Red Lighting looks like CRAP

I searched the forum for something along the lines of the DVX100 not handeling RED lighting very well. I shot a music concert with the dvx, 30p and when the red lights would come on stage, it would look interlaced and choppy as poo.

I was just wondering if there was a way to set it so it wouldn't crap out with red lighting.

As far as I remember there isn't much. But I can't really remember well at all.
We did a short where I wore a red shirt though and it faired well so I imagine there is something you can do.
Maybe you just deal with it and shoot whatever you need to shoot. My shirt goes all over the place when I am running, but the more staged shots seem to show that underexposing the reds might help by making it less visible.

Eventually, you have to convert to DVD or broadcast, and the result is the same. Best to avoid if possible.

Just select a pallet that doesn't have red or orange or purple... spend more time on the set decoration and wardrobe... well worth it.

How do you come to the conclusion that the results are the same?
The more you compress the footage, the more the colors suffer, ok, but if you already start out with DV it only makes things worse.
I´m totally fine with red colors on most DVDs or in broadcasted stuff, simply because they originate from better chroma sampling formats than DV.
Just go and shoot a concert with red stage lighting on a DVX and on a HVX in DVCpro50 and see for yourself...

i've been researching. and the only way to deal with it is..

shoot with the most stock scene file you can. as soon as you start to push anything, you get crap reds..
if you've got crappy reds already.. try adding a chroma blur. this works quite well. it gets rid of most of your issues if it's not too severe. but your footage will be a bit softer.

or you could invest in the nattress' "G Chroma Sharpen Progressive" plugin for FCP. you can download a demo of it. it works really well. but again.. only if it's not too severe...

It's a miniDV/DV25 issue, not a DVX issue. Same results with RED on an XL2, or any other DV25 camera.

You can lower the saturation on the camera, but it doesn't make the problem go away, just doesn't jump out as much. Best thing is chroma blur/deartifact/median in post... but then don't go back to DV format, or you're right back where you started.

I red in A.C. that some guys cut holes in red gels if they want the red look without the out of focus, over saturated, look.

Chroma problems with reds are always going to be there with SD DV. The methods I would use to help cut down on this is that when you know there will be an excess of either red or blue, especially red (green is usually fine), make sure to, as long as your DP allows it, turn down the chroma level on your scene setting dramatically. Also, you can sort of "patch" up the problem in editing by using a horizontal chroma blur if your NLE provides such a tool.

I love these threads, the same (right) answers are repeated over and over in slight variations and the thread starter doesn´t even bother to post a "thanks"...

Thanks everyone! .. Sorry, I haven't been around an internet connection in a while, to THANK everyone for their replies.

Can you post a screen grab from footage that exhibits this problem? Sounds like it's much worse if you shoot NTSC DV because of the 4:1:1 chroma resolution?

Agreed on the last part, but hey. I need to hear it over and over. My skull is 2" thick.
US Latin, your video kicks a$$. Loved it--well done.
