Response to Shannon's allegations

Recently some outrageous allegations against me were posted by Mr. Shannon Rawls, and have begun to spread through the internet. I’ve been asked to respond, but have refrained from doing so until receiving counsel from my attorneys. I have been advised that a basic statement would be appropriate.

Basically, Shannon was invited to be part of a large group of industry pros who gathered to do some comparison testing on the new crop of low-cost high-definition camcorders. As he and I and they would agree, this was a group of top-notch experts, whose goal was to examine and give expert opinions on the relative performance of each camera in the comparison.

While I am flattered that Mr. Rawls would think that I would be capable of pulling the collective wool over the eyes of such a large and distinguished group (a feat that even David Copperfield might find difficult!), let me state that no attempt was made, nor would it have been possible. The very notion is preposterous, and disrespectful to the others involved. With nearly a dozen industry professionals watching what was going on, and those people being skilled technical wizards like Adam Wilt, can any reasonable person believe that wholesale deception would be even possible?

I don't understand Mr. Rawls’ motivation to engage in what could amount to character assassination. While there, I found him quite personable and we (I thought) got along quite well. Adam, Jay, Nate and I all took extensive time at various turns to explain to him the testing procedures, the reasoning behind each test, the parameters that we were looking for, what would qualify as “good” and what would qualify as “bad” results, etc.

I flatly reject Shannon’s assertion that I had any intent or undertook any effort to shift or bias the outcome. I specifically stepped away from the testing process and had Jay and Adam establish all parameters and judge all results on the scopes; my role was solely to deliver the results from the Panasonic that were requested from the testers, and to offer opinions (along with all other participants). I did not set the agenda, nor did I influence the agenda; my job was strictly to make the event happen, and to make the Panasonic perform properly, as it was Nate’s job to make the HD100 perform properly and it was Adam’s responsibility to make the Sony perform properly. While it was unfortunate that we didn’t have a more expert Canon operator, it wasn’t for lack of trying, I had invited Nick Hiltgen to participate with us to represent the Canon, but he was unable to attend. I had also asked four other industry pros to attend as well.

While I do not wish to inflict this drama on Adam, Jay, Nate, Rush, Evin (or any of the other participants to this drama), I have personally asked several of them for a “reality check” to determine if they felt there was any truthfulness to these allegations. All that I have asked have responded that the allegations are baseless, that the tests were completely fair and unbiased, and I did nothing “sneaky” or “untruthful.” (I will let them speak for themselves if they so choose, although I hope they don't have to spend another second on this issue.)

I don't understand Shannon's motivations are in making these allegations, which may enter the realm of character assassination. It's something I hope to resolve with him privately if possible.

Unfortunately, Shannon was recently banned from DVXUser. I had no part in that banning, and in fact in private moderator discussions I went on record as saying that he should not be banned here for anything that took place on any other board.

I appreciate those who have offered words of support. I am also quite surprised at some who grasped onto these allegations as "truth" without taking any effort to verify the truthfulness at all. I would love nothing more than to just ignore this matter entirely. Unfortunately, rumors left unchecked tend to take on a life of their own. Consider the rumors checked. I do not intend to continue discussing this matter beyond making this statement.

I thank all those who participated, and who gave so generously of their time, talents, and efforts, and I apologize to them that they had to have those efforts tainted by this side drama. I've turned the footage over to Adam and Jay and will let them make any postings or comments about the relative merits of the footage.

I stand by every word I've printed regarding the review and this statement, and I only wish that we could have had a video camera there documenting the entire day, so that people could see that there are two (very different) sides to this story.

Barry, individual equipment preferences aside, anyone reading these forums for a few days could easily ascertain that you were a conscientious professional, and Shannon was.....not.

Carry on, my good man.

Barry, thanks for the response. And again, thanks for all the hard work put into the comparison shoot.

Barry,

Please disregard what Shannon said. I never believed any of it. Futhermore, that wacky thread he posted here yesterday was just so over the top. I'm glad to see him gone. Talk about drama queen.

This is isn't to say that I dislike Shannon, or that he doesn't know his stuff in some areas (he certainly has more experience than I), but I think having him around was going to be more trouble than what it's worth. I wish him the best.

Character assasinations are a pain. I believe you handled this in a responsible and professional manner. Thank you for all of your hard work.

Sorry Barry. Keep up the good work and keep on presenting what I see to be fairly un-biased reviews on many different types of equipment.

Never an issue, Barry. Your integrity and balanced views have long been evident here and elsewhere and I know how much faith and trust we all have in you and your talents. Absolutely nothing has occurred to adversely effect any of that.

I echo the numerous thanks of others here for your efforts.

Alas; the subject must go on (Hopefully a temporary issue)

I found the posting made by Mr. Rawls so contemptible I couldn't believe what I was reading. I find Barry Green to be one of the 'good people' I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with both in business transactions and in personal conversation. This list of Good People is a short one.

I banned Mr. Rawls. It was my move and I did so without consultancy. I found his accusations reprehensible and nuked Shannon from this community.

Some users here and at dvinfo border on unstable. Some think they are Cowboy's, some like to have drama and conspiracy, some think they are entertaining.

If you do not have anything to offer the community I will ban you. If you have nothing to do but stir up trouble and look for reaction I will ban you. If you act like an ass-monkey, I will ban you.

Either try and contribute and get along or go over to camcorderinfo.com to get your kicks.

Thanks for the clarification Barry - I read his PDF, only one thing stood out was the lack of representation for Canon - all the other cameras had excellent representation.

I guess his allegations was tainted by his frustration to that fact. I know you have repeatedly said before the tests that you will represent HVX, and as an HVX expert you did, and others will represent their own cameras.

I do enjoy reading Pappas, Walter, Shannon and all the other dissedent voices as keep they certain things straight and not let the board turn into one big Panasonic propaganda machine. As long as the argument is civil, professional and rooted to verifiable facts I am all for it.

Thanks for the good work, and for bringing it all together. I eagerly wait all the expert opinions from you, Jay and Adam (and if possible shannon's :)

Barry, I had the luck (misfortune) to read Shannon's "results" from the shoot at DVinfo, before it got yanked.

As for the "results" he promised, there were none. I had to plough my way through more than five (?) pages of rants against yourself and the perceived bias of the test.

By attacking the judge, he can cast doubt on the tests without having to justify his position by providing facts or arguing it in technical terms.

Look forward to more results.

As an XL2 owner, I think this is quite a significant point. I owned two DVXs before the XL2, and out of the box I prefer the DVX image. However, with a little tweaking the XL2 produces beautiful - and in my opinion superior - results.

If the H1 behaves anything like the XL2, meaningful testing of the camera would necessitate a DP in control of the unit who knows it inside out; without this we can assume the camera would underperform. By his own admission, Shannon doesn't know how to get the best out of the H1.

So, this aspect of the test was less than ideal, as you noted.

Having said that, Shannon's post was shameless and indefensible. As someone who has swtiched from Panny to Canon, I read your intial report on the tests with interest and I found your comments to be insightful, professional and objective. For someone with a big love of the DVX, you came across as fairly impartial - and as always Barry, well mannered, amiable and plain decent.

I thought your most telling comment, in the thread of your intial report, is that the HVX turned out to be less than a stop faster than its competitors, with comparable dynamic range - something you had not expected. There's no hint of bias there.

Pay no heed to Shannon, I'm sure few others will. The strange thing is that you invited him along, you must have known he was a wild cat before this thing happened. It's not the first time he's provoked, insulted, or enflamed others on forums. This time he took it to a new low.

You've built a long standing (and international - way down at the bottom of the world I feel I know you!) reputation on the web for your helpfulness, expertise and sincerety. It will take a lot more than one or two individuals with warped motives to tarnish that.

Thanks for your work. Keep rocking!

John,
Just in case somebody doesn't know what an assmonkey is, I present the Merriam-Webster definition:

ass- a stupid, obstinate, or perverse person
monkey- an appealingly mischievous person

Wha la!... A stupid, mischievous person.

Barry,

Thanks for all you do. Looking at these boards for the past two days has caused me so much frustration and annoyance that I almost swore off the boards altogether, so I can't imagine how it would have made you feel.

That there wasn't a Canon guy there is sad, but that doesn't really change my thoughts on what I want to know, because I'm just interested in know how the HVX performed. Not in comparison to the H1 or anything, just how that camera did with noise, etc. And regardless of not having a "pro" on the canon or even so called "bias." That can't influence the footage that I'll see from the HVX. I don't think it's possible for you to take noise out of footage otherwise we'd all put a mini Barry Green in our camera.

The most frustrating thing about Shannon's posts over the last couple days, besides his highly inappropriate character remarks about you, was the complete LACK of ANY content regarding what ANY of the cameras can do. He'd tease us with giving his "take" on things and never say a word. He has wasted SOOOO much of my last two days.

In the end, all of his bad mouthing of you has only hurt himself.

Maybe this is a bit exaggerated...

FWIW I don't usually get to spend much time talking shop here.
As it turns out finishing a years project and having the first downtime in a decade coincides with the transition to HD for us.

So I've spent a bunch of time reading and researching and viewing here and at dvinfo the past couple of weeks.

After reading Barry's initial overview of the test I frankly had no sense that he fell into any camp.

In fact having read some of his initial reports after the Expo at dvinfo and here, I found him frank and unbiased. He was upfront in his praise for the XL-H1's resolution and image quality while offering what he "expected" from the HVX given his DVX experience.

After the test he stated his surprise at the relative comparability of latitude and noise.
He brought the JVC "into the fold" which wasn't even in the discussion around this site, and actually got me looking at that camera because of his comments.

In other words, accusing him of prejudice is absurd, from an outside and pretty objective view point, Barry has been the most balanced of all the contributors whose opinions I've been reading so assiduously these 2 weeks (when you live on top of a mountain, you need to reach out for information).

It's invaluable from the netherlands to have folks in civilization to rely on. Perhaps more than most I rely on intelligent and honest information, and living on a farm, I can smell horse **** a mile away.

For his straight shooting and valuable input, I owe Barry a few shots of top shelf Agave Anejo.

Barry, in the words of Mr Dylan - don't think twice, it's all right.
