FS7: RED Scarlet-W

There's a part of me thinking if I beefed up an A7s II setup with the XLR module etc, I could probably get away with having that plus Scarlet and not need the FS7....

Was thinking about similar but they're just to many compromises to let it go. 10bit, LUTs and no recording limits.

I'll have the scarlet for those jobs, and the fully kitted out A7 for fast turnaround smaller things.

Will dwell on this...

I've been thinking too, and if you have two cameras like FS7 and RED W I don't see the deciding factors on which one comes out to play over the other.

Obviously if you need RAW you shoot RED W but for everything else, the RED W also shoots 2K ProRes which is far better a codec when it comes to delivery of footage and not having to probe someone about the editors platform.

Having said that if I was staying with more a Sony camp then I would be inclined to ditch the FS7 in exchange for F5 with optional R5 and then get the A7sii for compact or b-cam shoots.

The later is sort of where I am with my thoughts for this week anyway. I looked at a F5/FS7 for my b-cam on two cam shoots but I'd likely benefit more from the A7Sii as a b-cam and not have to worry too much about it paying for itself.

Basically any time image quality is the deciding factor go with the Red.

Any time you have a controlled environment and the luxury of time go with the Red.

For anything where you need to be fast/light and not swap out NDs etc and have no idea what is going to happen next, the FS7.

For anything at 10,000 iso the A7 :)

You don't have to think of redcode simply as being raw either. My PC plays it back natively in Premiere better than FS7 XVAC-I files.

Um what? At what debayer quality? That can't possibly be the case when comparing full quality full resolution playback, can it?

The RAW on the FS7 and lower may be flawed, but on F5/F55 it is what you would expect. Ok there' still the whole "color science" thing and what's easier / better to get "great" images out of… but I still haven't decided definitely. At times XAVC 10-bit has blown me away, and if I was smart I would test SR Codec more which would probably blow me more away.

But really for the money at this stage in the game (whereas I was making decisions 3 years ago when F55 was first announced) with all the camera options available to me the RED W is no brainer. Especially if it can shoot 2K prores with full sensor FOV. (can it?)

I even considered a BMPCC but it's only HD and I have a few clients that want to shoot 4K with two cam's so for my b-cam if I stick with the F55 i'm torn between BMPCC / A7Sii / FS7 (at which point I can buy a F5 for almost same price as FS7).

No need for the xlr module.. For on camera audio invest in a couple of nice powered mics(pictured below is a sanheisser me64/K6 combo) & custom made XLR to 1/8 stereo cables. Great workaround that keeps it small with solid on-cam audio. Actually have another mount in a bag somewhere that I modified so the actual shockmount sits almost flush with the hot shoe for an even more compact setup(while losing the vertical adjust).

Use this setup with my A7rii, some ND and a nice chest stabilizer, extremely versatile.

4k full res is very very cuda accelerated and butter smooth for me.

EDIT: Multiple layers of with effects it can slow but half res is perfect. To be honest it is my hard drives more than anything that slow it down.

EDIT EDIT: My system is i7 5820k, 32Gb ram and Geforce 980GTX.

Re the A7 audio solution.

Sadly that's no good to me at all for interviews or double-headers which I often do.

Have the Sony MI shoe wireless lav which is nice but often have to run a second one as well through the XLR.

I don't really have to worry too much about keeping it small if that makes sense? Even if it was FS7 sized that would still be small for me :)

Kill FS7, I think the ideal combo would be FS5 (add a A7sII if budget allow) and RED Scarlet ( D or W)

I had an FS7 that I loved and used a ton but the kind of project that was used I always recorded XAVC-L to save storage (8bits is more than enough for fast Color Correction and add a few Luts) when I need More Quality (RAW) or have budget for intense Color Correction I always used RED.

I wouldn't touch an FS5 with a bargepole. Used it the other day. Sure it's tiny but I hate it.

If the FS7 has 'quirks' I don't know where to begin describing the things that are a bit crap on the FS5. It definitely has a place but not on the sort of work I do.

I like the URSA Mini 4.6k for half the price of the Scarlet W or less, global shutter, HFR, Prores, but I don't need either one.

haha, not sure if you missed the recent conversation on this and the FS7 vs Raven thread.

We all have different requirements and markets. But personally so far from what I've seen I would take an A71 over a 4.6k Ursa Mini.

What's wrong with URSA Mini 4.6 other than being vaporware? The video I saw from it, (Salt Lake, City Utah) looked very nice, wide dynamic range, nice colors. The A7SII can be a mess of rolling shutter and 8 bit, it seems like it to me. Listen to us complain about 4k Lol..I'm going to look for that discussion on the UM 4.6.

Yeah I've had that conversation several times now so not going to repeat myself but a lot of people have talked it up and said it had better IQ than the FS7 and nobody has posted a single clip that supported that. Everything I've seen of it so far looks awful.

You didn't like this footage?
I downloaded the 1080p file from Vimeo.
