Rumour: No 5D Announcement until 2012?

I don't get it. It is a still camera with video capability for photo journalists. That is what Canon intended with the video capability. It makes nice video and everyone all of a sudden is hailing it as a video camera and expecting Canon to develop it into an indy film camera. I don’t think it is going to happen that way. They were pleasantly surprised with the added market, but it is primarily a still camera and will continue to be viewed that way by Canon. Any additional video capability will be for the journalist to make web content for their news organizations.
Just my take on the whole situation.

I don't think so. I think thats why it was such a big deal for technicolor to come out with cinestyle (shows Canon's motives). If you believe the rumors that EOSHD has published, it looks like the video and photo business structures are being shaken up within Canon.

Seems that Philip Bloom agrees with what I posted...

the-state-of-play

Imo you guys are naive. You hold on to an old image of Canon, one that is not fitting for the current state of the company. Comom, they even openly admit that their still and video departments are detached and not working together really well.

The 5D mk II is OLD... it's outdated, outlived itself several times. Just because you sit back hoping you won't need to sell you Ls and go Nikon, Pana or Sony, doesn't meant that this is what is needed for Canon to get their heads out their asses. How old is the 5D by now? 4-5 years? That is completely unacceptable in a world of technology, because it is NOT that good a camera (except on the still image side...).

They will lose out on this ride. But I guess we'll have to wait and see come Feb. 2012.

Are you on drugs, out of your mind, from the future or possibly all of the above........ Yes these Canons can advanced their video features, but they STILL shoot amazing quality footage a lot better than Many Many Many video cameras..... Relax dude... If you want something better go buy an Af100 or the likes.

Personally the 5d is an amazing camera with awesome video quality!

Its one of the best photo cameras in existence.

Its a unique video camera. Technichally its a very poor video camera. Technichally. In reality, it just looks damn good at first glance, and on the internet. It totally has a place iin the world.

I'm excited for higher iso noise performnace and slightly higher resolution. If canon had a pair, they'd make the 5D mkIII 15MP, and use bigger photosites, and modern chip technology to achieve a grainless camera.

That would be awesome.

Canon split the 1D series into full frame ("s") and 1.3 crop frame (for fps speed performance), so you could say there is a precedent. I agree with you TimurCivan: if there were a high resolution version to keep the stills guys happy and a lower res version with phenomenal low light and good downscale video quality from the Digic V, that would shut everyone up!

Except me.... I would want both versions! :cheesy: I recently bought the 5Dii over the GH2 because I need a high quality stills camera AND video. If they split the line I would keep the 5Dii for stills and get the new video version.

the release of 5Dmk2... had already greatly ****ed up the professional video equipment sales
they tried so hard to make they exclusive... like the music industry.... 10 years ago...
now their sale is much better than any other competitor... plus they have their own pro video sale to take care of
pushing it to the next level might **** up the pro industry even more...

just 2.5 years ago.. to shoot okay 720 like video on hvx... will cost 6k with ps2 cards and that was the low end...
now... a 700 cam look much better than hvx

If there were an out-and-out performance version (perhaps using twin processors) featuring a modest res full frame sensor (capable of looking deeper into the dark than ever before with low noise), it may not need a video function if it could record 24/25 4k size jpegs every second for a useful time! It might need an external recording device to achieve it, and an electronic shutter to replace the limited life of a mechanical shutter, but that would be some camera! We would be moving out of the video era and into the high-speed stills era of motion pictures. Meanwhile, back to the real world...
