Rigging the O7Q

I searched the Kamerar website, and they do show the "Pico Plate" for about $40. , but from your shallow depth of field left side photo, I can't tell how you connected (and with what Kamerar parts) the horizontal 15mm rod behind the 7Q to the two forward facing female upper holes on the Movcam cage.

Looks to me like standard 15mm rails coming off the handle, to this piece.
Then, two 15mm rails in an L shaped, paired together with this corner block.

Not a bad setup, a little too limited in range of motion for my tastes. Then again, I am using the Solid Camera solution, which I'm planning on shooting a little video of soon to show the different ways I set it up.

I do want to take a second though and say that I'm pretty amazed at how light and well made the SmallRig stuff is. I have darn near one of everything they make. NATO rail, handles, quick release blocks, corner blocks, 90 degree blocks... I'm a pretty big fan. Don't get me wrong, I have a small fortune invested in Berkey System pieces, but if I need something cheap and fast (Prime shipping!) then SmallRig is my go to. Hell, I helped a buddy build a DSLR rig from their parts and he ended up spending under $200 for rails, handles, blocks, offset riser, shoulder pad... Pretty awesome deal.

They do seem to have everything you might need. Like looking through a sweet shop! ;)

what are their handles like? Which ones have you tried?

One down side to the Movcam power bracket - the power cables come separately (including the O7Q cable!!!) ... and they want $145 for it!!!

That's exactly what I bought. I'd love to have the Solid Camera joint, but my pockets are on MMA...tapped out.

The issue here is how do you wish to use your Odyssey? Do you want it as a viewfinder monitor so that it is viewable when operating on the shoulder or do you want to operate off it from a tripod? From the shoulder it means that you'll need to get it up front and not in the profile of the camera but instead next to it. I would suggest using whatever mounting system appears nice but then putting a quick release connection at the end on the Odyssey so that you can quickly pop it off for packing in the case.

Thanks for responding. In all cases, I will figure out the handlheld version first, then have the option to place it on a tripod. I have a Movcam rig and the Westsideav mounting bracket. Yes, I'm mounting it in front (at least initially), and I've been thinking about a quick release. A quick release wants to be small, lightweight, strong, and inexpensive. Solid Camera has some options, and there is the Zacuto Zug system. Do you have anything you recommend?

If you have an EVF or are otherwise not planning to rely on the Odyssey for shoulder mount viewing, then I feel the best place for it is likely on rails at the back of the camera. Placed here it can work great for tripod use while still being conveniently located for stuffing in the bag without resetting. That's part of what I like about the Vocas solution, but you could replicate that with rigs from other companies as well.

Yes, I am considering this option too, and here the mounting seems easier. The Vocas magic arm solution seems a little "more than is needed" but so far I haven't come up with anything better. The technical problem is, "how to attach the 7Q to rails." Do you have any other suggestions?

A 16x9inc Cine Lock is a nice quick release device that can attach directly between the Odyssey and whatever bracket system you use.

The simplest way to mount it to rails is to use either a NebTek Cage frame or an Ocean Video Enduro plate. These backs for the Odyssey will both accept a Wooden Camera Lightweight 15mm rod clamp. Works nice & cleanly.

Mitch, thanks for your help. I had said, "A quick release wants to be small, lightweight, strong, and inexpensive." Well I suppose 3 out of 4 isn't so bad.

How do these backs work with various hoods? I've got the WestsideAV hood; I'm sure they won't work with that. Thanks again.

Both the NebTek and the Ocean Video attach to the back to the Odyssey7Q. This will not interfere with the Westside AV or the Convergent Design hoods, as they both mount to the side sockets of the Odyssey.

Kamera have a similar quick lock piece which is much cheaper, i just got one to look at and it seems to do the job perfectly. Shipping the cinelock to the UK is very expensive.

When I first looked at the corner block, I thought "who wants to carry one more Allen wrench on set?" But then I realized that this 90° angle would not be the place where you would adjust. (Just in case someone else got stuck in their thinking process as I did).

I just looked at the Kamerar quick snap (I think it's called) - looks good and cheap but they say they don't ship to the UK currently - where did you get yours?

Here's what he's referring to: http://kamerar.com/collections/rigs-stabilizer/products/quick-snap
This is also quite interesting: http://kamerar.com/collections/camera-accessories/products/pico-plate
Or the two pack: http://kamerar.com/collections/camera-accessories/products/pico-plate-combo

Yes I noticed the Pico plate too - quite useful.
The quick snap isn't available for shipping to the UK - who knows why? Looks like the other products ship from China - maybe they sell direct on ebay?

you can get it in the UK from cinegearpro, Derek Abel is the guy that started/runs that. Lots of useful bits and pieces.

I was looking for the cinelock but the price, shipping and so on is just too prohibitive for such a small piece of gear.

(i didn't even know kamera had a website, now i'm going window shopping..._

First I am assuming that by RAILS you mean 15 mm rods. If so, then this is what I am using to connect the 7Q to rods on my FS700. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/673064-REG/Redrock_Micro_4_25_0001.html and you can see pics here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...he-O7Q&p=1986452390&viewfull=1#post1986452390

It is also very easy to mount & unmount the Odyssey and allows for adjustment.

Thank you,

Very useful. Thank you. So this piece stays attached to the 7Q?

So this piece stays attached to the 7Q?

Yes, I leave it threaded in to the underside of my Ocean Video plate (however, it could just as easily be attached directly to the underside of the 7Q) and then I just loosen the blue knob on the RedRock MicroMount & remove the Odyssey from the rods.

Here is a better picture of the spud that stays attached to the bottom of the Oddyssey http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/690997-REG/Redrock_Micro_2_025_0002.html It's only a little over an inch in height.

so is this option still a no go? I'm looking to attach to my camtree rig on the top rails (knock off of the movcam)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tilta-TT-...L&hash=item3ce2d1a98f&clk_rvr_id=664391732469

otherwise it looks like its this system for me:
http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/movcam_303-1108
http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/movcam_306-0218
http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/movcam_rosette_rod_clamp

I'm just stuck on if i should get a v mount option and power from the back or use a standard sony battery on the front.
The idea of having to buy a load of expensive v-mount batteries, chargers, mounting system and cable isn't an appealing one but I can only imagine the front heavy weight pain. Anyone find it a struggle?

Also, this looks quite good, cant knock the price.

That hood won't fit. It says it is 19cm across but the Odyssey7Q is 20cm across. I guess for that price you could try to force it to fit. The eBay listing says it is for a 7" screen but the Odyssey is 7.7", plus there is about a centimeter area outside the picture on all four sides.
