not sure what you're looking for with the 5D3, but it's possible you could find it in one of the other cameras.

I don't know. I don't see Canon as being left behind at all in the DSLR world.

Of course the FS100 is nice. So is the AF100. It's kinda hard to compare those to ANY DSLR, though. You're at completely different price points.

Yep. Thread starter is glueless.

I think the reality is Canon's competitors don't have a $2499 Full Frame 35mm Body to compete with. These guys probably have a working prototype for the 5D Mark III already. If push comes to shove they could easily send the blueprints over to the manufacturing plant and produce limited quantities for a soft launch anytime they wanted.

The truth of the matter is the 5D Mark II is selling so well that nothing is forcing them to do this. We need competition, but unfortunately nobody else has the same vision or goals as Canon's DSLR divison.

Seems that Philip Bloom agrees with what I posted...

Imo you guys are naive. You hold on to an old image of Canon, one that is not fitting for the current state of the company. Comom, they even openly admit that their still and video departments are detached and not working together really well.

The 5D mk II is OLD... it's outdated, outlived itself several times. Just because you sit back hoping you won't need to sell you Ls and go Nikon, Pana or Sony, doesn't meant that this is what is needed for Canon to get their heads out their asses. How old is the 5D by now? 4-5 years? That is completely unacceptable in a world of technology, because it is NOT that good a camera (except on the still image side...).

They will lose out on this ride. But I guess we'll have to wait and see come Feb. 2012.

Yeah, it's pathetic. So many fullframe video cameras out today, what are they thinking, that they're UNIQUE? Buncha losers... wake up Canon!!!!! Nobody's using DSLR's anymore! Canon SUCKS!

....or, I'm just having a period.

So Philip is not happy because Canon doesn't make IMAX quality camera for 3k€. Is someone else doing so? What superior FF cameras have other companies announced? If Nikon releases FF camera with better video codec this fall, will you sell your Canon glass and buy Nikon stuff? When 5D MKIII is released next year with superior video quality and features compared to Nikon, will you sell your Nikon stuff and buy Canon again? Canon is the leader and remains so as long as someone else releases FF camera with better video quality/features. Get over it.

people need to remember that the 5d2 is a stills cam first and damn good one, its old but continues to sell. i dont think upgrading it right now is a main priority for them, you cant blame them for riding that wave as long as possible. strictly concerning video, there are alot more people still shooting with the camera and enjoying it, then there are people complaining. aliasing and whatever issues aside, its still going to produce great images and its still desirable to both shooters and clients. the bottom line is its still doing well and its still an amazing camera. if people arent happy with canon right now, move on for the time being, you can always come back.

I'm looking forward to see what DIGIC V brings to the party, but I'm not sweating it because I'm too busy making my film! However good the cameras are now (and as an old timer, I'm grateful for the use-ability of a DSLR compared to my 16mm Bolex of 30 years ago), and however much better they get next year - and the next year, and the next year... It's still not going to help you. If you don't know what to shoot (your script), how to shoot it (your cinematography skills) or have an understanding about tieing all this into some sort of entertainment (your directors interpretation) or innovation (arthouse aspiration), no camera on earth can make up the shortfall. Invest in your pre-production, then use whatever camera you can afford at that time. Are there any cameras out there so bad that we would warn people about not using them? Most cameras have issues, but most cameras are good enough these days; usually it's the ideas that aren't good enough for your camera. When you're writing stuff that exceeds your camera, someone with money will probably put that problem right for you. In the meantime, let's enjoy the technology, enjoy learning the craft, enjoy this forum! Cheers.

The 5DmkII is not quite 3 years old. That is pretty standard in the professional DSLR world, or for any professional technology. Professional equipment does not need to be minutely updated each year to increase sales, because professionals can see through the marketing hype. Professional's buy a camera and expect it to live up to years of hard abuse (I know plenty of photographers still shooting on the original 5d who are quite happy), do the job it was made for well, and pay for itself 100 fold. Consumer technology moves faster out of marketing necessity and competition, whereas professional equipment is updated when sales start to slow because the equipment no longer meets the stringent demands of working professionals; ie it becomes outdated. And judging by the amount of 5DmkII's Canon are selling right now, it's certainly not outdated.

The 5dmkII does what it is primarily made to do (still photography) marvelously, which is why it is so popular. Additionally, it also happens to offer video recording with an IMAX sized image sensor. How many other cameras can do that? And how many other Cameras can do that for $2500.

Could Canon give us a 5DmkIII by the Christmas? You bet, but why would they when they are still selling so many mkII's and when they have very little competition. This is business & the real world, and when the money stops pouring if from mkII sales, Canon will have the mkIII ready and waiting.

Haha I love this gem:

it is NOT that good a camera (except on the still image side...).

My fridge is not very good (except at keeping my food cold).
My Couch is not very good (except for sitting on).
My blanket is not very good (except for keeping me warm while I sleep).

I could go on...

how old is the 5D..... announced Sept 2008 and really was selling by Jan 2009 , so 2 1/2 years. 5D was Sept 2005 and shipped in volume Jan 2006. So the 5D mark II is still on a normal life path. Jan 2012 would be around the time to start thinking the mark III is late.

I also don't know a still shooter that uses it that has been looking for an update yet.

Their are fundamental advances in chip fab processes that will enable 4x the processing power in the same space and nearly the same power consumption/heat envelope as the current 5DII IF Canon waits another year to bring a new camera to production. Why should they rush to produce a new model before then when the results would not be as advanced as most would like to see? Sometimes the practical engineering requirements for what seem to us as users to be no brainer features have to wait on the underlying technology cycles.

I agree with what people are saying, but I do think the 5dii is a bit of a special case because, for video users, it is more of a revolutionary than evolutionary product. Among the still shooters I know I get very little sense of real impatience for a 5diii, but that's not so much the case for video shooters, and that's not just because people always want new toys.

Partly the impatience is specific to the 5d. It's still got the best sensor of pretty much any video camera in existence, but in terms of ergonomics and dealing with some of the issues associated with dslr footage, it has fallen behind some of the cameras that have come since, and in some cases well behind. So for people who love the image out of this camera and do not want to compromise it, there's some impatience about still having to deal with the aliasing and moire and breaking you neck to see the screen and so on and so forth. Yes, there are always going to be people hoping that the next camera will perform miracles and solve all their problems, but even among more realistic video users I think there's some legitimate cause for impatience here.

And for me at least, part of that impatience also has to do with just wanting to know where this is all going and what kind of camera I'm going to be using for the next few years. DSLR? Mirrorless? AF100/FS1000? Since I still do quite a bit of stills work and prefer the size and ergonomics and build quality, I hope it's going to be a dslr, and I'm am willing to make some compromises. But if I'm not going to get a clean image, if features are going to be handicapped so as not to compete with other cameras, if I'm never going to get such basic things as a headphone jack, then it's going to be hard to justify sticking with the dslrs.

Granted, none of that stops from shooting now with what I have, the 5d is still a fantastic camera, etc etc...but there is an awful lot of uncertainty about what comes next and so I think it's not entirely unreasonable that folks are starting to get impatient for answers.
