RED Renames Scarlet - Now "Epic Light"

The Scarlet is still listed on the Red web site as "Coming Soon" if Jim is not careful he might be asking for a truth in advertising suite, I may be wrong but I thought that some software companies got in trouble in the 90's for promoting vaporware.

I don't follow...how is "Coming Soon" false advertising, or the Scarlet vaporware?

If the Scarlet no longer exists or Red knows that it will not be coming soon then promoting a product as "Coming Soon" may be view as misleading advertising.

I don't think it can be false advertising with products that aren't yet for sale, especially considering that they once had every intention of building the S35 Scarlet.

As far as I know, nobody has purchased a Scarlet from Red, so there wouldn't be any basis for a lawsuit.

"Vaporware is a word used to describe products, usually computer hardware or software, that were not released on the date announced by their developer" this is from the wikipedia site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware it further states "Announcing a product that does not exist to gain a competitive advantage is illegal via Section 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, but few hardware or software developers have been found guilty of it. The section requires proof that the announcement is both provably false, and has actual or likely market impact." the article lists the RED Scarlet as an example of hardware that may be considered as "Vaporware"

The Scarlet still "exist", the 2/3 that is. As far as releasing dates, there was never one set in stone officially as far as i know. Moreover, Epics will be out soon, so I don't see the "problem" people have with Red. Some will choose Alexa for their project, some will choose Epic some will choose something else (f3, f35, af100, 5d etc...). All the better for "us".

The Scarlet does, in fact, exist. Your own example, from Red's website, depicts the Fixed-lens model, which hasn't been renamed.

With regards to the formerly named Scarlet S35 - tentatively named Epic Light, then Epic-A, now considering Epic-S - to imply that a name change constitutes false advertising would be akin to suing Nintendo for advertising Project Dolphin or the Revolution.

I think people are reading way too much into something this basic.

Not a fanboy but I can't wait to see this thread in year and if you don't think RED will be around in 5 years.....I wouldn't take investment tips from you.

see this thread in a year? i said 5 years although a bit sooner i could see as well. i dont expect you to take investment tips from me either but what really makes you think for {{{CERTAIN}}} that RED "will" be here in 5 years? reading thru this thread many posters made some very curious and valid arguments as to scenarios of the risks of having too much money (Jannard) and no one to be accountable to (Jannard) when running a company where deadlines can be moved when the one man show (Jannard) chooses.

i think the bigger question right now would be...if you could invest in the company RED with a notable amount of your dear owned money....would you vs a more established and better track recorded company? im talking investment only...not using their gear...only investment.

for me the answer is a big NO...and thats nothing against the quality of their product but rather the the mood and mindset of the RED leader.

If I had $100k to drop on RED as an investment today, I'd do it. For a multitude of reasons. But the first and foremost is that I prefer to invest in companies with a singular focus, and the talent to meet their targets. RED has proven time and again they they understand their customers (not their wannabee customers) and that they can, and will, build products for those customers that other have not, can not, or will not.

As for more established companies... like who? MGM (bankrupt), Panavision (nearly bankrupt again), Kodak (I don't know ANYONE betting on film long term)... The winds of change are among us my friend. When the largest film camera manufacturer in the world releases a new camera to much fanfare, and it's digital, changes are afoot. And RED has a head start that no one seems to be cutting in to.

Fair enough. But that same moody leader has built a billion dollar enterprise once already. I am sure as hell not going to bet against his future success.

In a year I believe Epic and Scarlet will be out that was the year comment. And I would invest in RED...not my life savings but I would pick up a few shares.

You weren't asking me, but.... YES

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares a few years ago in:

1.) Delta Airlines, you will have $49.00 today.

2.) AIG, you will have $33.00 today.

3.) Lehman Brothers , you will have $0.00 today.

But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago,
drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for the recycling
refund, you will have received $214.00

Based on the above, the best current investment plan
is to drink heavily & recycle.
It is called the 401-Keg.

It seems that I misunderstood, it appears that only the s35 Scarlet has had a name change the fix lens Scarlet may still exist after all. By the way there seems to be another name change. http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=52245&page=44

As of now... we are considering:

EPIC-S (from the old Scarlet name... or STANDARD model)
EPIC-X
EPIC-M (for monster machined)

Does that work for everyone? :-)

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{when i spoke of investing in another company vs RED i meant any company and not isolated too only camera companies. but yeah, those companies you mentioned "now" are defunct or nearly but in their day not so.}}}}}}}}}}}}

fair enough as well. i hope your right and im proven wrong on this one.

If I were a betting man... I'd say that the whole cheaper scarlet line will go bye bye. It's now obviously not in their best financial interest to have to deal with the consumer market. All of the complaints and quality control and issues at a price point that makes it evenly hardly cheap anymore. I'd bet more on what barry was talking about a while ago. They'll make it a still camera and be content in selling it as such....

It's also not going to be around anytime soon, but maybe they should just stick to the middle to higher end cameras and not have all of this consternation. It's just unforutnate at how many people have coverted a camera that won't be theres now or ever! We shouldn't wish for something that we can't get... Personally it was the S35 that I was interested in and I think it was going to be around 11K... Not too shabby, but if it's 18k who knows. I also would probably opt for the sony as I know it would ship on time and all of it would be working flawlessly. The whole build and firmware pita would just piss me off...

So, I guess people shouldn't be too upset. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me repetedly... well that's red for you. I do see that when you have a maverick leader with no board of directors and no accountability to producing anything other than the absolute best most perfect camera, sure it's exciting but it's also a big giant shell game....

I for one am thankfull it will put an end to the comparrisons to the AF100 or whatever else. I'd love to be able to afford a Red Epic but it's just not in my cards. Maybe after my next feature but who knows....
