Resident Evil: Afterlife

It's a good thing it's a bold, fresh, original work of high art not at all conceived with any eye toward profit or consumerism, 'coz if it weren't, you'd have to rail against it.

Just what is the going price for one writer soul, American anyway?

Anyway, the last Resident Evil was a snorefest without the slightest hint of suspense or surprise anywhere in it. And for a flick with Ali Larter in it, it still lost my attention. Can't imagine they'll suddenly be creative this time around.

Though I do like Jason O'Mara as an actor. He was a lot of the reason I liked Life on Mars.

You know it'll be bad when they plaster the fact that it was shot with James Cameron's 3d technology... as if that's the only way to attract an audience...

I'm liking recent 3D, but I hate how it's too much of a gimmic right now... *sigh*... but hey, sound was once a gimmic as well...

Great! Another installment in the most humorless, pointless, snooze-inducing sci-fi/horror franchise around. And it's written AND directed by Paul WS Anderson, or as I like to call him, "Uwe Boll With Deeper Pockets."

Fail.

Well, ithink the fact they announced It was shot with Cameron's technology is a good thing: it means the 3D experience was thought from the ground up, and wasn't merelly a post production upgrade. It should be one of the 3D experiences of the year. That's not obviously saying much about the competence of the film as a film, but as a rollercoaster ride kinda way

The first was okay. All the others were horrible. I will skipping this one.

and firing two guns at the same time is so lame now. Woo did it best and now it just looks stupid.

To me 3d is meaningless if there's no story. Sure Avatar was a fun ride, but if I want a ride I'll go on a roller coaster. Movies are for a narrative experience. People are forgetting that...

Maybe I'm over-reacting, but 3d is meant to enhance the experience of a film, not BE the experience.

I actually despise 3D. It has literally made every movie I've ever seen in 3D worse. And that's including Freddy's Dead. I don't like how I feel after watching 3D and it has never once managed to help me actually enjoy a film.

Putting on a helmet in a virtual environment seems pretty cool for things like gaming (and, I'd think, film), but confusing my eyes to think that there is layering when there is none is just a distraction IMO.

Good script, good acting, framing with intention -- everything else is just gimmicky and repulsive.

But as to Resident Evil's suckiness. I love it! RE understands that it's supposed to suck. It embraces its suckiness and says, "I know I suck, but I'm going to show up anyway and we're going to have some fun." It's like those later Nightmare on Elm Street movies with Alice (a mere coincidence, I THINK NOT!). They knew they sucked, but they didn't care. People wanted Freddy so they got Freddy and everyone had a good time being unpretentious.

When you name your main character Alice you're telling the world, "We suck and are completely unoriginal but we are going to have a blast just getting wasted and making some cool explosions and stuff. Hope you like girls in long boots and short skirts."

Give me Freddy vs Jason or AVP or Final Destination anyday over some pretentious toenail managing. The people who make these gutter-trash genre flicks are having a good time and, I think, it shows with the lightness you feel after seeing them.

Whenever the house is too quiet these are the movies I go to for background noise. And every once in a while I'll glance at the screen to watch someone do a slow motion spin kick or a double-gun sprint.

The remake of Dawn of the Dead is also superior for background noise. Love it!!

And this is the guy that railed against Avatar? At least we now understand his baseline of "good" movies.

Yes, well . . .

Whatever, like I said, go see Clash of the Titans (or for that matter Avatar) and tell me that big studios don't know how to purchase and produce any other kind of writing but hack, lame, idiotic, dumb struck, talentless, boring, trite, uninspired drivel.

I don't blame Walmart for being the anti-christ's toilet seat, I blame all the people who decide every day to eat from off of that toilet seat
, and the writers who tell them they should.

Yes, well . . .

Dude, you can't even put crap like Avatar and Clash in the same room as RE and Freddy. RE and Freddy are literally the OPPOSITE of Avatar. Avatar is the opitome of pretentious, bottom-feeding dung chunk soup.

BLADE on the other hand is like, "Hey, so, yeah, I'm Blade. What?"

That's odd, because I certainly CAN call RE and Freddy and Blade and AVP "hack, lame, idiotic, dumb struck, talentless, boring, trite, uninspired drivel." And if you're a loyal customer, you're absolutely perpetuating it, so it's the "anti-christ's toilet seat" you're happily slurping yourself.

And has anyone, anywhere, made any claims about Clash being a great piece of art? I don't think so. It's a summer popcorn flick, and it was never supposed to be anything else. Why shouldn't it get the same pass as RE or Freddy?

Clash is pretentious. Look at the supporting cast. You're not going to see any of the movies I've mentioned dealing with pretentious casting. Friggin Voldermort didn't even want to be in Clash, it was a paycheck.

Avatar is, IMO, one of the worst films ever put to screen because it was A) pretentious, but more importantly it B) proclaimed itself to be a "movie with message" and Cameron insisted on talk show after talk show that that message was pro environmental when, in fact, the entire movie was about people (be them blue or white) claiming ownership over the earth. Avatar is the worst kind of soiled, disgusting thing.

If RE3 had proclaimed itself as a pro environmental movie and that we should all be awed and humbled by its message it would have ended up in the same bin, but RE would never do that -- RE doesn't need to lie, trick and manipulate to get viewers.

Can't wait for part 4!

Man, I don't think I've even seen Resident Evil 2 or 3, and I barely remember the first one, which was not too bad as far as I remember. Nothing will ever come close to the first two Resident Evil games. Both of those nearly made me **** myself back in the PS One days.

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if RE 4 is miles better than Transformers 1 & 2, GI Joe, and either AvP film.

What I want to know is, when are we going to get a Left 4 Dead movie?

I still can't understand why people hate the AVP movies so much. My only thinkng is that they hate them because they are so far beneath the material from which they're derived. But I would never compare AVP to Alien; they're not even in the same genre so far as I'm concerned. Compared to other movies I've mentioned here (the Blade franchise, Final Destinations, Nightmares, Friday the 13ths) I think they hold up fine.

I don't know why Avatar ever even made it into this conversation. That would be like bringing an exaustingly bad (see: pretentious) movie like A.I. into a conversation about Blade Runner (or, in the AVP/RE realm, the Terminator franchise).

I'm sure Left for Dead will have its day. I just hope they don't ruin it the way they did Max Payne. If it lands somewhere between Silent Hill and the Dead franchise, though, it should be alright.

And while those original two games were awesome (I actually read all the novelizations and enjoyed those too), I actually liked the cleaner graphics of the remake of number one and Resident Evil: Zero.

And speaking of Zero, supposedly the people who did the all CGI straight to DVD flick Resident Evil: Degeneration have been talking about their next movie drawing from the characters in Zero (namely Rebecca). Now that would be too sweet.

The first Resident Evil was great. The second was...not so great. The third was good enough.

This one looks terrible. Mostly because of the 3D, which is quite clearly a gimmick here, and nothing more. I counted no fewer than 12 shots where things unnecessarily fly toward the camera IN THE TRAILER. I can't imagine how bad the whole film will be if that's how lame the direction is in the trailer...

I have no problem with 3D, but not when it is used in combination with an excuse to simply randomly hurl objects at the viewer. And that's exactly what we have here. Not only is it lame in 3D, but it's even more lame in regular 2D, as it makes even less sense and is more jarring there.
