FS7: RED Scarlet-W

I'd certainly be interested in testing a 2010 Alexa against a 2011 Epic against a 2015 Weapon against a 2015 Alexa to see what the current state of how far everyone has come is.

I switched my Raven order to the new Scarlet-W. Seems like a great cinema camera. I was contemplating getting a Mag Weapon, but the price was pretty high so the Scarlet mean more money in my pocket. The Mag Weapon has 6K which I don't need and higher frame rates which I seem to be shooting less and less with (and it's $20,000 more), so the Scarlet-W is a good fit.

Still keeping my FS7 as well.

The low-ish Scarlet price point was a huge surprise.

In case people missed it.

Prices and details released next week. Shipping feb/March.

I think I'm all over the OMOD XLR

Could you summarize in few words what it exactly do? There's a lot of text on their site but not a quick summary. Is that a module for proper audio in camera or it does something extra too?

All their modules have the basic i/o package built in, so sdi, HDMI, sync and I think usb. They all fit v mount or gold mount adopters on the back for power too.

The Brain is just that. Part of a modular system that needs the other bits to function. Raven has lens mount and ssd reader built in. Those are changeable on the other cameras.

It only makes sense to switch to scarlet-w if you ask me. I would have done the same.

Yep I think the Scarlet is a better bet than a magnesium Weapon, and you can always rent a carbon one if you need it.

Yeah, I think a Scarlet-W + FS7 is a pretty insane combo. Got all the bases covered from Cinema to doc, all for not that much money (relatively speaking). You figure when the F5 came out, it was around $25K for a decent kit. For close to that price you can now have a Scarlet-W and an FS7. Truly insane and a great time to be a filmmaker.

The reason I am holding onto my FS7 for now is that it has a client base.

In the past what I used to find was that people who could afford Red would shoot the top one and people who couldn't would shoot DSLR. Times have changed a bit, but I have a lot of clients more than happy to pay my rate with FS7 attached. When I am shooting cars up a mountain it is exactly the right amount of robust and durable with long battery and record times. As of right this second all of those are unknowns about DSMC2 for me, and might not be as easy a sell to my clients who are mostly of the 'good enough is good enough' variety and who naturally favour getting it done in time over getting it perfect.

Which is why Raven is a possible gateway to that point without me putting all my eggs in that basket.

I guess for me, the true Super 35mm and swappable mount alone is worth the extra $4000. The extra resolution in full frame, slightly better frame rates and swappable OLPF are a bonus as well.

Strangely enough, I was about to do a job for Snapchat (which got canned). But they shoot in vertical format like an iPhone upright so their specs are 1080 (h) x 1920 (v). 5K @ 2700 (v) pixels would have been nice for that to allow some re-cropping which 4K would have not allowed much re-cropping.

I'm definitely not a resolution guy, but new, strange formats are emerging so I guess I'll take the extra 1K of resolution.

Oh I think it is an absolute bargain and I do see myself having one maybe even later in 2015. I just made a vow to myself to curb spending on things I cannot get a guaranteed return on in future and I'll need to build the audience.

Lots of advertising stuff being done in portrait now. It's the end of times :(

Um I just got an email from a company saying they are taking preorders for RED Raven and Scarlet-W cameras. Did I miss RED starting to use vendors for camera sales? Is this a new thing or did I just not know about it? So is this the end of RED making products that will always require year long preorder waits and many months of backorders? I'm all for it since it means price competition might even come into play and we might get slightly lower street prices perhaps? Or maybe they only use a very very small selection of vendors?

Samy DV and Abel Cine are the only authorized resellers that I know.

When did RED start having authorized resellers? Maybe I just missed it since I haven't thought about buying anything RED since I pre-ordered the Scarlet I used to own? That was such a painful process as was waiting for the upgrade that never came.

Ben, that post really convinced me how much work they put in those camera and that Scarlet-W is truly a bargain. Like Gene said: FS7+Scarlet-W (+A7sII for stealth and super low light shooting) will make a TERRIFIC combo.
