Red Scarlet Announcement Info

The new RED has a 10k lightfield imaging system pumping out RAW files that allow you to apply any level of focus & exposure in post. Everything will be properly exposed, and focus pullers will be out of work.

Here is the consumer stills version http://www.lytro.com/

But will Scarlet be the worlds first 4k consumer video camera?
RED has made it clear as day that they make professional products for professionals. I don't think you are going to get a working Scarlet rig for anywhere near consumer prices. Maybe I'm being pessimistic but I would guess upwards of $15k for the brain and minimal accessories which is still a bargain.

Pricing will be hard to figure out for the RED I think, even if they offer a package. There are so many configurations, and everyone's list of "must-haves" is different.

For instance, let's talk about camera control.

Do you want just the RedMote? Or the Side handle? Or are you fine with the touchscreen? Or maybe you want the side handle and the red mote? Or the side handle and the touch screen? Or the red mote and the touch screen? Some experienced EPIC shooters think the red mote is invaluable - an absolute must have. Others think the side handle is absolutely brilliant, but don't use the red mote much (if at all). So the price for your camera control interface could run anywhere from $550 (red mote) to $3100 (red mote, side handle, touchscreen).

Are you happy shooting to the battery in the side handle? Or maybe you want the dual battery module? Or do you need the quad battery module?

My point, I guess, is that there won't be a "standard" configuration here - which makes it hard to put an MSRP on the "standard" Scarlet kit. And it makes it even harder for any person to guess how much it will cost another person to piece together their desired Scarlet kit unless they know their specific needs.

Heh...seeing as some folks are having fun and fantasizing here....(initiate fantasy sequence)

LX5 Body
HX9 Zoom lens
Canon S95 lens aperture
NEX5N low light capability
M4/3 sensor size at least
RedCode RAW 1080

...now THAT would be PocketCinematography!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

That is (separate camera here)....ON TOP of having 7K(usd) Scarlet with interchangeable lenses at a full frame sensor. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) (I'm easy to please) lol

Don't worry, sometimes it doesn't feel like, but time passes by very quickly. Nov. 3 will show up very soon. But first I am going to Photo Plus Expo in NYC next week to play with the new Sony cameras!

true although the really discouraging point for me is that you are going to need to drop some loot on ssd cards to even begin shooting. the 64gb(smallest available) card is $950.

Its not very dissimilar to buying p2 cards, 8gb will get you 32minutes on a 8gb card for around $500, and the Scarlet will roll about 43minutes on a 64gb card at a 7:1 redcode. Longer at lower but still awesome redcodes, all for $950

The difference is minimal in price.

I would personally love to get a 2/3" pro camera for less than a hpx250. A smaller-sized less featured Sony PMW-350K for $4k no lens would be perfecto! Haven't a lot of us decided that we either need a super35 + a 2/3 ENG camera, or we can live with just a 2/3 camera if it's filmic and highres? I mean, with many broadcast 2/3 lenses you are looking at the equivalent DOF of f/2.8 or less all the way through the range on an AF100. How often do you need it more shallow then that..
Super35 is cool but there's still not many lens options for a pro manual zoom that aren't crazy priced.

I hope somekind of killer-deal 2/3" redcam comes out eventually, I'd buy 4 if they had timecode...

Anyway wait and see.

speculating on a camera that doesn't exist is important to do because it forces you to save your money and it's exciting. but it is also slightly a waste of time. I will get excited for the Scarlett once I start seeing some tests. until then, to me, it's still just like 2005 when they first announced it. 3k for 3grand. that was so exciting. and now its 2011. and thankfully I didn't wait for it till then. I've have 5 different cameras since then.

A 2/3" Scarlet for less than $10k that blows the doors off of the competition's $30k+ broadcast cameras would be just fine for me.

Scarlet was first announced in 2008. First RED 1 was announced in '05 and released in late '06.

RedUser is good for a laugh.... Jannard has made about 5 posts exclaiming that Nov 3rd is the biggest launch in their history and hyped it beyond belief.... and now makes a post to try and lower people's expectation. The double edged sword that is hype.

Agree. The REDhype has gone beyond ridiculous and all the swipes at canon set a stark contrast to the pride they have for their $2000 titanium Canon / Epic mount.

Red needs a PR person to control Jim's posts. They are offensive at times to the other people in the industry. Do you see other small companies "talking trash" on forums? Very unprofessional.

I really expected a 2/3 sensor on the scarlet. But on de Red-forum/Recon Jim is really trying to give hint's and trying to make us crazy with telling how this is going to be what people want. He gives the impression scarlet plans/specs are heavely chanced.
This morning I read in the Recon part ''burning a hole'' something like this (don't know exactly, it was a english saying). I can't find it anymore
Jim: I will give a hint, we really set the mark for other companies.
Jim: We fully understand what everyone wants... trust us.

That kind of stuff in combination with the anouncement sametime with canon and other references to canon, and the Epic-S don't show up in the readmap defenitly makes me believe the scarlet has a bigger sensor.

Incorrect. Red One was announced at NAB in '06 and first trickle shipment began in Sept. of '07. Our first Red (#214) finally shipped to us in Jan '08 and that was only for what was ready.

Typical of them, they could have been so much better if they had a true PR. He is like a war lords pumping his troops with war words etc. I was a great red admirer at the start but there communication is terrible, wait when Nov 3 comes and that some start to complain that the announcement falls far bellow their expectation. He will tell them that everything was up to change and his diehards finding all type of excuse even if the first culprit was his doing. I would really like that Canon to deliver a one two punch on Nov 3. We can see what Canon has as sensor tech in its latest 1d X, lets hope they deliver most of it to its new video camera.
