New Canon consumer camcorders HV40 24p like the A1

I bought my girlfriend a Canon HF100 and figured out a way to use AVISynth and ffdshow to remove the pulldown and bring the files into Premiere CS4. It's not perfected yet. Premiere occasionally hiccups. But if you'd like, I can type up a how-to when I get home. That way people could add on or correct.

I use Aspect HD to capture all my 24P HV20 footage, it splits the scenes, and removes the pulldown perfectly. I can then edit these files with my 24F files from my XHA1. It takes a bit longer to convert the clips to Cineform files, but this is an unattended process. I'm assuming that NEO scene would work just as well.

Exactly. You guys over in Europe pretty much never have to deal with this, but it's a pain in the patoot if you don't have the flags in the data stream. All professional and prosumer cameras put the flags in, so nonlinear editors can automatically and instantly strip out the unnecessary fields and restore the data to its pure original 24P form. Canon didn't put the flags in the HV20/30 data streams, so you're stuck with hassle if you want to try to extract the 24p frames. It's not automatic, you can't just tell FCP or Vegas to "remove pulldown" because they don't know how to.

People have come up with virtualdub workarounds, but it'd be so infinitely easier if the flags were just put in the data stream where they belong.
For Final Cut Studio 2 users Apple has a white paper describing how to do it, Final Cut Pro 6: 1080p24 workflow for Canon HV20 camcorder.

They didn't add the pulldown flags.

They added the pulldown flags in their other formats, and on AVCHD they just record 24p natively. Canon has always added the flags in the XL2, XLH1, XHA1, XHA1S, and other "prosumer" models, but they don't add them in the little consumer cameras.

Is there need for a pulldown when editing media recorded in 30p? I m editing using sony's movie studio platinum. When i play the files on the computer the image is interlaced. I thought 30p supposed to be progressive. camera used for recording is canon hf 100.
thanks

I get the same thing when editing in both FCP and Premiere, I shoot using a Panasonic PV-GS180. Is there a way to easily fix this?

My technical skills aren't anywhere near to most people on these forums, especially dealing with frame rates and the like.

Cheers!
Simon

P.S. I've learned SO MUCH since finding this forum, you guys are awesome!

I just got an HV40. Yes, it shoots 24F and the resulting file format is HDV 1080p24. It drops right in timeline and ready to edit.
