Red Scarlet Announcement Info

We'll see in just a couple days. If there's a below 10k ready to shoot (sans lens), interchangeable package then I'll be really interested, whether it's 2/3 or s35 , 3k or 4k. I just want "Raw". If not, oh well...I'll just keep renting for a few more years while owning sub 1k cams.

What price are you betting on, Barry? I can't really afford more than 6-7k, do you think this is realistic for a 4K 2/3 Scarlet?
No, probably not, because the last announcement said "the price has gone up." And the price on the Epic went up $7,000. The low-end Epic is $35,000 now, so I can't see Scarlet coming in at $6k. I would expect it to be priced on par with Canon's rumored $12k price point. Probably $9995 for a complete shooting package with all the required accessories. However, they've said stuff like "it's our most important announcement in history" so I expect that they will have some features that nobody is anticipating.

Barry, do you think a 2/3 Scarlet for wides and mediums coupled with a gh2 for shallow DOF CUs would be a good combination? Or would the 4k just overpower the gh2?
No possible way to know. But if I was looking at that scenario, I'd just get one AF100 and be done with it. Meaning, if you're looking for things to mix together, why spend twice as much to get two different camera systems with two different workflows, two different "looks", two different battery systems and image settings and lens mounts, trying to figure out how to make each of them shine... why work that hard? Save some dough, get something that works, only invest in one system, and spend your time actually working instead of "workarounds"... that's my take anyway. I'm sure others will have other opinions.

Well, this time is different. Jarred said that whatever they announce will be available immediately.

You'll be able to order immediately, but I don't think it will be shipping immediately. Last I read over there was it would ship "before the end of the year." I wouldn't be surprised if they use up all of that margin until Dec 31. Remember Scarlet was suppose to be built by Foxconn, then they had to go looking somewhere else. I don't know if they even ever did that, or they plan to build them here in LA. If so, their quantities will be limited. Maybe being built in the USA if why there's a price increase.

But they're the only ones who do it. Sure, a host of variables play roles in determining price, and these can change -- with a resultant change in price. But when you make a point of mentioning a price, people have every right to hold you to it until you can explain the change. You can't just quote a price and down the road excoriate would-be customers as being unrealistic if they haven't been privy to all the forces that have raised the cost of manufacture. If you create an expectation, you have to assume responsibility for it if it comes back to bite you on the ass.

It's also a little cynical to hype an upcoming announcement as if it were the second coming and then shortly before tell everyone that the only bad news will be a price increase -- but then imply the rest would be good news if one would forget all the hype of the previous three years.

Couldn't agree more. The price point is THE REASON for all the hype the past 3 years. That was the magic, err, propaganda, of the Scarlet. An AFFORDABLE (read for the masses) camera that could make extremely high quality images. Take either of those two elements out of that formula and you get a 7d or an Alexa/Epic.

I've never seen a company that has done so little to people be so hated by people.... Why? who has the time to waste hating something so adamantly... move on, then again you can do what you like I just don't get it. I find many a company to behave in a horrible way, who has a checkered past, who mistreats their customer, but yet when their product is the right choice I will buy it.

Meh it's gone way to far now, I think I'll leave it alone seeing as I'll just get seen as a red fanboy when all I'm trying to do is to get people to act rationally, then again who said I have the right or know how. Maybe all the posts that bother me are from young people either in age or mind who have not yet realized what they are saying, I don't know, All I do know is I'm done with it.

I'm buying and using what ever camera best suits my needs, I don't care if it came from Germany the US or Japan, I don't care who built it, I don't care how they act, I only care if it works and how the customer is treated. Does red have problems, yes, does Arri, yes, Canon, yes, sony, yes, panny, yes... point is they all have their strong points and weaknesses we pick ad chose them and their models based on that.

To each their own but really I find the attacks on Red fans very funny when most of the time they are coming from rampant fanboy's of other camera's, the big difference is that for the most part the red users are just overly nice polite and happy, yes the can be quick to snap on other cameras and new people, but for the most part on the other hand red detractors are very blunt rude and disrespectful most often in retaliation to quotes that have been misinterpreted. Plus if you look for it every site has a Jim that everyone fawns over and treats like a god, it's human nature... we suck up to those in power, not all of us but most.

Why all the cynicism? hatred? rudeness? disrespect? I'm talking in broad terms here not just in regard to red, it's the lesser man/woman who gives in and lowers themselves to others, who attacks a person instead of the topic being discussed, who throws out hurtful or cruel comments at another human being in some attempt to bring the other down, hurt them and those they love, or just make themselves feel better. Just because hatred and evil built this world doesn't mean it should still run it, be nice to people give them the benefit of the doubt, be happy, live life, and you know what everything will be a whole lot better......

.... Or not just my eccentric outlook on things, aside from the IMDB comment pages I have never run into a group of people like this, why is it cool to hate something? I don't hate any camera choice, some I may not understand for certain applications but for the most part they all have their places and all have their strong points...

Now lets see those announcements!

Have a good few days! I hope I have not offended anyone as that is never the intention of my posts and if I have I sincerely apologize, I'm just very passionate about morals and the persona and attitude we chose to portray to the world, and people acting out of blind passion mixed with frustration and little understanding....
PEACE

I think the cost will be more than 10k. I imagine the brain will be affordable but the modules will remain at their current prices. I've followed reduser closely over the last three years and i believe there was mention a while ago that the media(now SSD) would not be included with the originally planned Scarlet fixed package. Whether or not that package is long gone i think the proof is in the pudding that RED overcharges for all accessories.

Somehow this poignant plea for compassion and good manners seems a little out of place when we are discussing what is at heart a totally capitalist enterprise. This is not a humble goatherd hand crafting paint brushes to feed his malnourished family, this is a big hard-ass business out to make profit. Some business people are ethical, many are not. What many find ridiculous in the RED enterprise (and this extends to Apple) is the swing towards cult of personality that is so evident in the pages of RED user. There is a clear attitude that RED, in manufacturing a product which they charge a lot of money for are doing the consumers a favor and this idea seems a little peculiar to some observers. The internet can be a tool for good or evil, the marketing/social information model used by RED turns off a lot of people that just want the straight dope and don't want to buy the t-shirt and don't care about belonging to the club.

Hmmmm. I agree with S. Matthews. Now that it's in vogue to be angry about pretty much anything you want to it seems that "anything goes" (including typing a lot of words with not a lot of thought behind them).

30 pages already . . . about a pending camera announcement . . . priceless!

You are correct that is the way things work, I just wish they didn't work that way. I don't see capitalism and being a good moral person as mutually exclusive, damn hard, but not impossible. I understand my views come from a far from reality perspective it's just hard, so many only thinking of themselves... most often rightfully so, I just wish we could work with and appreciate and understand the others out there not exactly like us, rather than what seems like trying anything we can to push them away.

But as I have realized most of my ideas and concepts exist in a vacuum where the variable that is the human being does not come into play, I now understand all my views and opinions would fall very short in the real world.

Here's to hopping we find some happy middle ground in there somewhere!

Have a great week!

Who complain because $38,000+++ for a working package is too expensive...
EPIC-X with same configurations (one battery, one 64GB SSD etc) that basic Alexa has costs around 57,000$ (with next years pricing). EPIC-X brain costs 36,500$ on RED store starting january 1st, but you can't even turn the camera on with that only.

edit: that price is the calculated price for customers in Europe (which will have to pay around +21% VAT depending on the country). For people in US the price is 46,000$.

So you want Jim to charge on a sliding scale based on your ability to afford the camera?

No… I want people who can't afford equipment to stop complaining about how expensive it is. If your project (s) can't sustain / payoff a return on equipment you "want"to buy, then rent / buy what you can afford.

I can see a lot of posts coming at weeks end from people who want it all and want to pay less than $5-6K.

Amen.

Even if Jim charged a sliding scale people would still complain because they don't want to part with their money. But no one could complain that the camera was unaffordable because the price would be based on your ability to pay.
