Red Scarlet Announcement Info

I think they just started to over hype it because they are afraid what Canon might announce. They try to steal attention from Canon, but it has already backfired because people are expecting at least 4K or S35 and some other updates for Scarlet. Jim has stopped the hype already few days ago because he realized it had already made harm for him.

Honestly....

I guess I'm speculating just as much as anyone else...

But, if people think they're gonna get a Scarlet--whatever it may be--for less than 12K starters I feel bad for RED. It's like someone asking me to deliver to them TRANSFORMERS 1, 2, or 3 for 50K, VFX and all.

It's completely unfair and unrealistic.

It's completely unfair and unrealistic.

Live by the sword, die by the sword (the sword being hype, in this case)

Jumping on the Nov 3rd Canon date created hype... saying "it's RED's biggest annoucement ever" added crazy hype... since then we have seen Jim post how amazing Scarlet is, how things change and 3 year old decisions no longer make sense.... He just kept adding hype and cryptic messages... What are the REDusers going to do.... They are gonna speculate about these changes until the 3rd.

They only have themselves to blame if expectations have gone through the roof.

If it's 3K 2/3rds, with a price increase.... Why are they hyping it so much?

I'm not sure what extra features they could add to the already amazing specs that have been around for the last year or so. Are people really going to care if they boosted it to 180fps at 3K, for instance? Or if they added a 2 year warranty.

All great improvements, but not really "the most important announcement of their history".
I agree, Scarlet is, with the exception of modularity (announced November 2008) and HDRx (added a year ago), actually very much the same camera announced in spring 2008. Except it'll probably have tripled in price before its release. Epic, on the other hand, was announced at "about $30,000," and has seen a modest price increase, despite a whole boatload of spec improvements and new features (HDRx, which added $1,000 to Scarlet's price, seemed to have added nothing to Epic's). Yet Epic was released without much fanfare. Red had been talking about Epic for years and didn't ask would-be buyers to "forget everything we've been telling you for the past three years," as they have with Scarlet. So I guess if you can get past the inevitable substantial price increase, Scarlet will seem like the greatest thing in Red's history -- provided you develop three years' worth of amnesia. Then, like the old joke you've never heard before, it will be new to you. I hope I'm wrong and Red has some fantastic new news. But Jim Jannard has spent the last week or so tamping down expectations. I guess if you have none, you won't be disappointed.

If you can do the effects for 25k... I'd be happy...

Of course it's fair. Red has been setting these price points. They even set the original price of Epic-S at "around $12K." If they can't live with their pricing, they should either keep their mouths shut or reckon pricing a little more realistically from the get-go.

I'm still betting the Scarlett will be a light field camera. 3K or 4K I don't know, Jim already said they figured this out and improved upon it, he also said to forget everything about the last few years.

Hard to know exactly what a camera will cost until it is finished and ready for production. Red didn't start the design process with a hard fixed market price in mind, more a set of performance and feature targets which keeps changing over time as the technology unfolds. So does the price.

But they're the only ones who do it. Sure, a host of variables play roles in determining price, and these can change -- with a resultant change in price. But when you make a point of mentioning a price, people have every right to hold you to it until you can explain the change. You can't just quote a price and down the road excoriate would-be customers as being unrealistic if they haven't been privy to all the forces that have raised the cost of manufacture. If you create an expectation, you have to assume responsibility for it if it comes back to bite you on the ass.

It's also a little cynical to hype an upcoming announcement as if it were the second coming and then shortly before tell everyone that the only bad news will be a price increase -- but then imply the rest would be good news if one would forget all the hype of the previous three years.

Of course Jim Jannard could pull a fast one on us and claim that 3K at 120 frames per second is better than 4K at 30 frames per second.

Except Jim has pretty clearly said that the Scarlet will be ready to ship as soon as they announce the updates, and certainly Red is not going to have a light field camera ready to ship without first demonstrating the technology numerous times before.

Agreed. The impression I got when Jim mentioned this was that they were still in the process of developing a high resolution light field camera.

He said the problem with the Lytro was its low resolution, that Red had the 'answer' to that issue, but I got the impression it was still in development.

I may be completely wrong, maybe they have developed it and maybe it will be included as part of the Scarlet's specs. We'll find out in a couple of days I guess.

Jim has clearly said a lot of things, many of which run contrary to others. Within the space of a couple months, he went from stating that the Epic-S would start production right after the Epic-X pre-orders had been fulfilled to eliminating the Epic-S from their lineup. While the Scarlet may very well be ready to ship in a few days, I'm certainly not going to be overcome with shock if it's pushed back by weeks or months.

If Red is true to form, light field feature will probably be a free software update, not a new camera. Maybe a new lens involved. (you will have to pay for the lens).
