Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

IMHO, Canon could care less about releasing a camera that stomps the Epic or Alexa as some have speculated. Canon knows where their bread is buttered, just like Apple. The high end professional market is just a drop in the bucket compared to the money they make from the lower end consumer market. That's where the big money is!

Precisely! The 5D as a film camera is a steal even with all it's flaws. The MKII film thing was a welcomed accident for Canon. Now that they're aware of that market they will cater for it to a point but not in spite of their core market of pro and enthusiast photographers which is why I'm not expecting to see a DSLR with XLRs anytime soon. But things like: uncompressed thunderbolt out, a fix for moire and aliasing, a better codec, rolling shutter reduction, 4:2:2, 10 bit out, 60p, won't compromise the camera for their core market. But as Canon is a semi pro video camera maker I do expect we will see an S35 video camera too (with XLRs!)

In fact an fs100 or more an Af100 in terms of functionality, with a proper s35 video sensor at 2k with 10 bit output and 13 to 14 stop DR for $ 4000 to $ 5000 would take the market by storm. It would fulfill 90% of the needs of the large sensor camera market. The fs100 and af100 have both flaws in terms of image quality or functionality. The above spec would really be a mature product. When you see prosumer product at $ 5000 coming out with only 8bit output in 2011, there are really some space in which Canon can make a big difference.

If you extrapolate from their camera division sensor expertise (18 megapixel 7d sensor) they could easily achieve this with a 3/4 megapixel one for video. They could also produce their 4k pl mount one for $ 15 000 and it would be very nice but for another market. Now I also hope that RED comes out with a competitive Scarlet because it would put some pressure on price and competition.

This is from Bloom`s site:

According to my sources this is what will be announced on November the 3rd.

There will be two Cameras. A PL version in the F3 price range and an EF one more in the FS100 price range. Crews have been around Los Angeles and in the Mojave desert area shooting demo material for the launch presentation.

4:2:2 in camera recording, the tried and tested XF codec, which is rather spiffing as I have it in my XF105 and it’s nice and robust AND accepted by HD broadcasters…Full HD is most likely. The XF codec and 4K would be a struggle.

Canon is prepared to deliver in quantity at the beginning of the year.

What about the 5DmkIII? This is less solid but “the Mark III will be announced next month”. Does that mean before the November 3 date?

One drawback on these rumored specs: The XF is an 8 bit codec. It can't do 10 bit. Correct me if I'm wrong, I hope I am.

Hehe, maybe next time Canon will get smart and give Bloom a camera and and an NDA so he doesn't spill the beans.

I hope Canon improve on the FS100s design. A slightly smaller, lighter, and weatherproofed body would be cool. A DSLR body would be ideal but I don't think we're going to see the most optimised for video sensors in DSLR bodies. Hopefully I'm wrong about that. After 3 years my 5D is quite beat up, I don't think an FS100 would have survived. $5000 is out of a lot of peoples price range. Around $3500 I think would entice a lot of DSLR users. If it totally blows the FS100 away in dynamic range and body design then I guess I might have to pony up the $5000.

$1500, and we'll talk. Yeah, yeah, save it, I know. BUT. That kind of capability for $1500 is coming, and you know it - if you are not providing a lens, it's totally doable... cost of electronics just keeps dropping. Now, when exactly it's coming, I can't tell, but it is coming. As far as I'm concerned, the image quality is already there with something like the FS100 or AF100. Give us a low-light capability like the FS100 has, and that IQ, and you got a deal - niceties like better ergonomics, ND filters etc. are also a given (look at the AF100) - now the sticking point, as you mentioned, is still the price - but not for pros, since pros make money from their work, and if a cam can earn you enough to justify its cost, it doesn't really matter what it retails for... after all, that's how people buy Alexas. But for the amateur or aspiring prosumer, it's very price sensitive. That's why if you can deliver the best of the FS100 (low light capability, IQ) and AF100 (ND filters etc.) for $1500, it would set the bar and be a runaway success. At that point it almost doesn't matter if it gets any better in the IQ department, or cheaper still than the $1500 - it's met 99% of the requirements for those kinds of consumers. So the question is, who is addressing this market? It won't be Canon this time around (Nov. 3), but in the future, who knows?

Yeah right, Alexa/Epic specs, uncompressed 10 bit thunderbolt output and everything in a waterproof DSLR body for under $3000?

I guess some folks gonna be disappointed on 11-3.

Why would Canon sell an S35 HD video camera for less than their 1/3" models? I expect it to be a bit more.

no lens, less electronics.... not saying it will happen though.... they will charge what people will pay... But there is no reason a larger sensor should cost more than a fixed lens 1/3" model in this day and age... especially if they go the FS100 route and skip HD-SDI, ND filters etc

if all this is true id say itll be 6-7k
the main reason af100 and fs100 is cheap is beacuse it recorded in avchd now if canon does do it with mpeg2 4:2:2,etc like xf, itll atleast be much expensive

Why would they skip these things? Then the camera would have no advantage, especially since the AF100 has both.

To bring the price down.

All canon need do is bring out a camera that is equal in specs/price to the FS100, but records to 4:2:2 codec and they will have a successful camera.

Personally, I'm hoping for a slightly pricier, better spec'd camera at around $7k-$8k... features like the AF100, but with s35, increased DR, better low light and 4:2:2 codec

No way. You have an entire industry over the last few years that has embraced the form factor of DSLRs and created tons of products already sitting in the homes of people who love it. If they came out with a camera with some of these improvements but didn't have HD-SDI, etc. you'd still find the majority not giving a care for the AF100 and going right for the DSLR form-factor.

Canon has a great advantage here since there's been an infrastructure built around these cameras. One thing is sure, whatever fixes they do make or new features they do add or don't add, they're going to sell a boatload of whatever the MKIII is.

Sure, if they stick to the Mk II price range. If they go up to $6-7K, they have to add features. Simply adding 4:2:2 isn't enough, particularly since Panasonic has added 10-bit 4:2:2 to AVC-Ultra, requiring a data rate no greater than that of AVCHD. I expect to see this new format, called AVC Long-G, added to the AF100's successor (as well as 10- or possibly even 12-bit HD-SDI) and probably the GH3.

My $.02.

It certainly would be awesome if Canon released a camera that fit snugly between the AF100 and the F3. I know that I would be in the market for something like that. For various reasons, it's a little difficult for me to believe that's what Canon's going to announce...most of those reasons have already been mentioned here.

I don't think it's going to be a printer :) But, you never know. Couldn't imagine it's the Ron Howard project - that's already been announced. Don't think Canon has acquired Technicolor, or Kodak, or Fujifilm, or RED. Those things aren't announced via premeditated events like this.

So, could be a camera, whether it's the dream-machine we're all hoping for or a more typical late-to-the-game Canon product.

Why would it not be a series of cine lenses? Not saying I think that's what it is, but why not? I'd think they certainly have the capabilities for the production of low- mid-grade cine lenses. And there's definitely a market for them, regardless of what large-sensor camera you're using.

I thought about that also... remember the baby prime guy with the zeiss... Canon could just take their still primes and put them in cinema housing... and make a killing with all these cameras... but I think its some type of camera... 4k would be nice... but an F3 with slog already and 1 to 120 fps... an I'd be happy with the 15k price...

Canon needs to start shaping expectations here. Start the tease campaigns. It's a looooong time until Nov 3rd.
