Right Brain vs Left Brain - an interesting test

I bet a ton of us are "technical" filmmakers.

Actually I know tons of us are technical filmmakers.

A shame the whole left-brain right-brain nonsense has been determined to be...well...nonsense.

Unless you've had your corpus collosum cut, of course.

So then most film makers, artists, etc... are left handed?

I'm left handed, but I doubt most people on these boards are left handed, yet they all seem to be right brained.

yes, precicely. left handed people are right-brained. right hemisphere controls left part of the body and vice versa. that's why people with a right-hemispherical stroke have paralysis in the left part of their body.

I remember learning in intro to psych that the theory of left is right brain and right is left brain is no longer thought to be true, but rather it has to do with which hand you chose to write with at a young age, and you stick with it. This is why people are ambidextrous, why some kick better with the right leg, or with the left leg, wy they do things better with one hand for one task, while better with the other hand at another task.

you need to check your sources. there is no doubt hemispheric dominance is real. there is also a correlation in things like foot size (if you are right-handed your right foot is probably bigger than your left foot) etc. As for left- or right-handedness the debate has to do with ability rather than born preference. because many left-handed people were forced to write with their right hand they became ambidextrous when writing. but that didn't make them truly ambidextrous. true ambidextrous people have no physical dominance.

I still don't believe the left brain right hand, right brain left hand to be true. Are we really all left handed on these boards?

sorry buddy. this has been scientifically proven again and again. the most definite proof comes from the experiments with people who have had their hemispheres separated surgically. here's the link again:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_hand_syndrome

I've worked with people with this affliction and also people with strokes and it is blatantly obvious that there is a direct correlation.

On another note there is a statistically significant bias towards left handedness in artistic occupations. in other words, even though only 8 - 15% of the general population is left-handed a much larger portion of the artistic community (musicians, painters etc) are left handed.

there is also a direct correlation between epilepsy and "true" ambidexterity - 57 % of people with severe epilepsy are ambidextrous.

really? Hmmmm. maybe it wasn't Top Gun then. some flying movie. where a guy had left eye dominance but needed right eye dominance to be able to read the HUD in a plane or helicopter.

It was Nic Cage...in Firebirds. An awful movie.

Sean young alerted him to the whole left eye/right eye dominance problem that was holding him back in flight training, and they strapped an ugly hunk of junk to his head to help him compensate.

A sample of the great lines spoken in this lame duck disaster - "... a 1st class all American hero with his heart & brain wired together cooking full tilt boogie for freedom & justice!"

Ahhh, Tommy Lee Jones, is there any crappy dialogue you can't deliver?

I thought that I'd mention I have a pretty good technique for changing the direction.

1) Move your page down so you can only see her foot.

2) Practice changing how you look at it so her foot looks like it's going back and fourth facing away from you. It will not look like her foot is spinning, just going side to side.

3) Scroll up so you can see the entire body but only focus on the foot. Make it go back and fourth. "Release" your mind so that the foot now spins in one direction. Now, make the foot go back and fourth with the toes facing away again, and "release" her in the other direction.

This works shockingly well for me and I now have full mental power of this used-to-be-taunting gif.

Interesting test. I saw it switch at no particular interval.

Here's another one which is a similar idea but simpler and explains the results better:

http://www.web-us.com/brain/Visual_Test_Hemispheric_Dominance.htm

My guess is that most of the people on this site tend toward technical for sure with some that cross over into artistic/storyteller as well as technical expertise. Probably not so many here that are purely storytellers though. By its very nature, this site caters to solutions for mostly the technical difficulties surrounding indy productions. A few storytellers show up though.

Some of these other left brain right brain tests are more indicative of your result"

I'm pretty much split left/right 45/55 myself.

I am most definate Right BRain but sometimes lean to the left.

The self test gave me:

Your percentage score for the right brain is 57%.
Your percentage score for the left brain is 43%.

I am NO WAY a technical filmmaker; I am much more interested in the visual langauge than the technical bullshit.

I took several of these test after I saw this thread. On two of the tests, the results were that I was left brained. On over five of these tests, the results state that I'm right brained. I love my imagination but I also cling to my organized, attention to detail side as well.

I finally got it to change and after awhile was able to make it change at will. For me, it involved the pivot foot.

I haven't read thru the thread yet. I will after I post so as not to be influenced by previous posts.

Test Result:
I saw a very brief clockwise turn, maybe 1/4 sec, then continued counter clockwise. Now I'll go back and read the thread and verify what my parents have been telling all along..."You just aint right in the head kid. "

If you imagine looking at her from the top down then she's clockwise. If you imagine her from the bottom up then she's counter clockwise. It depends of if you look at things from the bottom up or from the top down.

I immediately saw clockwise and then after some study, counter clockwise.

At first I saw it as only clockwise, couldn't see it anti-clockwise, now (having wasted quite a bit of time looking at it) I can sometimes see it moving anti-clockwise, but not easily.

Interesting test, I'll be interested to test it out on a few friends - I'm almost certain my girlfriend will see it as anti-clockwise.

Ok, seriously though. A very cool test, that I can make switch almost on command.

The logical half of my brain has to wait for the right moment to allow my imagination to decide which way she's turning. :)

Of course we all have traites from both sides of the brain.. some more spread than others too of course.

And though brain dominance is normally directly dispreportional to handedness - most people are left-side dominant and therefore right handed.

However, sometimes this isn't the case. For example there are some prety convinceing arguments that Dyslexia is happens generally in those cases where brain dominance is not disproportional to handedness.

If you are left dominant and left handed; or right dominant and right handed, then you are much more likly to be Dyslexic too.

Like me, you're a bit more artistic than technical but still a little technical. Paraphrasing from the test results it was something like: "This combination usually leads to a very unstructured approach to solving problems through intuition and quick pattern recognition." These are also the people that make the best directors because they know some of the technical side but can also visualize what they want to be able to describe it to others and lead them in the direction they need for the project to go.
