Film Camp in LA or San Diego

Hey everyone - I've got some interesting news I suppose. I've never really done anything like this, so I thought I'd throw out some questions and see what people's opinions are.

I applied to teach at this technology camp, that's held at various universities across the US. My top choice was in LA at UCLA. I got the job, but its unsure of if I'll be at the university in San Diego or LA. I'll be teaching kids aged 10-15 the basics of cinematography and how to use FCE or FCP, depending on their skill level.

It'll be broken down into one week courses and I'll be there for approx. 8 weeks. My weekends and two evenings a week are off, so I was just wondering if maybe I could meet up with some of you DVXusers while I'm there. Keep in mind, this isn't until June and I realize its quite a bit away, but I just thought I'd throw out some feelers as I've never been there before (the only real parts of the States I've been to are Florida and New York).

Any advice in teaching the kids, or what to do while I'm down there? I plan on bringing my XH-A1 and filming as much as I can, but I don't want to get caught filming somewhere I shouldn't be (there aren't many problems when filming in Toronto, but not having been to California...I don't know how strict they are about that stuff)

All opinions and thoughts are much appreciated. Pretty pumped for this!

Wow, I think you might be talking about a camp I was thinking about attending this summer! Is it this place by any chance? http://usperformingarts.com/
Hey well I'm a DVXuser maybe you'll see me there this summer...I'm considering taking their Advanced Digital Filmmaking course. What are your thoughts on the program? I'm going to be a freshmen in college Fall '08

That just may be the camp - I likely won't be teaching you as you're a little older. I didn't get the chance to take a look at the link, so it may not be the one though. The ages vary I'm told, so it may be the advanced digital filmmaking course if they need me. If they need help in the other program, they sort of shift me around the two filmmaking courses.

Regardless, if that's not the camp I'm teaching, I'm sure I'll see you around campus at some point!

Anybody else have any suggestions? Not legal age to drink in the States, so thanks in advance in case anybody was suggesting a bar or grabbing a drink. I'm sure there's lots of interesting places that aren't typical tourist-y locations, right?

You can shoot stuff. As long as you don't have a crew with you, you should be just fine. Tell people you're a tourist if they hassle you and that should be enough to have them leave you alone.

And I'm sure some people will be up for a get together.

Just to be clear, I don't need a place to crash - I'll be staying at the university during the week and weekends, I'm still unsure of. I just wanted to meet a couple DVXusers from the area and maybe reccomend a few hot spots.

Thanks,

Kegan

Stroll down Hollywood blvd and see all the stars on the sidewalk. Go to Mann's Chinese Theater. It also depends on what your interests are. There's another thread where some guy is moving to LA soon. Take a look through that thread. There are a few places mentioned there as well.

Thanks a lot Tom. I'll definitely check out Mann's Chinese Theater. I enjoy the arts (of course) but I'm open to almost anything. If its a place thats a hidden treasure or a place thats widely known, it really doesn't matter. I'll try anything once.

I'll be checking that thread out now though,

Yeah actually, I am. Its been crossing my mind more and more. I like Canada and everything, but I get bored of things that move too slow. I need a more fast paced environment.

I guess this is sort of like a "scoping the scene out" trip so I can see if its a good fit for me. If it is, then I'll gladly move out there.

By the way, I enjoy going to plays - all sorts actually.
