Resident Evil: Afterlife

And while those original two games were awesome (I actually read all the novelizations and enjoyed those too), I actually liked the cleaner graphics of the remake of number one and Resident Evil: Zero.

The first two RE games are classic.

I've actually never played the remake, and I have a Game Cube too. I should find a cheap used copy sometime soon.

The first Resident Evil was great. The second was...not so great. The third was good enough.

This one looks terrible. Mostly because of the 3D, which is quite clearly a gimmick here, and nothing more. I counted no fewer than 12 shots where things unnecessarily fly toward the camera IN THE TRAILER. I can't imagine how bad the whole film will be if that's how lame the direction is in the trailer...

I have no problem with 3D, but not when it is used in combination with an excuse to simply randomly hurl objects at the viewer. And that's exactly what we have here. Not only is it lame in 3D, but it's even more lame in regular 2D, as it makes even less sense and is more jarring there.

See, I always compare these movies to the old Universal horror flicks that kids would go to, watch in 3D, throwing popcorn at the screen, etc. I love the RE audiences. Everyone is just having a good time. I don't see corny style 3D (like from those old Universal horror flicks) being a total negative. I personally don't like 3D of any kind, but for the kids and teenagers who like it, I think this will be a fun flick.

I used to love these games when I was younger. Now I'm stuck playing Madden or Call of Duty 2 because I just don't have the vested interest in an ongoing game. I need quick win/lose, shoot/die kind of experiences so that I can actually live my life. lol And even Madden is kind of too long at 45 minutes per game. Thank god they didn't have online gaming consoles when I was a kid, though, I would never have left the house!! It was bad enough that we had chat rooms and AOL.

What a disgrace to the video game franchise this is... I wish Capcom would hire someone to reboot the series, someone who's got respect for the material.

You should check out Resident Evil: Degeneration. It's an actual continuation of the game storylines (Resident Evil 2 specifically).

I think the great thing about Resident Evil is that it most certainly can be rebooted with little effort. Alice was a completely made-up character anyway. They could easily make a Jill Valentine movie (with a different actress). I'm near positive that this will be the last RE film in this franchise. Assuming that it stays in the popular culture, I can see a reboot happening ala Resident Evil Zero. The entire concept of a heroine on a quest to save her male counterpart is still something that happens pretty infrequently in Hollywood. I think Jill Valentine or Rebecca Chambers would be great for that kind of storyline.

I'd love a film that was a little more subtle, more nuanced. Like a true horror/mystery. If you think about the culture of films the Resident Evil movies came out of, they actually stand up pretty well.

I think Silent Hill didn't really get its due. They were extremely faithful to the game and it was pretty weird and freaky -- maybe a bit too fringe for the masses, though.

Has there ever been a Really good video game movie?

Double Dragon-Sucked
Super Mario Brothers-Sucked
Mortal Kombat-Okay
Mortal Kombat 2-Really sucked
Tomb Raider-Actually was pretty good
Tomb Raider 2 (cradle of something)-Sucked
Any Uwe Boll adaptation-Don't have to say it
Final Fantasy-50/50 on that one
Hit Man-Not too bad

can't think of any more.

I STILL haven't seen Degenration, for some reason. I think I'm finally going to go to Best Buy and grab it.

If you think about what Resident Evil is, it's an homage to Zombie movies ANYWAY. What Paul W.S. Anderson has done is by far a travesty, it could've been equally successful by sticking a little closer to the origins of RE. The moment I saw her jump off of a wall and kick a dog in the head was when I lost all hope for Video Game to movie Translations.

Perhaps, though, you're right. A reboot does sound simple, just as you say about Resident Evil Zero which was a very fun addition to the collection. Recounting the RE history in that way was sick.

I think the primary "issue" with Silent Hill is also as you say: freaky for the masses. Also, it had a very disjointed approach. If I had to choose between straying too far, however, and staying true then Silent Hill is the best video game to movie adaptation to date.

Jill Valentine (the REAL RE version, not Paul W.S. crap version) would be my vote for a reboot, and going back to the Mansion format from the first one as well.

Sigh, though... I doubt it'll happen. It's just nowhere near as popular as Spiderman...

Way to go, team.

Guilty pleasure of mines is Super Mario Brothers. It's terrible but charming, but to me only. Hahaha.

I didn't like Tomb Raider at all, but I'll re-watch it for fun.

Final Fantasy I can't call a video game to movie adaption. Strictly because Final Fantasy's plots are (mostly) different with each iteration. As a major fan of the franchise (and just about everything that Square does) I can let FF movies pass.

Advent Children delivered great fan service and eye candy, absolutely not for the masses, though.

Haha.

That will forever be the movie I remember my mom taking my brother and I too when I was a kid, and NO ONE was in the theater, and my brother and I had a race down the aisle, which was pretty cool because you normally couldn't do those things in a theater.

AND THEN, I saw the movie, and for the first time had the thought, 'wow, that was a bad movie'. I'll never forgive myself for making my mom take us to that.

:::shudders::::

I can't stomach Advent Children. I own it and so just put it on with the sound off or if I want to watch something pretty while I'm falling asleep.

The real reason behind Advent children being such an epic fail is that it's dubbed. It was written and synched in Japanese and then re-written and dubbed for english. Resident Evil Degeneration has some issues because it was written by a Japanese team, but there wasn't the issue of having to lip synch English dialog to Japanese mouthing (like what happens in most Anime, which is why the dialog is often unbearable).

What people have to remember is that you have to support your franchises and genres regardless of quality. You pay money to see the Spiderman flicks and Blades and Xmens so that you get the occasional Iron Man and Dark Knight. Do you honestly think that Predators would even be in consideration if the AVP movies hadn't been moderate successes? For all intents and purposes the franchise was kaput. The AVP movies revitalized the property for a new generation.

And now we have Predators! Yay! We have Predators because people like me paid money to see AVP and AVPR in theatres. We then turned around and bought the special edition DVDs and Blurays. Do you think I LIKE owning Hulk?! God, I own both Underworlds!!! Van Helsing?!? Own it! I have every single Final Destination. Man, I have I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER...AND THE SEQUEL!!

But you support Jeeper Creepers 2, maybe you get something like Cabin Fever, Frailty. You spend money on The Grudge and Halloween remakes and maybe, just maybe, you'll get the occasional In the Mouth of Madness and Bubba Ho-Tep.

In the end, though, after all the dust settles, decade after decade the brightest will shine through and all the crap will be forgotten. So as time passes your shelves have only those classic Universal horror movies, Fright Night, Tremors, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Thing, The Shining, The Dead movies, The Evil Dead franchise, Robocop, Blade Runner, Donnie Darko, The Terminators, Dark City, Aliens, etc.

But if we don't support Brendan Frasier in the Mummy Returns, we'll never get Cabin in the Woods. If there wasn't some sort of a cult following for Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I saw the original 7 times in theatres, a personal record), we would never have gotten the television show.

On a scale, the Resident Evils are a treat compared to most of the crap I have to sit through in order to support the genre and properties I love. At least with the REs you can tell everyone working on the project is just having fun and doing whatever the hell they like, the same way they were making horror flicks back in the 50s.

Then whatever you do, don't get into Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, or Fallout 3. I feel like I need to clone myself 3-4 times over to get around to finishing all of those games in a timely manner.

Maybe a TV series? It would give them more time to build up the mystery and suspense. Plus, they wouldn't have all the money to go crazy with the action. They'd have to rely on good character development and suspense (like Lost or Battlestar Galactica), but then pepper the series here and there with some nice action/horror set pieces.

Silent Hill was pretty crazy. I think it is probably the best of the video game movies to date, and I'm not a big Silent Hill fanatic, as I much more prefer the Resident Evil games.

What I want to see is a proper reboot of Mortal Kombat, but done primarily by the Hong Kong film industry. If someone could actually write a good script from the source material, and then that was given to somebody like the dude that did Hero and House of Flying Daggers, then I think it could be huge. The key would be using actors that can actually do the martial arts and to shoot it like a marital arts film. Of course, we know it can be done with a mix of Hong Kong and Hollywood actors and fight choreographers (The Matrix, The Transporter, Blade). Hell, Keanu Reeves could play Johnny Cage, and Jason Statham would make a pretty good Kano. There's two big name actors that can do the fighting stuff for real, because they were trained to do so. Get a few bigger name actors in those types of roles, and they can then get a good asian actor/martial artist to play the lead character, Liu Kang.

An RE television series?!?!?!?

Man...THAT would be awesome. One big ass location for the entire first season? Just 7 characters in a never-ending mansion thing? And the end of each season could be like the end of each game (obviously with completely different storylines from the games). Man, where is HBO with a GOOD idea?? 13 episodes of this I'll take over another crappy WW2 drama any day of the week!

We do have The Walking Dead (based on the comic series) coming to the USA network. The comic series is very subtle and cool and takes place in a post-apocalypitic zombiefied world. I think we can expect great things.

What RE gives us, though, is the MYSTERY element in the zombie genre. I love all the puzzles and working things out. I would love to see that aspect really translated effectively to the (small) screen. I used to love all those old Mystery shows on PBS, but I was always annoyed that they wouldn't actually give you the necessary clues to figure anything out -- it was always some information that we, the viewer, never got that proved the murderer was so and so. Perry Mason did the same dang thing. I would love to see real clues and real facts given to the viewer regarding puzzles in a series like RE that actually gave them the opprotunity to work it out between shows (kind of how Lost invites people to speculate on things).

Yes! An RE TV series...

Milla and Maynard in the trailer. Here's another collaboration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qja7b6j9oUU

We'll see how this one goes. RE1 and RE3 both had difficult dynamics (pre and post zombie apocalypse = BORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRing). I enjoyed RE2, AVP1, and Death Race: these three films all had a workable premise (zombie apocalypse, Aliens in underground pyramid, and criminal dystopia, respectively).

I watched this a few nights ago.

I can only guess why the writer/director, Paul W.S. Anderson, chose to copy almost every cool VFX shot from the first Matrix movie, within the first 15 minutes of the film.
They used the slow mo bullet time in addition to the target actor falling backwards to narrowly miss the bullet , the clones, the falling backwards through a hi rise window while pointing thier guns, the freeze frame mid air ninja poses, to name a few. I didn't take notes.

After doing some googling I see that the star of the movie, Milla Jovovich, is also his wife.
I recognized her, while watching, from the movie The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis. And yes she is drop dead beautifull.

Towards the very end of the movie also, they threw in some more Matrix rip off shots.
Why? I have no idea. I was a little insulted by it. Well, more than a little, but, who knows why he did that.

Other than that little annoyance there was some pretty cool stuff in there and it was a really good looking movie I thought. And it doesn't hurt that I can watch Milla Jovovic, anytime, anywhere, in anything.

This movie deserves some kind of award. I am actually impressed with how much badness they crammed into even the first 30 min.

Watching this now on Netflix... just wanted to say that being a huge fan of the game, and having played 5 through a few times, the fight you're mentioning occurs almost move for move or hit for hit at the end of Resident Evil 5... just with different characters, and in a different location. Wesker also isn't some weird monster thing, which is really stupid.

In the game, it doesn't even smell of a Matrix rip off, which is sad because everything in this movie feels like someone tried to forcibly wed Matrix and a Zak Snyder movie.

I wish they would reboot this series...

If by "reboot" you mean drag it into the backyard, club it to death with a bowling pin and bury it in shallow grave, then yes, I totally agree. :D

LOL. Pretty similar!

Only add one more step: start up the franchise again! I really like RE, so I'd be down for a much more series true adaptation.
