10 OCTOBER 2006: POST-SUBMISSION RE-SHOOT PLANNED

Well, THAT'S IT! I'm SICK AND TIRED of hearing people say my story is weak, or that the story confused them, or that the killing was lame. THESE SAME THINGS ARE BOTHERING THE CRAP OUTTA ME TOO!!! So, I'M GOING TO FIX IT! So, THANK YOU all of you who pointed all of this out--I really mean it!

After showing the short to a few friends, we came up with a series of shots that tie the story up tighter, and offer more graphic/stylized, hopefully, less-cliched post-crash visuals, that live up to the level of the photography in the beginning of the film. These new shots will secure several story loose ends in a much tidier, much more clever way. I'm basically going to re-shoot the entire second-half of the short (everything after the emergency vehicles shot), and re-shoot all of the shower scene elements.

I am taking D&G's EXCELLENT suggestion of tying in some airport visuals at the beginning of the film with the jogging sequence. This, I believe will really help "bookend" the film much better than the simple opening beach/end credits sunset shots (I'll still use those too).

The shower scene . . . Total f*****g re-shoot. I HATE IT! Gonna build a shower in my backyard so that I can lay dolly track to shoot it, and also have enough light to use a high-speed shutter to get that "splattery water" kinda photography. Shower drain--total re-shoot as well. So here's the rundown (all of this is now pretty much already re-written). . .

RE-SHOOT—Entire shower scene with custom-built shower set.
RE-SHOOT—Additional jogging footage to include the airport runway in the background of the shot. This is the thematic "bookend" shot that D&G suggested.
RE-SHOOT—Entire "attack" sequence. Attacker will be introduced in a more clever manner.
RE-SHOOT—Entire "chase" sequence.
RE-SHOOT—Entire "struggle" sequence.
RE-SHOOT—Entire "killing" sequence—replace knife with a big rock instead, and have him bash the sh*t out of her! At least I can buy a foam rock this time, and make the killing a bit more brutal and realistic, and hopefully slightly less conventional.
RE-SHOOT—An entirely new "getting away" part of the chase sequence. This new, totally re-written sequence has much more "urgency."
RE-SHOOT—Entire "dead" sequence with a very high-angle master, plus added plane elements to the shot.

Also, I'll shoot stuff that I ran out of time to shoot/create, including . . .

MINIATURE PHOTOGRAPHY OF SCALE MODEL OF BOEING 737-700 PLANE
VFX OF PLANE EXTERIORS IN-FLIGHT
VFX OF PLANE CRASH
VFX PLATES FOR PLANE CRASH
BUILD PLANE WINDOW SET-WALL FOR GREENSCREEN OUT-THE-WINDOW SHOT (you all saw what I did with six Target chairs and a curtain--wait'll you see what I do with just a piece of Foamcore!)
PLATES FOR OUT-THE-WINDOW SHOTS

Will update in a few minutes . . .

Ralph, I can't wait to see your new updates.

You've just gota keep in mind.. some of these reviews are all over the place. People have their own views and some haven't reviewed at all.

Hopefully some of the comments made here will make your film that much better and having outside insights will take it to the next level.

What was that quote again about a film never being finished? :)

looking forward to seeing the next cut.

Hey Rez,

Wow, you really sound motivated!

I say, go for it. All your points are right on target for elevating this to something wonderful. Hey, I think I predicted a few pages back that we would see something from you that would be really special. I wonder if this could be it?

Your a great shooter but more importantly, you are really a resourceful and innovative type that isn't about to settle for less than your best. This is a formula for success.

Rez,

Seems like you got a game plan. ;)

Although, I think your story is simple and clear, the few elements you've talked about adding may help it be underlined for emphasis... Glad to see your not watering it down, though.

It's always tricky to decide where to put your resources as a film maker, and when to move on to another project. But, your passion to get this flick the best it can be is self evident

Speaking as another artist who follows his passions, I wish you all the best, and look forward to the results.

Thanks for the updates.

Incredible BTS stuff. I can't wait to see how the re-shoot turns out. Be sure to document the process (especially the greenscreen and miniature stuff) I'm sure everyone here is just as anxious as I am to see everything. Best of luck!

Acting: Thought your lead was fantastic.
Script: A nice story.
Direction: Fantastic shot choice/ storytelling going on here.
Music: Flowed and suited the piece.
Editing: Smooth.
Lighting: Solid and crisp throughout.
Loved: The follow shot when she started running (WOW tasty was it STEADICAM?), shower head shot superb, inside the plane shot (I was fooled best production technique of the fest, props! ), beach tracking shot, crane down when sunbathing, how you handled the plane crash, how the whole chase/ killing scene was handled and shot.
Hated: The stabbing stopping short.
Overall: I great film from start to finish, directed and shot superbly. Top job!

J.P.

PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS ON BROKEN CIRCLE (WE NEED EM!)

Second impression - I felt that in a way you were trying to amp up the horror element in the flick, which seemed at cross purposes to the thriller/drama aspect or nature of it. Specifically, when the attacher attacked, it felt somewhat incongrous to the greater themes involved. And the traditional "Psycho" type attack didn't seem as innovative as the rest of the flick. Also, I noticed you kept the same kind of music throughout the attack. Watching it, I felt that complete naturalistic sounds (breathing etc...) or a similar concordant msic, with different emphasis to isolate this event, may have been more effective.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing.... holy smokes.... word for word almost

rezfactor..... others have chimed in with good reviews and crits.... I will keep mine short and sweet

cinematography = very very nice.... very modern, very Sodebergh-ish... kudos

acting = at times felt a bit awkward but overall not too bad

story = I like the disjointed/metaphorical thing going on but I feel it could have been a bit more effective if some of the little things were tweaked..... but still..... it was very good

editing = a liked the pacing of most of it.... again.... there were a few "little" things that bothered me but nothing to write home about

overall = very good effort..... you have my vote for sure

This looked A-MAZ-ING. Probably one of the most (if not the most) gorgeous looking films in the fest. However, as has been stated before...your story lost me. If you're not big on story writing, you should find someone who is and either shoot a story they come up with, or tell them about some images you have in your mind and have them write a story around it. Seriously - your gorgeous camera work deserves a really good story. Your camera cries for it. "Please! Waaahh! Use me to my fullest potential!!!!"

Excited to see what you come up with in your reshoot.

And again, that interior plane shot in your living room - wowee.

Rezfactor, I cannot tell you how much this festival would have sucked if you weren't involved!!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed following your thread and posting with you!

I love the images you brought to the festival... some of the best by far!

I hope that you do more and that we can continue our open dialogue!

Congratulations and best of luck!!!

Been a blast,

Ted

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

PHENOMENAL camera work … some of the best I’ve seen, hands down. But I had not a clue what the story was about … completely lost the entire time. But back to the camera work, WOW! J

15 OCTOBER UPDATE 1.0: BORED WITH "RUNWAY"

Sony DSR450 frame grab.

Bored with "RUNWAY." Started thinking of a new project. Shot some footage downtown Saturday while we still had some clouds in the sky (clouds are real rare in L.A. skys). These frame grabs have all been "Magic Bulleted" with their "Grad Sky" plug-in. I really need to start thinking about buying that matte box and some ND grads soon . . .

Not really sure what to do with RUNWAY now. I think maybe I'll re-shoot a couple shots. That tie-in shot in the beginning with the girl jogging by the runway, I'll definitely re-shoot (thanks, D&G!). The rest . . . I dunno. I really want to start something new.

good job with runway, i was thinking, like how the hell did he get the authority to shoot inside a plane?! nice work.

Great shots (as always), but even more impressive is the traffic!

Looks like the 110 South near 4th street (over by LA Center Studios). Thats about as light of traffic as you ever see.

I gotta say, your images are making me jones for a 2/3" camera. I just shot a project over the past weekend on a SDX900 and it about makes me want to turn my dvx into a door stop.
