AC90: Replacement Microphone Mount

Someone, somewhere in one of the AC90 threads mentioned the screw on shotgun mic mount was a PITA and made the camera a bit to tall for some cases. HE was looking for a screw in replacement that was lower or preferably a cold shoe mount.

Does any one know of a screw in cold shoe adaptor for the AC90 that would replace the mic mount?

Hi Pete

I have an NGT2 so thanks for the link.

however the original thought was a low profile screw in cold shoe mount that would replace the high profile screw in mic mount.
The mic mount adds about an inch and a half to the hight of the camera and just gets in the way.

This would mean the camera would fit the bags with the second cold shoe mount fitted. Then a pair of radio mics or a radio and a shotgun could be fitted quickly without a screwdriver. Besides sod's law says that you will loose a screw [in the rain and dark] one day when trying to fit the mic mount.

Hopefully Panasonic or a 3rd party might produce one if there is enough of a demand?

Hmmm. For that at present you'd need to add a small ball and socket head to the existing cold shoe to get enough height, then put a t-bar on that and have either cold shoes or 1/4"x20 screws on either end for the mic and radio. It would detach quickly for bagging up but it would also be prone to rotation when in use.

Quite so!

However as others clearly have the same problem with the hight of the current screw in mic mount it seems a low profile screw in cold shoe would be very useful.

It might be a sensible thing for Panasonic to add in as standard. Though I expect it will be down to a third party. (that or we all use camera bags that are much larger :-(

i agree with this. it actually makes me wonder sometimes if newly developed camera's are actually used/tested in real life situations before put on the market. a second shoe mount on that spot where the screw holes are would be much more handy, or make the mic holder clip-on or something. i solved the problem by using the 'rode' mic holder on the shoe. if i have to use on-cam light (that i slide into the shoe) i can attach that mic holder to the light itself. the light has hotshoe-sized holes on the side that are meant to clip on another light, but a mic holder fits in just as well. it does make the cam a bit x-mas tree ish though.

ps. another example of the 'has this been tested?' is the lcd / viewfinder that cannot be switched on at the same time. i feel like a fool flipping in and out the lcd continuously when i need to check something quickly in the viewfinder. i really do hope this can be solved in a firmware update. energy saving (if this is the reason) is no issue on this cam anyway, it runs for hours and hours on one battery..
