Rode Videomic Pro and 7D Any benefits given the 7D's AGC?

Alright thanks you've certainly shined some light on this whole audio thing. Thanks again for your patience!

Hey, its all worth it if I was able to help.

Far too many people are convinced that there is no possible way to get good audio out of the camera, resorting to sync everything in post. While you can't go wrong doing it that way, there are times it is not practical and not at all necessary. Yet the way most of the regulars on this forum talk about it, I wouldn't be surprised if newbies are being scared into buying recording equipment for their freaking home movies!

I should get my videomic pro in tomorrow or friday and I have a 7D I will let you guys know how it sounds compared to the videomic. Also I just joined and this is my first post haha.

My thoughts are that since you can't lower manually the 7d's audio with the +20db setting the noise floor is still going to be too loud and you will hear significant noise. If you can lower it manually then the noise floor would be lower and you wouldn't hear as much noise which unfortunately you can't do with the 7d as of now and is why i still record two sources of audio, one being the H4n which sounds great and the other the videomic /pro which i probably would only use if something messed up with the h4n or in a quick run and gun style shoot. Also I have been an audio engineer for the past ten years so I can fix most of the noise problems in protools anyway.

I just got my videomic pro in the mail and I hooked it up to the 7d and tested each of the settings. With the +20db switch on it actually does reduce the hiss noise that the old videomic was usually giving but also the signal is pretty loud so I would recommend your subject be at least 3 feet away to reduce any possible clipping. I had an air purifier on in the background and it really pics up that noise though. I just tested it right now very quickly to see and just wanted to let your guys know. I am happy with this product so far in the first few minutes I have had it and I will fully test when I start shooting for an upcoming documentary:)

Awesome Definate that is what i wanted to hear. I wanted to know if it was more beneficial to have the VMP over the VM for the 7D specifically.

I fyou could do a quick and dirty test and upload it that would be absolutely great!

it is definitely worth it for the smaller size and better build quality alone. I will try to make a little test video tonight or tomorrow.

the reason i'd get it is because i'm not thinking about the 7d alone....yes thats what i'm shooting with NOW...but i plan to stay with dslr's for a while since they are in my prince range...and who knows what the next wave of dslr's audio is gonna be like. Think ahead guys (and only a few bucks more)...so u dont have to buy twice.

I would suspect you still need to figure out a way to disable the AGC on the 7D even with the new Videopro, but maybe the gain boost solves that? (I can't imagine that's the right way, but ???) . Does anyone know for sure? I'm going to build a cable splitter to try this. By the way iPlay, once you delete the noise channel, if you haven't worked this out by now (some months later), you simply copy your mono track to the second track if you want stereo sound, or set the mono channel audio to play out both channels in the NLE.

The gain boost does not fix the AGC. The AGC really kicks in when there is little audio content to pick up. (it doesn't hear anything so it turns up the mic)
The T2i and (I assume ) the 7D really need either the MB hack or the MP3 player hack.

The 60D I have now can get quite usable audio with my beachtek. Just set the manual audio to a shade below 1/4 vol and pump the beachtec up all the way. One filter in post to raise the floor level a bit and it seems to be pretty good. The problem with all the DSLRs is the preamps aren't that good evidently, so you can somewhat improve it by using the amp on the beachtec as much as possible and NOT the one on the cam. (and with the beachtek you at least have a couple led meters to see the volume coming in.)
