Jim

thats the current roadmap, i don't see Epic-S on the list. Jim said in the last month that "the camera you want is on the way."

Jarred has said they have been off the road map for months. What Scarlet is or has become no one knows at this point. Scarlet was originally announced as a lower priced model line of several models, including an S35 version, which supposedly was becoming Epic-S, but they may have taken a different tack with it and added it back to the Scarlet line without the Epic sensor.
It is also possible they can't mass produce the fixed lens Scarlet design right now because they can't get critical lens components for it. Ted hinted at this in interviews at IBC where he was pointedly not carrying the prototype Scarlet fixed that he had been demonstrating at NAB. He said they were moving toward something different that they could actually manufacture.
Jim also said that the market has changed and what seemed like a good idea 3 years ago might not be the best solution today.

RED will be now competing with itself. I don't see a bigger than 2/3" , 3K sensor on the Scarlet otherwise it will kill the higher priced line. Remember when we used that argument when referring to the video DSLRs and the big companies crippling the cameras to protect themselves? Funny isn't it?

It is going to be interesting to see what they come up with. I'm thinking 4k APS-C sized sensor, new gen but same size and format as the original Red 1 M. Smaller than Epic's 5k, but more than enough to compete with other low end large sensor production cameras, (not DSLR's). Hope they can pleasantly surprise us on price, but if its S35, maybe $7-8k for bare brain seems likely.
That would instantly obsolete the RED One, which is still selling for $25,000. I just don't see that happening. That's a huge price spread. Don't know how they can take that much cost out of it.
Yet that's exactly what they were going to do when they originally announced the $7K Scarlet S35 nearly 3 years ago. Will Red return to an S35 Scarlet? Who knows. I'm a little puzzled by Jim Jannard's approach to the November 3 announcement(s). On the one hand, he cautions against unrealistic expectations; on the other, he hypes it as the most significant day in Red history (i.e., bigger than any other announcement or release dates). I suppose he wanted to whip up fervor and enthusiasm and to surprise everyone. However, he had to realize that hyping the event would trigger wanton speculation and only heighten the inevitable disappointment for many. Other than his barely contained enthusiasm, I can't explain Jannard's motivation. Sure, he was responding to Canon's announcement announcement. But he could have just said, "Red will shortly release an update on Scarlet." Or not said anything at all until November 3.

Meh. Just hit us with an S35 and be done with it.
No need for all this marketing bs.

They have, red one MX, and the EPICx and M. I believe you mean "hit us with an affordable s35" but affordable is a very subjective term.

I don't think it's a matter of crippling camera's to not cannibalize their other products, mostly because at this point we have no idea what they are releasing. All we have is rampant speculation from people who know nothing. The scarlet is a whole other market (rather it was who knows where it is now) 2/3" is a market of it's own, just as S35, and FF35 are, though some seem to forget that and think they are in competition with each other(a ff35 camera is not in the same market as a 2/3" camera...very different selling points).

The other aspect is considering what red is already offering in size and capabilities I'm not sure(what do I know) they could make a camera that is S35 and sub 10k or whatever even if they wanted to at this point. If they could they would have to cut back on certain features to make the price point, and considering that camera (epic-s, scarlet S35) has been on the roadmap for years it's not like some drastic change of policy, and it seems to have been the most sought after of all the DSMC cameras.

When I see Red releasing trickleware and charging us up the ass for firmware software etc.. like most other companies then I might start to buy that logic, but at this point it just doesn't add up.

You're probably right, but what would justify Jim Jannard's exuberance and hype? Finally releasing a 2/3-inch 3K camera with the same specs announced two years ago? He's pitted Scarlet against whatever Canon will announce on November 3. If Canon announces a 4K S35 or APS-C camera, Red loses on resolution and sensor size. If Canon's camera is only 1080p and comparable to the Sony F3 or FS100 or Panasonic's AF100 (and thus at least a year late to the game), then Red wins on resolution, but looks a little like a strapping teenager trying to pick a fight with a clueless, doddering old man.

Doesn't matter who "wins" the fight both win no matter what. It's different to everyone, some will just look at the bare specs of each camera, others will have certain standards that if not met will not even be considered, some will be die hard fans who will only buy from one company.

you all realize you are Red's hype machine(when you talk about them and their "hype"), it's their job to talk like that and be over confident... anyone remember Muhammad Ali, it's your job to look at the facts and try and act rationally and not get caught up in the machine(...try).

On one side of camera marketing you have huge ad campaigns commercials etc... on the other you have direct posts from owners and designers of the system who are passionate about what they make and do (not saying the other companies aren't it can just be impersonal at times) two different approaches where you will get two very different styles.

to each their own I guess, I just wonder sometimes how you promote? it's an honest question not a knock as i have yet to do much haven't needed to but "hype" or marketing is a very necessary thing good or bad as long as people are talking about you most I would assume are happy about that.

meh I'm off, fun times!

Its definitely a kool-aid fest over at red-user, there is now a semi-official (non sticky) scarlet boner thread where the junior red dudes can all dream about potential lens choices for the potential Scarlet-C.

I suppose there is some value in having an entry-level Red machine, but there are way more players in the market now and unless there is something with a little more horsepower than a 2/3" sensor under the hood its hard to see how this can impress anyone at this point.

Can anyone give an unbiased view on how things stand in terms of manufacturing?

I'm quite interested in RED, but have always been put off by the back order situation. I keep an eye on reduser... and they make alot of noise about it being better, but I still see a whole host of products on back order...

As long as it's the interchangeble lens version and well under 10k, I'll seriously consider it.

As far as making the Red one obsolete, oh well, the Epic has already done that. Not obsolete in quality maybe but in form factor/features. At that level the price difference between the two camera bodies isn't that much IMO.

Red 1 is expensive to build. It wasn't designed for high volume production line assembly. Given volume production efficiencies and the new electronics it should be easily possible to produce a 4k Red 1 equivalent with current gen image quality today for about half the original R1 price or less for the bare brain and about the original body price for a decent package. F3 price range.

Red will do this whether it is Scarlet or not. They won't continue to produce R1 forever.

If they are releasing a 2/3" interchangeable lens model they better have the B4 adapters for ENG lenses ready to go as well or who is going to buy one? Seriously, their competition is an EX-3 up to ENG setups with this type of camera. At one time I was going to explore this route but to be honest, I gave up waiting. There are a lot of choices now and more on the way. This all seems a couple of years too late to get very excited. But hey, we will all be tuned in to watch the theatre.

They say anticounterfeiters spot counterfeit not by studying every variation but by studying the genuine article, and knowing it forwards and back.

I encourage everyone to sit down and design their ideal camera. (That's what I did, here*) That's the best way to make level-headed buying decisions. It may be a while --- or forever --- until your ideal camera comes along, but at least you'll know what you're compromising.

It's easy to get excited by the new shiny camera from X manufacturer, but we all know Buyer's Remorse. Sit down, design your own camera, compare what's out there to your ideal, and buy what you have to now if you want to make stuff now.

* That page is three years old, and my ideal has actually become less, not more.

I'd bet everything that I have, that Red will NOT be announcing the fixed Scarlet alone. If you made me guess, this quote from him (Jim Jannard): (RedUser.com)

It is burning a hole in my head waiting to announce on Nov. 3rd.

I am so excited to announce that I can hardly stand it. Most of you know that it is hard for me to keep a secret. It kills me.

All I can say is that if anyone in this industry is not paying attention on Nov. 3rd... you had better have something really important to do that night.

RED stands for disruptive. By definition. It is in our nature. We love a good fist fight.

Nov. 3rd. 6pm PST. Sharp.

Pay attention.

Jim

Is a reference to the Epic-S line. It wasn't on the road map, and someone asked him about it, he basically said not to worry that he had something 'even better' in mind.....

I have to think that the fixed lens is still happening because it is in the store (although not active/for sale)

As I am writing this, a CRAZY idea occurs to me, maybe the fixed lens has an S35 sensor now? Hmmmm.......that might be interesting. Anywho....I'm happy for Red, it's Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglas. I'm not sure which one is Canon and which one is Red. Or maybe it's "The Battle of Thermopylae"....bottom line: They get to stand toe to toe on the same night with their enemy and show what they are made of. Either way, we win!!!!

That last message from JJ makes me think 4K, large sensor Scarlet body for 10K or under :))
