Rode NTG-3

Thank you very much, I asked Rycote and it would be the windshield kit 4, which would cost twice a s-300. I probably will go for the s-300 (s-series). I can almost buy a SD mm-1 with that money.

I'm surprised - the new kit 4 is about 50% more than the S-series as far as I remember.

It's $629 on BH, but I believe they sell the old ones. The #3 won't do for the Rode NTG-3 as I found out over the Rycote customerservice:

"The way we work out the sizes for the kits are as follows. Microphone length 255 mm Plus 50 mm for the XLR = 305 mm. So unfortunately you will need the Windshield 4 kit"

Yeah, 290 bucks more.

The Neumann KMR81 shotgun is almost the identical length of the Rode at 256mm. The Rycote site "finder" tool for the S series lists the S-300 as the right kit for it, same as for the Sennheiser MKH416 at 250mm length. The WS4 is the kit recmmended for both those mic's in the full windshield system so that would be the one for the Rode as well. Trew lists the S-300 at $349 US, the WS4 at $629 US.

I had the Rycote kit 3 before I got the NTG-3 and it does fit the G-3, that is if you can live with the G-3s XLR plug sitting in the rear Kit 3 clip holder.

If anyone has the Kit 3, try it with your NTG-3 before buying the recommended Rycote Kit 4 or any other rigs. Works for me.

RODE have a new blimp for the NTG-3 almost here.

Cheers.

It may just fit in a kit 3 but it won't work properly in it.

You need air around the mic. to give it the wind protection and there will not be enough air in a kit 3.

You can easily turn a kit 3 into a kit 4, though, by buying the ext-1 extension and a size 4 Windjammer.

Thanks John yes I saw that. Rycote sure put some thought into their designs. Years ago I bought their kit 3 for other mics, then tried it with the NTG-3. Seemed to work Ok blocking all the wind I came across.

Cheers.
