Red Rock Image upside down?

KGB - there is no question flipping gear upside down works. There is no question the end result is the same.

Like being able to cross the Atlantic in a rowboat, it is doable. I just don't want to put up with the scorn from my professional crew and the rube goldberg factor.

My sentiments exactly. But not everyone shares those same priorities, fortunately there are various choices on the market for everyone. I just happen to think that an upside-down adapter should cost less than a rightside-up adapter, so I have had a hard time understanding the economics of the existing adapter marketplace.

But there are obviously many, many satisfied users who are using upside-down adapters happily.

From the limited amount of video I have seen using various adapters, the image quality has been fantastic. I am really glad to see so many viewpoints here, because myself personally...I do not find an upside down picture acceptable.

When you compare price from shooting with an HVX and these adapaters versus a 35mm camera, or a larger setup, then yes I can understand some workaround needed to achieve a similar look.

My problem mainly is, flipping gear upside down in order to see a picture properly does not look very professional, especially if investors are on a set. Secondly, yes most NLE's can flip it back in realtime, but that will NOT be the only effect used. When you add color correction, transtions, titles, etc....you are seriously increasing rendering time just to preview your own work (especially working with HD).

We are now seriously looking at the Letus35 FE or the Extreme. I agree with Barry about if the upside adapters were cheaper, then I'd understand it a little bit better. But when you have a $700 adapater that can do what a $1200 Red Rock can do (with less stop loss) with a right side up image...I don't understand using anything else.

I mean, all things considered, it all comes down to the quality of the image.

Two films using Red Rock, Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour, and Deadland....look FANTASTIC. ESPECIALLY Deadland.

With the Letus35 be able to produce this kind of image quality?

Actually, specifically, can the Letus35 Flip Enhanced do that quality?

What is the main difference between the Letus35 FE vs. the Extreme other than stop loss?

The L35FE is capable of superb quality. With any luck I'll have some footage next month that will show what it (or the Extreme) can do.

That's a comparison chart. Also notice that there's another new choice, the Letus35 Economy. Looks to have many of the improvements of the Extreme, but only a $200 price increase over the Enhanced.

Ok, we talked to Letus and they really seem to be the way to go. We are having a hard time beating that price, with the right side up and the 1/2 stop loss.

We are currently looking at the Letus35 Economy. What accessories will be needed to make that work with the HVX200? We ask the sales guy and he didn't have that info handy.

What kind of rail, matte box, fine focus setup do we need? Someone mentioned earlier that the only pain in the ass is that the camera and lens are on different levels because of the Image correction. What is needed to remedy that and make everything fit together?

Also, what adapater is needed to attach the Letus to the HVX?

(I know I'm being a pain with all these questions but you guys are being a tremendous help and I appreciate it greatly)

You'd need an 82mm->72mm step-down ring. Nothing else.

Rails might be helpful, but as for what you *need*, everything's included except that lens adapter ring.

Well, we were looking at options for extra support. Is it safe to just find rails, focus pulling, matte boxes that we like, or are there a select few that are compatible with this setup?

dont you need to jack up your camera (if rails are used) to account for the offset of the letus adapter?

I had no idea about the Letus 35 extreme, but I can tell you that I'm in the boat that doesn't want to deal with upside down footage anymore.

I don't wanna flip screens, I don't wanna add filters to footage in post, it's just tired already. If the Letus 35EX is promising such low light loss AND an image on par with the M2 and SGpro there's really no question... great looking package or not it ends up being the winner for me.

Guess I need to get in line now.

Phoenix - I have the Cavision setup, and it will accomodate the Letus Height wise. This is important, because the adapter will require the camera be raised a bit.

It all depends what you want / need. I have the full monty on my cam and it costs megabucks. In fact, the camera is the cheapest part of the whole rig!!!!! Remember, when you get a follow focus ($1k), then you need gears on your lenses (150 for a set of 3 - I have 6 primes) ...etc. etc......Really determine what you need the rig for.

I shoot shorts, music vids, and commericals, but am doing my first feature. Mainly, I shoot by myself. Whenever I need to light, however, i use a cre who is used to working on Arri 535s, Sony F900s, etc. So I've tried to tailor my rig to something these people are used to.

Last commerical gig I walked onto elicited a wow from the business owner. Everyone likes fancy (expensive) hardware.

So tailor your accordingly.

Correct..the version pictured is one of the test mules, and would survive a truck driving over it. The retail version is less than half that volume, and about 60% lighter too. It's CNC machined from billet aluminum.

For folks with an external monitor or a cam that flips already, we will continue with the Brevis in it's current form. For those in the know, this is an expensive thing to do, but we are committed to offering the basic adapter, flip module, and 2/3" relay module in flexible configurations. For example, if you're shooting on the JVC HD210, you don't need a flip...but a relay module + adapter means less mass, length, and of course light efficiency.

The optics of both the Brevis and flip module still represent full 36mmx24mm full frame performance. There is no zoom factor so a 50mm lens still has the FOV of a 50mm film lens.

I have the Cavision setup as well. I suppose that's a really good thing, because I had a bit of a problem wrapping my head around how to get this thing to work. Basically just have to use the Cavision! yay!

Thanks for the tip, even if it wasn't a response to me. =DD

Ain't that the truth. It's cool, though, that the HVX outfitted with all that stuff looks like big money.

Hey Kholi

Let me know if you need pics or whatever. It took me a couple days to figure the Letus mounting out, and now it works slicker than ****. The Cavision stuff is top notch but there are some things that need to be done to make it all work - base plate raised to max height, matt box clamp must be turned upside down, follow focus shifted to the right hand side, etc.

Well, I am sold and today we have put in the order for the Letus35 Extreme. They told us that we had most likely made this new batch, though they have been selling like hotcakes.

I would like to personally thank everyone who has contributed here, all of this input has been a tremendous help and made our transtition into the HVX world a much smoother one :)

Now we're exploring lenses and mounts and all that good stuff. :)

Once we get the setup working, we will post pictures and samples.

Thanks again!

I am working on "Deadland" right now. The film looks fantastic. I am encountering a problem with the upside-down footage, though. Hopefully someone here can help me.

It's a minor annoyance, but even with the "rotate" filter applied in FCP, the clips still are displayed upside down in trimming and on the timeline.

My work around so far is this:

1. Start a new project with the upside-down clips. Add scene, take, logging info in the browser (the clips were imported without the meta-data from a Firestore).

2. Save the project (on the desktop or a new hard drive).

3. Now, apply the "Rotate" filter to all the clips and export them to a new hard drive. (Doesn't hurt to have another back up of this tapeless media). Make sure to export each clip with it's EXACT original file name.

3. Save the project, but don't overwrite the original one (from step 2).

4. Unmount the hard drive with the original upside-down footage and open the original project file (from step 2).

5. Re-connect the offline footage, using the newly created "flipped" footage. The original meta-data will be retained and the clips will not need to be adjested or re-rendered.

Please let me know if you see any holes in this scheme - or if you know of a better way to permanently flip the footage (perhaps a 3rd part utility?).

Thanks for all your help!

sounds good to me. Thats what we usually do. though if you use the RAylight plug in, it will invert the footage for you, directly form the MXF file.

Turning monitors upside down!!!
You guys are crazy . . . where's the problem?

All I do (when using a 35mm adapter) is put my P2 cards in upside down--works perfectly every time!

No kidding? Well I may want to invest in that. One question though. The footage has already been captured directly off the firestore as .mov files. Were they .mxf files at one point or is that only from P2 cards?

I haven't seen this feature mentioned before when I looked into Raylight. People that use it - does it makes things in FCP 6 easier or harder?
