FS7: Red Raven and FS7

I bought the Sony on advertised specs, and as an early adopter (my camera is 0075) it really was a leap of faith. I have no complaint when shooting with XAVC, but and it is a big but, the RAW implementation is an absolute joke which having spent a decent chunk of money on XDCA/Odyssey only to get unusable internal ProRes and unusable 2K RAW HFR I must say I'm not impressed and will be considering my next camera purchase very carefully.

Same here. I like that the unit gives timecode in/out but I'm on the verge of selling it... I never use RAW HFR really anymore, since I've gotten some weird results on the O7Q+ and just feeling like the Oddysey+FS7 never really seemed as bulletproof as it was on the FS700. I used to highly recommend the FS700+7Q, I even wrote a blog post about it that I still get comments on almost a year and a half later. But there were just so many weird issues with the XDCA RAW + 7Q that I never really got the confidence to use them. Now I pretty much just use XAVC. Almost tempted to sell my A7S, 7Q+, and my XDCA, then just go internal with the FS7 and an A7Sii.

I'm keeping my eye on the Raven and the new Scarlet Weapon... Or I'll just make do with the FS7 for another year while saving up the funds for a big boy camera.

the 7Q makes a phenomenal monitor, especially if you convert and load up some decent luts.

But you can just use the sdi out for monitoring.

I'm in the same boat as you to be honest.

Yes, Highly recommend "Bloodlines" on Netflix for impressive cinematic F55 examples. Dripping with mood and beautiful!
Doing a little experimenting with the FS7 menus, I find that lowering the DEFINITION setting goes a long way in eliminating any so called "Sony look".
Just like Photoshop and other software, the definition setting seems to be about edge detection between different objects in the frame.
Play with that setting a little and see what you think.

Anyway to put this thread back on topic, I just put a deposit down on a Raven :)

Figured if buy all the supporting gear I can just swap out a Raven brain for a scarlet weapon one down the line and not lose much.

Will keep the fs7 too for now. But selling the XDCA extension unit and 7Q in the marketplace :)

Haha damnit, we're saturating the market! I listed my Odyssey7Q+ the other day on here, reduser, and on some Facebook groups. I was just about to post my XDCA unit.

If you guys have XDCA's to sell and don't mind shipping to Toronto, Canada let me know.

Likewise I'm looking for a used FS7 if you're planning on dumping Sony all together.

In Canada there is no duty on items that are valued at $60 or less. I'd say the XDCA has about a value of that now wouldn't you? :p

Otherwise there is some tax on items imported but if you're running a business you claim it and get it back anyways, so it's really a non-issue.

For those Canadians bringing camea goods into Canada of any value, if it is manufactured by a country with "Favoured Nation Trading Status" and almost any country that camera gear come from qualify including mainland China are duty free. There is the odd exception.

Camera items excluding the camera body itself can generally be imported using the "Camera Acessory" tariff code: 9007.91.00.00

GST you can claim back if you are a registered business with a GST number.

Customs clearance is relatively easy once you have done it a few times. I would recommend clearing the items yourself, if you do a significant amount of importing.

There will be no duty on the XDCA adapter. I assume it if manufactured in Japan (China and Taiwan are OK as well) it will be duty free as it is manufactured by a Favoured Trading Naiton. Importing a good by a Canadian from the UK is no more difficult than from the USA. It is the point of manufacture that is key and what the tariff code is for the item. Camera Accessories are duty free.

It's true about the trade agreements but what paperwork might you have to ask senders to complete in accordance with such agreements? I also know you can't argue with the people at the post office, if they say you need to pay duties so they can give you the item then you will have to pay it and go through the process of filing a claim later.

All this is much easier if you use something like FedEx, UPS, etc.. but again all the right paperwork has to be done by the sender for it to go smoothly.

I bought stuff from Abelcine that was "duty free" and got charged duties on it without fail.

Damn, I was tempted to buy an XDCA for RAW, but after all of the comments on this forum I think I'll be happy to stick with XAVC!
