w0w my first thought was, damn it's always scary asking for thoughts on the imternet. Not any one thing caught my attention contentwise, but I laughed in the end.
sorry i didnt read all the thoughts and nitpicks but i saw:
It was clearly the work of 2 gunman, one clearly on the grassy knoll.
Loved the 3d credits, missed the copper in the crane shot and when he says : all the doughnut-shops closed ?'' should have been a POV of the copper.
Nice CC.
the good thing about your work, and not subjecting your self in the cricism too deeply is that, it's clear that you're willing to learn from your mistakes but still stick up for what you believe in (pertaining to your shorts).
Good on ya.
I can look through about half of the negative criticisms on this thread and see who's being rash and who isn't.
I thought you handled the content and the dialogue well. The picure and sound quality was great. Most importantly, you took risks. With the "drawl", which was extremly well done. You made it uncomfortable for the audience to watch cause every reply the kid made, was harsh, I thought he was gonna get the ***T kicked out of him right away. The execution and timing could use some work (with the drawl), but overall it was great, and this is something to be proud of, not many can pull it off their first try.
And the cop beating the kid was a risk because of the camera shake, it worked, strangely, it was not at all distracting, I liked it. You keep that up. As for the SFX, let me tell you why that worked, it was humous, because they clearly did not match up with the beats of the stick, nor did they sound like it was actually coming from him. It reminded me of a Videogame. Similar to the reason why montage sequences work, your camera shake, and SFX looked great!
In any other case you probably would have needed, clear groans and hits, which Im sure everyone including yourself everyone else is aware of, in which case I recommend recording your self - screw finding SFX on the internet, it's a waste of time and limits creativity.
All of your shorts had content, and had something there that a viewer can appreciate, and it's very clear with time and putting your skill into practice, it will only get better exponentially.
Showed your short to a bunch of filmmaker friends last night, they loved it. One of the guys is a top DOP over here and he was asking about the in camera settings and what lenses etc...as he thought that the look you got was fantastic. I re-read through this thread and managed to pick up a few things: colour correct in Fusion 5, redrock M2 adapter...any chance of some more specific details on how you achieved the look?
As always, thanks for the words gents, and ladys...we are working on a 5th short that I think will beat the hell outa all this stuff content wise, can't WAIT to get it shot!
Anyway, as far as how I shot it, used the hvx200 at 18fps for the cop beating and a sigma 17mm wide on it f2.8 No lighting in the entire short, all sunlight, we really like to go ALL out when it comes to color correct, our fav work comes from people like The Mill in London and NY city, and big budget hollywood work, so we allways try to give our work a polished feel...can't stand to do anything less!! even if the budget does not exist! used some old Nikkors for the long lens stuff, 85mm prime and 135mm, I have a custom made 21foot camera crane with remote pan/tilt head for the opening shot we used that, along with all the toys in our 3tin grip truck, dolly track flags etc, etc...
everyone stay posted for our next short, gona be FUNNNNN
BTW the reason we are doing this work is to get a body of work for the cellphone market, short, sweet, funny, and well produced. if anyone has some contacts at mobile distro companies or mobile providers..I would love a hookup
keep the FEEDBACK coming
The Look:
many many layers of color correct in floating point under Fusion, don't really record how I do it, just play and play and play till I like it...what can I say??
