Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

This cam seems interesting and depending on the price, if indeed its around 1600 to 1700 I will pick one up. If its over 2K I will stick with just the GH4 and call it a day.

^ since it takes the hdmi and xlr and combines them into sdi... I'm guessing it will
but it's cheaper to just go with an atomos shogun

My understanding was that the XLR signal passes through the camera first, then out through the HDMI, then through the SDI... so getting the Sony XLR unit and adding the Shogun would definitely seem the wiser option.

I don't htink the YAGH was designed to be a very flexible unit, doesn't even work with the form-twin GH3, it's just an add-on to the GH4 and possible future cameras.

Really the A7s needs a 4k recorder that's compact and not too expensive to deliver on its value proposition. Something like the 4k version of the Atmos Ninja Star.

I don't plan to get a 4K recorder, at least not at first.
Clean 1080p out of a huge sensor, with a good codec and loads of DR, is already beating every other option out there right now at this kind of price, if you ask me.
This is a mini-C100.

In theory: about half a stop better than the A7 and A7r in almost every thing they measure
In practice: probably about the same as the A7, which means a bit lower than the A7r:

Irrelevant, though, since that's RAW stills and the main users for the A7s will probably be video shooters, and for us just the inclusion of slog2 is a HUGE advantage.

Like: really, if this thing has the same DR as the F5 (as Sony's 1300% wording implies), it's a DR monster.

From what I see here, recording on board (10:00 onwards), the F3 has nearly two stops better DR than the C300 (nearly half a stop on the highlights, about a stop and a half on the shadows). And the F5 should be slightly better than that (slog2 vs slog).
In this size and price, absolutely crazy.

Maybe you've found your new camera, Samuel? I didn't think there would be anything for me this year but, I don't know, these new cameras that read out all the pixels without line-skipping - it seems like we've moved up into a new level for small-camera video.

IIRC, the DxO score is not sensitive to resolution. So I'll bet that the A7s goes right to the top of the DxO charts. I wonder if it'll finally be able to beat the high-ISO performance of the D3s/D4?

The reason A7 gets a lower ISO score in DxOMark then then the A7r is because of the fact that A7 has lot of its sensor space used by PDAF pixels.Compared to the A7 a year older Sony RX1/RX1R as a much higher score because it doesn't have those PDAF pixels. So since A7s is marked for sensitivity ,I have no doubt that it will exceed the A7r and even the Nikon DF/D4s in DXO mark score.

I think I have. I just need confirmation that DR is as good as Sony says (same as F5 slog2), because it seems there's nothing else coming out that can compete with it (in my very limited budget, and with my taste/needs).

Bad news is: there's no excuses after this, anything not absolutely awesome falls on me, and sitting on it and not shooting great stuff should not be acceptable. Oh, my... :)

slog and 8-bit shouldn't match well, in theory: you get around 18 values per stop of light, which should mean banding and other issues once you grade your footage

but in practice... I think this is nearly as clean as it gets:

probably because the internal codec is strong (same thing happened with C100: people -including me- complained about 8-bit only, but in the end the image is clean and that's all that matters)

edit: always guessing that DR will indeed be stellar; it looks good in the clips we've seen, but I still need a more formal confirmation

edit2: Den Lennie has updated his post:

as it turns out, his 4K video is the one Sony released in youtube, with the sakuras
I completely agree with what he added at the end of the post:
I will add here that already there is a barrage of moaning on the 8 bit vs 10 bit argument. Please put that to one side for a moment, put down your mouse and look at the images.I had no concerns whatsoever on location, nor did we have any issue in post or colour grading.
Yesterday I saw this film projected and guess what no issue at all .
For me its always only about how good the image looks.

We just that Ninja Star to record ProRes 4444. I wouldn't be surprised if the DXOmark measures closer to 15 stops. The dynamic range in that vimeo clip gives the image an organic feel like the Alexa and the F65. I want one today!

LOL...so many overstatements in this thread. the image is nice and clean...like I would expect from Sony. But...for example...the image from inside the boat...was very contrast(y) to start off with. It looked...um...bad. then all of a sudden...bam...everything inside the boat and outside could be see. That does not tell me much. It just shows a high contrast image flattened out. A lot of cameras with normal shooting have a contrast(y) image. But not like that. But it looks impressive from one extreme to the other. Let's just wait until we find out what the REAL dynamic range of this camera is before overstating it. LOL I want to see a less clinical look to this camera and a more////cinematic look myself. Trust me...I like it...but....
