Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

So its pretty much a7s + recorder. Onboard recording isnt too great

It's long-GOP so not great for fast action but I reckon for a lot of shots it would be ok. You can record uncompressed to a $345 Hyperdeck shuttle to get the best 1080p image until the Shogun hits the streets. I hope there's some more new recorders @ NAB.

that atomos shogun is mighty impressive.
I hope theres a way to record 96fps from GH4.

seriously though that A7S is impressive as well as the GH4.
Although the A7s beats the GH4 in image quality & lowlight but the GH4 has the right codec, 10bits & HFR.

Sorry, but to me those clips don't beat the raw cameras as far as DR is concerned, or even a C100. Not seeing it.

Maybe that's because it's gone through 3 generations of compression  Time will tell but so far it looks like an awesome sensor.

With a Shogun it's 4k for 4k :2vrolijk_08:

About the compression, I agree...that's why I'm saying I don't see it, yet. The sensor is a good spec and the profiles they include are nice and the video looks pretty good...but I feel there are still questions - Rolling shutter, true video DR, and how the codec performs under a difficult situation. Only time/thorough reviews will tell the answers on those.

I think it could really save my arse on a few shots in the film, most of it's going to be shot at night and my plan was to spend a few thousand on LED blondies. Maybe I could get away with redheads (or a few candles) With a 50mm f/1.2 and a speed booster moonlight might be enough with this thing... crazy.

Ok, here's a really dumb question.
Why the heck, with such a small form factor of the a7s, has Atomos chosen to make a 7" screen for it?
It's so much larger than the camera and people are going to mount it to the hotshoe?
Really, this kind of thing is just stupid. It says to me once again that the people manufacturing aren't shooters.
Unless of course it wasn't really made for it and that whole speech is a bunch of marketing malarky.

By the way the pricepoint of the A7s should be around $2600.
Atomos is talking about a sub $5k package with the shogun and the camera.
We know the atomos is around $2K, so you do the math, taking into account manufacturer recommended vs street pricing.

I know for sure there's one camera from NAB I'm getting, hands down.. but this one priced more than 1800 or so... well the image looks great!

Lulz. It's for the old blind bastards like us.

I've got a SmallHD AC7 and I love it, I think it's perfect for shooting a feature, it's super light and I got a Chinese mini noga arm for it which is mounted on the front of my rig, it's perfectly weighted with a v-mount battery (5D MK3) which powers everything on the rig. Looking at the OdysseyQ7 weight I don't expect the Shogun will be any heavier. I've built a rig with carbon rails that goes over both shoulders for extra stability. 7" is big enough for me to look over the cinematographers shoulder to check framing. I'm gonna be busy holding the boom pole.

I was thinking the same thing. My only guess is that the electronics inside require that much space or close enough to it that they couldn't go with a 4 or 5 inch screen.
But then I've never been a fan of cages, rigs or hanging things off my DSLR. I hate the fact that I have to hang my H4N off my camera and would much prefer a vertical grip with a single XLR jack on the left side, since I only ever use one shotgun mic anyway.

I want to see comparisons between GH4 4K internally recorded footage downsampled to ProRes 422 HQ HD versus internally recorded slog HD footage from the a7s for both overall image quality and how much you can push them in post.

What's the upgrade from the 1D-C canon would need to release? This camera seems a tiny bit off from being like a $4000-$5000 C100 that does 4k, when you include the recorder and maybe a mic attachment. Sure it's form factor would be a mess, but a kitted out C100 is a mess too. The main weakness would be the battery of the Sony. They're both only 8-bit 422.

There's been talk of a new APS-C camera with a hybrid viewfinder from Canon, and it's not a 7D replacement apparently. So there a bit of hope? I'm willing to drop $2.5k on a 4k 8bit internal/10bit external APS-C camera. I wonder what the compromise with that camera would be however. Floor seems to be slipping away under the C camera model, but it's happening slowly enough that Canon already has their replacements getting into late development stages. These things take years after-all, the A7s has been developing for 2 years now?

On my next feature, I am going to be busy holding a donut and chatting up the script girl.

looking forward to some very messy 20+ pages of discussion tomorrow morning
you people let me down: only 5 new pages!

It looks like the MK3 in dual ISO mode only without the aliasing. I reckon it's cranking out 14 stops, how is that possible recording 8bit?
Because it's not shooting linear. Once you apply a gamma, a log, etc., you can fit as much DR as you want on an 8-bit clip. You'll just have less values per stop of light. In this case, if the camera is delivering 14 stops of DR with slog2, each one gets, on average, 18 values. In the 5D2, CineStyle gives you 25 values per stop of light in the midtones, and it's problematic; but the codec here seems to be A LOT better (even if it's also based on H.264 and has about the same bitrate).

For the A7s with slog2, sony cites the same "1300% Dynamic Range" claim as with the F5 and F55. That means that the A7s should have the same DR as the F5 and F55. Anybody knows how much that is, compared with other cameras?
Here's more about what that % means:

Also: remember when S-Log was a $3000 upgrade? Yeah, that was just 2 years ago. What's the price of this new camera again?

Really? I can't stand the 1DC at all. The rolling-shutter when in 4K is ridiculous. And the files sizes of the MJPEG, considering it is only 8-bit, are simply too large to justify the image it gives - which I've found doesn't grade very well.

It grades pretty well just don't use Canon Log with the 1DC.
