Red Scarlet vs F3

..and that's exactly why I bought one. One day Im shooting XDCAM EX or 422 ProRes for a doc in some third world country and the next, s-log(rented) 444 for a feature or commercial. If I was only shooting one specific type of work I might have made a different decision, maybe.
Spot on - that is exactly what the F3 is about.

Cannot wait for your article, Timur! I decided to go Red vs the F3 (albeit a different Red camera, but with the same sensor), even though I think from what I've seen the F3 with Slog is incredible bang for the buck for medium to even high end productions (broadcast). Would love to see what Spike Lee brings to the table with it.

I went Red for the form factor (yes, ridiculous recording times with the redvolts, but for crane, steadicam or slider shots having the possibility to go small form factor and more lightweight is a big plus for me), 4k (5K in my case), and RAW. I really want to see however if the Scarlet is more sensitive than, say, an HVX200. I squeezed about everything i could out of that camera and know where it can go in low light. If the Scarlet is more sensitive, it should be adequate for most night shooting scenarios?

Well.... serial # counts because early adopters get perks. Look at the epic x stage program.

Ah. No wonder. No thanks..will never do business with that company.

I actually like the fact that Red rewards the people that helped them from the beginning of their products. It feels a lot better than when I bought my FS100 as an early adopter only to see six months later, well, if I waited, now I can get a free FMU with the purchase of an FS100. Or when I bought an AF100, if I waited, I could have had a free lens with a purchase. I mean, this is nothing new, this happens with a lot of companies. People really like their RED cameras and I think that's pretty cool. People name their computers as well, for one thing, it makes it easy to keep track of if you have multiple cameras and just makes it a little fun and creative. It amazes me how judgmental people get just because people might actually have fun in their work and get creative.

I just don't get emotional over a piece of gear or a company.

I guess it all depends on what constitutes emotional. I get excited about new technology that opens up freedoms not before had. I think a lot of people do. This is in all aspects of what I do. I remember when I got a new guitar and the sound was just INCREDIBLE compared to the one I had before. It brought me new excitement to playing music because it was better than what I had before. I mean, shooting a camera gets me excited, and the technology is just an extension of that.

But, people are different. I look at the Red camera in terms of what it does for me and how I shoot, same as the F3. I don't own an F3 because I don't like the form factor or the internal codec, not because of price. It just doesn't fit my needs. But, I am here reading about the F3 and Scarlet because I do like what people are doing with them, and I find the viewpoints and differences in how people feel about them interesting. I especially value Timur's feelings on both, and information he shares about his usage of both of them.

Why would you care that people are excited? Why would you care if you didn't get perks based on serial number? It comes down to this, does the RED camera (Scarlet) do what you need right now for the price you want to spend? I mean, saying you are never going to buy from that company based on what you said certainly seems like an emotional response to you not liking their business practices, or the people that are excited about the RED camera in ways you wouldn't be.

But I also think, just because people name their equipment doesn't mean it is emotional. I name my hard drives for fun, but not because I think one of my hard drives is superior to the other. As long as they remain dependable, I could care less who makes them. In fact, I find people name a lot of their things based on something else they find exciting.

For instance, I love the movie Aliens, and I've been meaning to rename my hard drives to names of people in the movie. Why? It's something else I like and it makes some boring a little more fun, cause hard drives really don't excite me that much. I'm certainly going to call any drive I have problems with Burke. :)

What I want to know is just how much worse is the Scarlet in low light when using noise reduction in post since it's not done in camera like the F3. Timur, have you done any tests with that? I just think F3 to Scarlet tests really need to look at post processing of the image since with the REDRAW workflow, that's really where those decisions are pushed.

My Epic is named "Cecil," named by my mom after Cecil B. DeMille.

And while the images Cecil gives me are beyond anything my F3 ever did, I do not feel the need to attempt any kind of mating ritual with my camera.

That's between your lenses and the camera.... :)

I'm debating a Scarlet vs F3 right now. Hard choice between a used F3 or battle-tested Scarlet.

I have always loved the F3's milky smoothness and S-log even in 4:2:2 really gives it a beautiful tonality, which I unfortunately have never seen in any Scarlet footage.

The 4k is great, and the Dragon sensor is the real bate for me.. as well as the marketing/name and the ergonomics of the body.

I also have EF lenses, and am wondering how much of an inconvenience the MTF mount would be, since the control module on it seems massive.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I love the Red One MX footage I've seen as well as the epic footage, but anything I see come out of Scarlet seems to be grainy, blotchy and just poorly exposed.. I can't think of a single thing I've seen to say "wow" ...

With the F3 on the other hand, I definitely have said wow on numerous occasions, skin tones etc.

I'm mainly looking to do Features, Shorts, and Documentaries (as well as some commercial, brand films etc)

Wait 72 hours.

Tommorow Sony will announce info on "The New F." Official teasers have been "4K" "High Frame Rate" "50Mbps."

And on November 1st, RED will be announcing lower pricing on EPIC, and quite possibly Scarlet. It's reasonable to assume that RED One units will experience a price shift too - not to mention a bunch of used gear flooding the forums and eBay in the coming months.

The landscape is going to change overnight. Any reasonable assessments can probably wait a couple days.

Yes, thanks for the advice. Essentially it's what I'm anxiously anticipating.

I have a BMC on pre-order as well as a B-Cam.
