Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

No USSR or Fascism here. In fact, no politics... period.

+100 ...this is the real "qft". Preventing people from speculating on markets/products and not allowing us to voice opinions because "we're not entitled to it" falls under Fascism.

Fascism?

You can't be serious.

Help I'm being oppressed! Here we see the violence inherent in the system!

You know....this is "that moment", right?

The moment when we are all hoping that "Charli Brown will finally get to kick the ball!" :)

We just want to see someone "get it right". I know that Canon's track record isn't something to brag about, but I am encouraged by their DSLR announcement recently. That codec looks to have "us" in mind. (Cinema minded folks) When we see footy, we'll have a better idea, but I do think that this is the moment we have all been waiting for: The moment they address cinema quality footage with the proper codec/tools.

Red claims that they already have achieved that. Kudos to them. On this forum, we'd like to see it for under 5K. Maybe just a bit over, but we'd like to see it as cheap as possible. For folks who want it for 1K....go buy a GH2, hack it, and make a movie. For folks who want F3 quality for less than F3 price range....Or AF100 cost but better than AF100 image quality. I guess this is the moment of truth: Scarlet or Canon. I certainly hope that one of them "get it right".

I was using them facetiously to make a point...

Can we not use the term "free-market" either? Because some people may be apposed to it, and it also falls under politics. :cheesy:

Which brings up the point of it being bizarre that there are no specs on it besides all-I frame, 300mb/s, and still H.264... what would be the point of having a 300mb/s 4:2:0 8-bit file? Isn't that a bit... overkill?

Seeing as you've only been around here for a month and with such a low post count, I wanted to make sure you didn't "go there". Rock on with your facetious fascism...

If it is 4:2:0...yes....I think most would agree that would be silly. So, I think most of us are hoping that it is a "hint" that it is more. Many do the math as say that 4:2:2...and mmmaaaaayyyyybee 10bit is feasible. I'm certainly hoping so....if not....it will be a wee bit of a "Canon Epic Fail" for me. Not sure what others think?

Well I've seen it. A picture. With the new WA zoom on it.
And some really shallow mount and red(colored) mount adapter on the lens.
The camera is small DSLR size. Had RR accs on it (maybe we should ask them about it).The pic is floating on the internet. If you look carefully enought you'll find it. I did......
And yes it's 4K

Awesome! Thanks for posting the pic or link! :)

Guys, both Red and Canon announcements are a week away. Why not just dry your panties out until then? Somebody said in here, it's about making films or videos, shooting. I hope Canon puts out a printer that looks like a Scarlet, just to drive some of you nuts! Until then, I will enjoy my Af100 which makes a very nice picture...

Because it's fun to shoot the breeze about cameras :)

Broadcast Engineering also seem to think Nov 3rd is a digital cinema camera announcement...although they might just be repeating rumors. But that would be pretty sloppy for a respected publication like that.

can you give us a hint where this photo is? id like to see it too.:)

No pic, it doesn't exist.

And the description doesn't match the "hairdryer".

Come on Optitek, show, don't tell.

The fact is that the Japanese broadcaster NHK insists that 4k Is only an intermediate format and that ultimately the highest resolution broadcasting format will be nothing less than 7680x4320 and will be called Super HiVision. If people think that NHK is not a major player then remember it was NHK that invented the original 1080i high definition format and all the major Japanese electronic companies followed.

Just because NHK wants it, doesn't mean it'll happen. The Japanese manufacturers wanted us to buy 3DTV's and that's been a pretty huge flop. They pushed Blu-Ray heavily on us and that's been a tedious and slow adoption.

NHK started HiVision in the '80's. It didn't exactly catch on. HDTV didn't become prevalent worldwide until just a very few years ago. if it took them nearly 30 years to get HD to catch on, why would you think 8K (or even 4k) would be prevalent before, say, 2040?

Doing the math from the Canon USA source, it's about 350 Mbps.

As has been mentioned, somewhere, AVC-Intra is H.264 compression. And, it's 10 bit, 4:2:2.

So, H.264 compression has nothing to do with 8 bit or 4:2:0.

Also, AVC-Intra is 100 Mbps. The raw numbers on this Canon "All-I" or whatever it's called point toward 10 bit 4:4:4.

If, and I do mean 'if,' this 1Dx does 10 bit 4:4:4 -- wow, Canon sure was listening to someone.

It might also make sense that this "all-i" will be a part of the November 3rd announcement -- and that's one reason they're holding back on releasing details about it.

Also, relative to Canon, they rushed out that announcement on the 1Dx (six or so months ahead of release?). That means they threw a bone to people who won't be able to afford what's announced on November 3rd -- if any products are announced on November 3rd.

+1. All sensible discussion points. We'll see what happens, but I share the same views.

Whoops. I deleted my "entitlement" post about a minute after I posted it but was too slow! I guess I just find it kind of crazy that people can find ANYTHING to complain about these days in terms of technology.

I see everything these days as a total bonus. The FS100 is a major upgrade in my eyes over a 5D in so many ways. But for some it's like they want every upgrade to be revolutionary. Everything has to be faster, smaller or bigger, better, cheaper. I mean five years ago if you'd told people what the price and specs of an FS100 would be in 2011 their chin would have hit the floor.
