Red Scarlet Delayed Again... Price increase up $1000

Black and Decker don't sell drills, they sell you a hole in your wall wherever you want, whenever you want.

Well said - I tell my B2B marketing clients that all the time - "you don't sell a product, you sell profitability"

I guess that mindset makes me laugh at a lot of threads 'round here (look at the silly & hilarious "will the Af100 kill the DSLR?" thread for examples. Lots & lots & lots of examples.)

Right now, I want what I get from Canon already... I just want a better codec, better monitoring, no moire, cleaner edges for keying, and useable audio. I'd like better remote options as well. It'll come - I don't know if it'll be a next gen DSLR (sure wasn't the D7000), a Panny or a Red. For now, I'm really curious to see the first real-world tests of the new Panny.

More red cars have accidents than any other color - maybe they´re cursed with the ¨never satisfied bug¨, like us all ! But , if you´re making something, eventually you have to say enough already ! 6K is still ok if they deliver a real product and not a betatesting program. Truthfully, I´m uncertain whether anyone but the Japanese have the discipline to bring a complicated technology like this to a mass market without big brothers help.

Indeed. I liked what I got from Nikon first too, I don't mind a decent mjpeg, except it wasn't that decent. But I shot with it.

D7000 doesn't cut the wishlist for me, but yeah if it's there I'll pick it up for the day. Like the glass. I highly doubt that RED can compromise enough quality to deliver at that low a price point. I don't even think anyone would want them to. It's starting to feel like it would defeat the purpose.

Back when the other options weren't there, ok, I could see the 'obligation' to 3k for 3k. But they are here, and they're just other options.

Cheers :)

Thinking about this in relation to Original Topic... the whole package seems expensive, but just the added feature at 1000$...

HDR during video for 1000$, still in mind as a feature, is a steal. Having the option of unlocking that feature for 1000$ would be nice. Maybe a module that way they make them to order. I have no idea how it's done, I say module figuratively of course.

But HDR for a few dollars more, and a thousand in the RAW league is a few dollars... damn. That's pretty sick.

I have always been priced out, RED never priced an available camera body for under 17,500 dollars since it started. :)

You guys are spoiled by cheap DSLRs.

What was the original DVX when it came out? What the HVX200 or Sony EX1/EX3?

I never heard " oh, I´m priced out, I gonna skipp that" - I heard "someone needs a kidney?".
And after the first few gigs or rentals I heard " That little gem payed for it self".

What´s up? Even 20.000 would be a steal for the Scarlet.
Same goes for the Drama, that is in the 10.000 Euro league - a bargain compared to what it can do.

I don't think Scarlet will ever be released
I used to post on the reduser forum how the Scarlet is just vaporware and will never see the light of the day until I was banned.

A fully rigged & ready to shoot Scarlet with input & output specs to math the cameras listed & proper batteries that last longer than the tiny side handle one & (I'm guessing) SSD drive to be able to utilize HDRx you're looking at what? $10,000 or more? (I haven't done the math, just guess work). The DVX, HVX & EX1 weren't that much. EX3 maybe but I know far fewer people with those than I do the others you listed. Yes, there is a price break where it gets too expensive to afford a camera system & Scarlet might be over that for a lot of us.

It comes down to this:
If I want a Scarlet bad enough I'll either take out a loan (yuck) or work harder to get more $$ to either pay for one or get the kind of jobs that will allow me to pay for one. Simple as that. I'm not owed a Scarlet, no is Red required by law to keep it's price where I can afford it. This might mean I go in another direction other than the one I've been hoping to go in for over 2 years now. Oh well, life goes on.

Vaporware it most certainly is not. It's a real camera not just some notes on the back of a napkin. That being said, released it most certainly is not either.

Duke Nukem Forever apparently was real too...
But where is Duke Nukem?
Show me Duke Nukem!
I want to see the Duke Nukem!

At about $10K for a workable rig, it is not question if the Scarlet is a good value, it probably is, but if it has priced itself out of reach for most of the projected audience attracted by the 3K for $3K promise of the original Scarlet. This is a three fold increase in price. Again, Scarlet is probably a good value, but that ignores the many people who held off on other purchases because of promises that were never met. RED has left the market of low end people who waited for two years, and is delivering good value to a different market. Are the people who saved their money and waited wrong to feel some degree of being misled? Please understand their emotions and do not belittle them because they have been priced out of the RED market. And please stop belittling them because they do not have as much money as do successful working pros.

To Postmaster: I agree with you, compared to the prices of any accessible camera system out there capable of the same league in quality, the RED one itself is very much a steal. And it makes me happy to know that it's so because of the way they set up their business. Straight from the factory.

I'm not angry, I admit there was a time I was... but all my points previously were made just to point out that even though it's out of my league, it is fascinating to keep up to date with.

I very simply don't have 17,500 dollars. That is all. Other than that I think you're dead on.

On the other end, they are a company, and what a company announces is taken as a promise by a consumer. 3k for 3k was an announcement. I don't think anyone is 'spoiled'.

The Scarlet should go somewhere in the annals of USA something corporate history. No wonder Japanese companies took over the camera business.

Why is RED so late releasing EPIC and Scarlet?

1. We had no idea what we were doing.

2. This is as difficult a trick as anyone could possibly pull off. 5K/120fps on a postage stamp has never been done before by anyone, let alone by a new company that has no idea what they were doing and no library of information.

3. Engineers are optimistic. They think they can do stuff faster than is reasonable. And they tell us dates that they can't make.

4. Stuff changes. We have added capabilities along the way the complicated the process. This is a disruption to the program and adds time to process.

5. Nothing works like it is supposed to. The amount of boards and lines of code needed for this project are not comprehensible. Everything needs to be done several times to get it right.

No one is as frustrated as me over the delays. But it is what it is. The process just simply takes more time than anyone would expect.

There are several million lines of code in an EPIC and Scarlet. No excuses... just fact. Everyone is working 24/7 with catnaps. We love the program and the opportunities. But we are guessing at when we will finish.

No company loves what they are doing more than RED. No company works harder. But forgive us if we don't meet deadlines. This is really hard stuff.

I'm not a Red owner. I'm not sure if I ever will be. But I have deep respect for what they are doing to change the landscape in Cinematography. I HATE how long they've taken, but....for what they are innovating, I give them MAD RESPECT. HDRx for 1000 is FREAKING NUTS. I NEVER thought they'd add it to Scarlett...and CERTAINLY NOT FOR 1000usd??!! I'm not counting on seeing Scarlet during 2011 PERIOD. I'll get a little upset if they don't launch by 2013. But I will say this....until one of the Big Boys (Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, JVC, etc, etc) DO RAW VIDEO....until then....everyone can continue to "bow down" to Red Camera Company.....until someone else does it....

Congrats to us all to live in a time where merely the "fear" of future product launches inspires competing companies to "try harder". I'm sure Panasonic, Sony etc...aren't shaking in the boots, but....if a Scarlet DOES launch at under 8Kusd. It will defineatly leave a mark. I'm with Kholi on this matter....I don't think ANYTHING is a "killer" of a proven market/segment, but....RAW, HDRx, 4:4:4 color space, on 3K res....WOWSER....that's mindblowing........................even in 2013. :)

With all due respect Jim, but at some point the idea 3K for 3K evolved into something else. Instead of releasing a basic 2/3" fixed lens camera you guys decided to add more and more features (and more circuits), making it into something else.
Going to a major trade show at the end of 2010 with a banner for camera release in 2009 was a joke- if you want to play with big boys, you have to act like big boys (same goes for the web page). You are a media company with outdated website- think how does it make you look. And if I have to spend 10-12K on the setup I'd rather go with HPX500.
