C200: Rumor: Internal 4:2:2 recording coming to C200 via FW update

The GH2s and 5D Mark IIs did do that...I can't tell you how much love I have in my heart for the 5D Mark II and 7D! And T3i!

T3i was my first DSLR for video! I also have a special place for that camera and the original BMCC.

...and that's when Canon may give the masses what they want because they won't have to protect the more expensive camera.

After meeting with and working with Canon USA on several projects, I will be quite surprised if this comes to pass. They just don't seem to do this kind of thing. Especially with the timing. We aren't seeing a C300 MKIII for NAB, won't for Cinegear and possibly won't see it until 2020. By then, the C200 will be almost three years old. I don't see them upping the feature set of a three year old design. I'd love to be wrong on this but if past performance is any indication. They're not even fixing all of the glaring firmware operational deficiencies (we listed dozens of them in another thread) of the C200, much less adding new functionality.

Remember what we expected when this site launched and we were all shooting with or, in my case, couldn't afford a DVX100B? That camera cost $4k back then, which would be a little under $5,700 in today's money. One of it's biggest features was shooting in 23.976 in 16x9. Now for roughly that money you get a C200B/Ursa Mini...
Canon, somewhere on its corporate site, has a history of digital photography. The first digiback - and I remember if being brought up in all the major news wires then - was a newspaper quality (200K?) chip that was able to fax a photo over the telephone wires in a six minutes time. That allowed the photogs to send pictures to their respective global employers from the 1984 political conventions almost as fast as they took them.

Unfortunately, in 1984 they couldn't upload it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

PS. As PD said above, Canon isn't likely to upgrade an existing model. The DPAF revolution aside, its history speaks otherwise.

PPS. I still anticipate that their next mid-high end models will be a slightly stripped down C700. Of course, my predictions on the NAB were not entirely on the mark.
