"YMTM:N" A short comedy series

I'm the DP on a short comedy series for Channel 101 (http://www.channel101.com) called "Your Magic Touched Me: Nights".

It's a spinoff of another Channel 101 show that was cancelled, and we came back "Baywatch Nights" style (same character, new genre). It's very likely that none of this means anything to ya, but I encourage you all to check out Channel 101 anyway.

I shot it all on the HVX, except parts of the opening that we borrowed from a few movies. Also, the quality is pretty low on this encode, I'll try to get a better one up soon.

Enjoy episode one of "YMTM:N"!

That has real potential for more "episodes", very funny.

Thanks. We're hoping to keep it up. Episode two will be shot in a couple weeks and then premieres the last weekend in September. If it's good, and the audience likes it, hopefully we'll get voted back.

can I vote for it? How does voting work?

For now, Channel 101 is only a live audience voting. I think they might expand it to include the interneters, but not yet. I'd be more than happy to get your vote though!

That was really really funny bro. Great production design. Good acting... editing.. Dialogue. A real winner and again.. it's funny. I hope to see more and keep us up to date.

What else do you have in the works? I'm in pre-pro on my sketch comedy show and I have one CSI spoof I'm gonna try and pull off. You got this one down.

There's lots of potential for this for sure.... Loved it!!!!!! Loved the line... eww.. don't smell that, it's been up his butt. And the criminal at the end was friggin' funny too. CONGRATS and I hope everyone gets to watch it. A little edgy and stuff so some might be taken aback.. but most will appreciate such a well thought out and realized concept.

Show us MORE... I'm only gushing because most of the comedic stuff I've seen isn't this funny and well put together. Hope my spoof is as well pulled off. BTW, where did you get your cop jackets and such? I know there's magazines and all that.. just figured I'd ask.

I am going to be honest, I think it feels cheesy, maybe that is what your going for?

Thanks for the comments. Good luck with your CSI style show. As for the cop jackets, I'm not sure where they got them. I think it was a local LA props or surpluss store

Obin:

Channel101 is a live short comedy competition that happens every month in LA. So yeah, we straddle the line between cheesy and realistic. Everything from acting to editing...we try to emulate and parody different styles of shows that we like.

Plus most of these shorts are shot in 1-2 days and edited in 1-2 days, so a cheesy, low-budget feel is unavoidable. Because of that, we embrace it.

i thought it was pretty cool man. good work. i didnt actually laugh but i enjoyed watching the whole thing to see where it was going. :)

edited to add: by the way, did you get the rights to the music or did you guys just use it?

No, we didn't get the rights to the title song (the rest of the music is all purchased and royalty-free).

Music rights has always been a big concern for us, but even as Channel 101 got lots of attention from the media, we never ran into any problems. One series ("Yacht Rock") used probably 50 songs from artists like Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. Turns out that the artists themselves loved the series and have even referenced it at live shows. I suppose that could be taken as permission to use their work.

I don't expect Jay-Z or Linkin Park to do the same though...

The face punch was a watermellon filled with junk. Pretty low-budg, but the effect is hilarious.

The plan is to keep going as long as the audience will vote us back. We came in FIRST place this month, so we're hopeful that we'll keep going.

There are so many funny moments in these shorts! Awesome job! Lol, the whole 'fake' speaking Japanese bit is great!

I 2nd the tile of Dick Titty as possibly the funniest name I've heard on a show. Followed 2nd of course by Holden McGroin...

Man... LOVE your SKETCHES. This one was damn good again. I think that if they don't vote ya back... you need to just continue shooting them and hosting them yourself.. and make it into a collection... Some really funny stuff here!

When's the next one... They are so short and sweet they are like bon bons.. ya want another one right away! Love the cast... the dialogue... pretty much everything... and again DICK TITTY... man that's good.

All my friends like watching your shorts! The 2nd one I think is best so far! My roomates and I always laugh when he grabs his nose in the dojo and gets punched in the face, when the guy gets punched in the watermelon looking face, and when he speaks fake japanese. Wonderful stuff. You're lucky you have such wonderful actors and writing.
