RED Renames Scarlet - Now "Epic Light"

Easy there. It's just been renamed for now. Whatever the buzz is, we'll hear it eventually. Until then, no need to get worked up...

I'm amazed it took this long for them to figure this out....

s35 should always have been in the Epic line up... Scarlet S35 just muddied the waters too much.

Now they have a clear range.

Scarlet - s16mm/3k
Epic - s35/5k

I expect a hefty price increase on the "Epic Light" though.

substitute 'killed' for 'renamed', very misleading thread title, followed by speculation

edit:
thread titled has changed, applaud

Killed/renamed or changed. It's all kinda the same thing. Scarlet S35 was a dream for a cheaper cinema sensor Red camera. That is basically "gone". It's gonna be more expensive then previously stated, so *not* cheap. Sigh, before it was even born...

To quote South Park, "how do you kill that which has no life?"

called EPIC Light. The features have changed as has the price. I'll update in the next two weeks.

Jim
No mention of "increase" or of how much. Could be small. Could be huge. No freaking need to speculate or call it dead - it's been renamed and is going to be "different". I don't see how "different" features + price = dead?

Epic Light....sounds sort of like an Oxymoron.....

Yes...the old concept is surely dead. It's not the same. It has been changing since day one and with this "final" name stamp the old is completely gone. How can one not count the Scarlet concept as "dead" even if it transformed into something else?

EDIT: It's still all speculation on my part anyways...especially since he said "there will be an announcement soon about a new Scarlet update".

well...this company seems to be in a general state of disarray... first handmade epics and now epic light. lol

and they wonder why people are lining up to buy Alexa's instead. oh those people being like Roger Deakins shooting his first digital film with it.

yeah...

I guess they'll increase the price around the F3 price. Which would be a shame (for me who dreamt it under 10K, not for the features which are still more for the $), but being an epic with less features should make it available sooner than later theoretically.

Whatever his new announcement is going to be I say he should go back to the original Scarleet concept except with a fixed (or non fixed) 35mm sensor/lens. Take out all the fancy new features like HDR etc. and maybe let it record 3k/4:22 to Redcode or something. Basically...water it down a little bit. Keep the high speed recording and the price very low etc. and that alone would kick Panasonic, SONY etc. (in the AF100 price range) in the gonads.

...ok...maybe keep HDR.. :)

Does this mean the end to the "all the other cameras suck next to the Scarlet" threads?
Well, it certainly ends any speculation about a Scarlet S35, that's for sure.

Of course, it now means we'll have a plethora of "all the other cameras suck next to the Epic Light" threads... sigh.

But seriously, kudos to Red, this is exactly what needed to happen. The idea of "Scarlet S35" has been a millstone around the Epic's neck since it was first announced. Now they've made it clear, distinct, clarified everything. Whether our membership can afford to buy into the Red Epic or not, will likely cause anguish -- I'm sure that the revisions he mentions will involve a substantial price increase. But now at least there's no more "why would I buy an Epic instead of a Scarlet S35" confusion. Scarlet is exactly what it is -- the 2/3" version. Epic is what it is -- the big full-hog cinema sensor version.

And hundreds of thousands of Scarlet-waiters can now officially get off the fence and decide which side of the line they're gonna stand on.

An amazing way to do business. No wonder the Japanese took over the camera business. I predict Red won't be a long standing camera business. It would probably eventually be sold to a Japanese company out there! You can't really create cheap super cameras magically. Now we have to realize how thankful we have to be to Panasonic for the GH line and the AF100. Lets see how many of those poor lost souls in the Scarletuser twilight zone start seeking refuge here. Sad, sad story, but I knew that would happen.

On the positive side it seems that at least this Epic Light will come out fairly soon.

But if the most basic working kit costs more than 12K I'm probably gonna be left out, and not just me but pretty much 90% of people.

The Scarlet S35 used to be a camera that someone who bought an HVX could perhaps make an extra effort to get.

My gut feeling tells me the EPIC Lite brain is going to be around 14 K or so.

Pretty much double of what RED promised with Scarlet S35 in 2008.

Oh well, at least the AF100 is here.

Like I predicted, price is probably gonna go up.
Red has a long history of revising prices. Never, ever, has a price been revised downwards though. The original Red One price was raised on us before it even delivered (well, sort of -- the price stayed the same, but some equipment they said would be standard, became extra-cost options, so to buy what we thought we were buying, suddenly cost more). Red did compensate us reservation holders for that by giving us first-buyers a $2500 credit towards necessary equipment, which netted it out about the same, but still, the price went up; if you didn't have a $1,000 deposit on file, you paid more for your Red One kit than it was originally announced at. And it went up again with the inclusion of M-X; the original $17,500 Red One is now $25,000.

Scarlet's original $3,000 has been revised and revised (design and price) until we're at, what, $5,750 last we heard? Features have changed, and design has changed, and so has price -- but always upwards.

Epic was priced at $28k, but now if you want a handbuilt early model, it's $58,000. Which is new, and exclusive, and early, and all that, yes -- but, as always, the price change is upwards, never downwards.

With the Scarlet S35 moving into the Epic line, it would be unreasonable to imagine that the price would be moving downwards. Jim said that features are changing, and so is price. So don't hold your breath for it coming down; obviously it's going to go up.

Yet another reason why two years ago I decided not to pay too much attention to the whole thing, and decided "hey, call me when it's in the store to buy" -- because trying to keep track of all the changes amounts to not much more than wasted energy. I look forward to seeing whatever it is when they finally deliver it, but man, you really have to take them at their word when they say "Everything is subject to change - count on it."

I think it's pretty safe to say at this point that the "dream" of an affordable camera with an S35 sensor and resolution comparable to film is gone - for the time being.

I'm just kinda pissed off that they made me lose two years following their news every day.

I'm gonna take Reduser from my bookmarks and forget about this camera until someone tells me there's an S35 sensor for the original promised price I can buy.

At least we have Panny to the rescue, as usual.

Really puts into perspective what Panasonic and Sony were able to pull off with their new cameras in such a short amount of time. Anyone not giving them their due credit has their head in the sand.

Looks like the Sony F3 just got a boost. Especially since their new price is 13300usd. The price on Epic light isn't out yet, but...I REALLY doubt it's going to be less than the F3.

You would think that Panasonic and Sony would welcome this news. Now that the option of Scarlet S35 is off the table, I think
a Panasonic or Sony purchase will get a second look. I would see where an "EPIC light" could become a very hot rental commodity.
It will be interesting to follow the "new" pricing of the "EPIC light".
