Render issue (frustration ensues ... now)

This is after working for hours and hours on a project. I've done both of the requested options above. Also, this happens on frame 2.

Currently working on a 2.8GHz i5, 4GB RAM, running CS4.

Looks as though you have a still image in there that's too big to cope.
If that's correct - is it necessary to have the picture so big?
If you can make your film with a smaller still image then check the scale properties of the image and reduce the original to a more efficient size.
If you require the image to be so big you can split the picture up into more manageable chunks and comp them together in AE by Parenting layers together.

Hope this helps

I experienced something similar whilst making a kinetic typography piece. T'was indeed the size of my background jpeg.

Also, multiprocessing with a quad core and 4gb of ram might be an issue. What are your allocations?

AE only allows me to use 1.79 for rendering. Weird. I figured it would let me use the 3 (limit). So even with everything else off, and "purge ever 5 frames" it was still giving me that error. I'll cut that piece up tonight. Any idea what a normal size would be? I don't want to make a ton more than necessary. I'll probably start with 1000x1000 or so and see how that goes.

Time to head to crucial.com, I guess.

I've sort of used the rule of thumb that for a still, it should be 2x to 4x the resolution of the eventual video. This would allow for smooth pans over the image, as well as some amount of 'enlargement'. If something needs to be really 'zoomed in', then perhaps a series of images, at different zoom factors, made in PS or the like and then cut together to get the desired 'zoom in' effect.

Hawk, as mentioned look through your timeline and note how you have scaled the image. If you're using it at 100% Scale is it static or are you panning around?

If it's static then you need to edit the pic in Photoshop, by scaling it down to the same vale as you it scaled down in AE and crop the image to match your usage.

If it is panning around you may need to either a) note the extremities of the pan and crop the image accordingly or b) cut the image up into more manageable chunks and tile them together in AE, you can then Parent them all to a Null object and use the Null to control the Position value.

Alternatively if you find tha you have scaled down the image to fit your Composition, then locate the image and edit in Photoshop or whatever and scale down the image to it's largest Scale value in AE. So if the image zips between 10-30% in your timeline scale down the image to 30%.

RAM is another issue as a rule of thumb you're supposed to assign 2GB Ram per core on your machine, as reference I have an 8 core Mac and have 20GB installed, 16 for AE and 4 for OSX and other apps.Hope this helps resolve any problem

Thanks guys. Yeah, I definitely need more RAM. My iMac will only hold 8GB I believe, so I'll try to get that. The image was just a 3000x8000 floor with a grid on it. So I went back in and created a bunch of 5x3000 lines and recreated the grid line by line. It's rendering now. Only 19hours and 37 minutes remain. It's been rendering for 3 hours and 5 minutes.

Maybe you should cancel the render and use
Effect / Generate / Grid
You can apply this to a layer and make it 3D, then you can use a Rotate value to get vanishing points etc. if that's the look you're going for?

The grid was on the 3000x8000 layer. So By putting it on a bunch of small layers (to break it up), I was having overlapping (it was at 50% opacity) which looked bad. Also, it was feathered out, so it was looking more like a snowman shape with a grid on it.

Sorry Hawk, but I'm not sure I follow your last entry?

Do you still require advice/help?

No, I think I'm good. I was just saying that the original file that was giving me the error was the 3000x8000 solid layer with the grid already on it. THAT was shutting AE down. So instead I just built the grid piece by piece. It's got a long render, but it's chugging along. Also, I forgot to turn off one of the 3000x8000 layers (there are 4), and it stopped the render last night around midnight. Well, crud.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Ouch - that's some insane render time.

On my MacPro, Quad, 14GB of RAM - I find that complex AE projects can start to slow, and daring to jump to another app (even mail or a browser) can be teeth-grinding. Seems like AE slowly seeps into all sorts of system crevasses. If I have a few hours of complex AE ahead, I quit everything, sometimes even restart to sort of give me a clean slate.

I have a lot of insane days, where I have something lit and rendering in a 3D modeling program, while pasting AI files into PS and importing into FCP, with ProTools open as well... and I never get a crash, no matter how hard I push things. So I do try to restart every week or so.

Anyone using the 5.5 update? Supposedly the memory architecture has been tweaked. Haven't gotten around to it, I can't get past the "I'm paying $350 for a warp-stabilize plugin???"

Always a good practice to get into. That and purging.

I d/l the trial and actually found it to run slower, not sure why, but regardless, I went back to CS5.0

I'm rendering an image sequence NOW. Attempts 1-8 all bailed about a minute in (of 1:30). This one is an image sequence (png) ... not kidding: "Est. Remain: 47 Hr, 12 Min"

That was last night. When I get home, it should be closing in on the 24 Hr period. I just hope I didn't misspell something.

I really want to see the final product. 47hrs!!!!!wow. Hope it works!

What in God's name are you putting together? Is this in 4K or something? :) Just curious, what is the resolution and how many layers in the project? Is there a ton of motion blur or something?
