Red Scarlet Announcement Info

If this is the story so far, Canon has just made an extremely bad move. And most probably they won't ever recover from it. Jim is learning a thing or two from Jobs...

Yeah, where do you go from here? I just hope RED keep finding ways to push the boundaries and deliver amazing products!
I'm in the same boat as many - $14k isn't in my price range, but rental prices I expect to be consistent with similar costing products once they are a bit more commonplace, and that means I could actually use one of these sooner rather than later!
Can't wait to see footage tests from this, this is EXACTLY the spec of camera I was hoping we would see on the market, but thought it would be 6 or 7 years before we saw it at that price. Cinema standard spec at a price that an low level filmmaker could actually afford. I expect to see some great new talent coming through making good films with this. I guess this will now be the time of the DOP, because if everyone is shooting with cinema cameras, hiring a good DOP to make the images as sexy as possible will be the only way to set yourself apart from the masses!

So rental houses that own Epics are basically screwed. Red is screwing them over pretty bad because why rent a 1500$ a day Epic when you can rent this 9k$ Scarlet for probably 500$ a day or less and have the same exact image

Am I the only one bummed out about not getting a true s16 digital camera that can shoot 120 fps?
Not excited about a dumbed down red one in an epic body. They'll make a killing on accessories.

Nope, you're not alone. Craving the high framerates as well.

They're not "screwing" anybody - they sell cameras; it's not their business to help rental services get the most out of their investment...

Am I the only one in thinking its obvious the scarlet IS the epic, (literally) and all they are doing is slowing it down on purpose (and also because the sensor won't be rated as high)?

I have been saying this for a couple of months now. The most cost-effective option for Red was always going to be building an Epic with more limited circuitry/data rates - economies of scale make the manufacturing of Epic cameras cheaper, but the feature-set still maintains a clear distinction between the two.

And for those wondering about Scarlet 'undercutting' Epic - the market for $45k cameras isn't a particularly big one. The market for $14k cameras is.

LOL. True, but Red is "striking first". If Red let's Canon get in the game, ....those EPIC rentals aren't going to look so great. DOG EAT DOG. That's what is going on here. Red is TOTALLY CORRECT to throw the kitchen sink at Sony, Panny, and Canon:

BTW...(get ready for this)

I promise: They will throw back. And they'd better throw BLOODY hard....because this is gonna be tough to beat!!!! Cheers and congrats to us all!!!!

Although one thing is for certain, not only is Scarlet going to absolutely destroy Epic rentals, it will also destroy Alexa rentals. I guess Red figures they will kill the epic if that's what it takes to kill the Alexa, at least they'll still have strong Scarlet rentals whereas Alexa will be finished lol

Pretty sure once the market is saturated with Scarlets that it'll be well under $500/day.

Well for multiple days definitely even off the bat if you rent for a weekend rate it could be even cheaper. How will this NOT absolutely gut Epic sales??

I can foresee a lot of Epics suddenly going on sale at rental houses

You gotta love what happens in this country when an "outsider" gets involved. It seems like the big boys have been "lumbering" around for some years...basically playing "nice" with each other.

THIS....IS....WAR.....

And if you don't know what they are fighting for.....they are fighting for US. (Or the money in our pockets, lol....)

We'll see what happens in the next 6 months with the big boys. If I were Sony, I'd up that little rebate that they have going on the FS100/F3....to....uh....I don't know: 2-3K!!! lol.

I'm NOT saying they're going to "pack it in" or go out of business. I'm just saying: To get my money back into their pocket(s), they're going to have to do something RADICAL. Something EARTH SHATTERING....something like Jim Jannard JUST DID TO THEM!!!!
