Reservation holders got a letter

I guess I can discuss this since I don't believe it's confidential. Got a letter from TEAM RED sent to those lucky few of us who have reservations.

The short of it is they are inviteing us to see a special screening of the 4k footage at IBC and we can now put down deposits on the 300mm lens.

It's just a guess on my part, but I am not expecting RED will see a lot of deposits for that lens. It's pretty damn long.. I tend to wonder (This is guessing folks, take with 5 lbs of salt) if the reason for offering the deposits is to get a feel for the demand of this lens and to see if they are better off just holding off on this thing and going for a more general purpose lens that we can all use a little more.

I say this cause Jim said one of the purposes of the deposits for RED was to guage interest and come to some ideas on creation and how many they would need.

I'm kind of sad that the 4k showing is in a place so far away.. But I guess that's just the timing of things.

There's a great discussion of 2k vs. 1080P on DVinfo.net... I learned a lot, you should check it out

There are so many of these companies shooting film or perhaps HD now at sporting events, NFL films and NASCAR races for example. RED would be a great fit for this type of film making and that lens would probably be great. But I'm no expert on the matter. Nature film making? Oooh, how about a macro lens... ants at 4K, nice.

You have a strong point.. It's arrogant of me to think that simply because I would like a nice wide angle zoom, most others would too.

Most everyone is waiting to hear the details of the zoom... but don't count the 300mm out. My best guess is action sports (my use), nature, etc. There are lots of shooters that love long lenses. BTW, we received "many" reservations the 1st day.

I'll be in line for the 300 and most of everything else connected with Red One. ie. Red Cage, REd DRive, Red Raid, Red RAM, Red Viewfinder, Red Zoom....

Hey Jim, how about some special edition Oakley's for celebrating the actual launch of Red One.

It appears from the letter than unless you are going to IBC or are near a couple of key citys in the U.S. for special screenings later in the fall, none of the rest of us will see any Red footage at all.

I was hoping that there would at least be something on the Red.com site.

Jim has said that they are planning to have footage online. If you want to see a 4K digital projection, however, you'll probably have to hit up one of the cities.

They should have mentioned the online stuff in the letter. Its worded as though if you don't attend a screening, your SOL.

Thanks Haakon!

Jim,

The sensor progress is very exciting. I'm eager to see the IBC footage - I know your team won't let the community down!

I'm curious about a 300mm prime being introduced prior to a variable prime, or perhaps a series of more common focal length primes (e.g., 35mm; 55 / 58mm).

The 300 has a somewhat limited use - even in natural photography (something I have some experience in ;)). Forget the 300mm on the track as was suggested above - NASCAR, like all sports television, is shot almost entirely with zooms.

I'm certain that the decision [to develop primes] was driven by to-market-cost against engineering and manufacturing concerns? If so, why not introduce a 55mm first? Ostensibly, every operator will have an immediate and pressing need for this length over the limited 300mm?

If a cost-effective (read: less than $250) Nikon or Canon mount is available as a "bolt-on" user-fitted accessory, then this might well become a moot point - everyone can simply throw DOF converter caliber optics on the RED until practical RED options are introduced.

Dunno, but you're the man, and I defer to your team's collective experience.

Jim has mentioned that they have plans to make many different lenses and the 300mm was simply the one that was ready first. There wasn't an intentional push to get this one to market before the others.
