GH2 RED Epic and GH2 Quantum V9b

Can really see the GH2's baked in look here, thanks for sharing Kholi!

You sure? =P

And of course, no problem.

For reference, GH2 is the first one, Epic is the second one. 720/60 on GH2, 3K @ 120 > 60P on Epic.

The stills were a reference, though, that the look wasn't the GH2's actual look at all: I shifted a few values around to match the Epic's image. Pushed it's more like it. :D

It's funny how we talk about cameras like they make all the difference, footage like this proves to me that with good lighting, NICE GLASS, controled shooting and good composition you can make any one of these cameras LOOK GOOD. THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT ANYONE CAN PICK UP A GH2 AND TURN OUT THESE RESULTS, OR A RED EPIC FOR THAT MATTER (Which is EVEN HARDER to use if your a novice IMHO). I had a talk with a buddy the other day who's an editor and she was saying how much she hates editing red footage because more and more people want her to become the cinematogrpaher in post these days. She was saying how annoying it is to have to tell a client: YOUR DP SHOULD HAVE FRAMED THE FOOTAGE TO LOOK THE WAY YOU WANTED IT AND LIT IT FOR THE STYLE YOU WANTED, now it's going to double your post time and budget trying to reframe every shot and color it to look the way you want it to. She was telling me how often the clients respond: Oh, we shot on red and thought that this type of thing was standard.

It's still the person behind the camera that matters, or in the edit suite (LOL), but somewhere along the line a SKILLED TECH needs to be involved for a project to look pro and have what most amature films lack: CONSISTENCY.

Just because almost everyone can afford a really nice guitar doesn't mean they'll all become Jimi Hendricks, think about it.

P.S. Nice shooting! Is this with Sage's latest hack?

You make solid noise, and I listen. IMO Barry's always been right: the revolution happened years ago with the DVX, now the gear's gotten to the point where you're just choosing stock (camera) for the job. GH2 Hack will serve me in places that I would normally never settle for less than RED. That's saying a ton. It's not 4K/5K, but it's plenty good.

Admittedly, there's a reason why I'm getting back into DSLRism more often... I'm just tired of messing with RED footage. There's more than the cost of the camera to pay, and even with an installation of Rocket Systems it needs time. True, you could always 1st light on set and kick out PR4444, never look back at the raw... but, nobody does that because if you have raw you should use it.

Reframing helps, I wont' deny that. But, it doubles time like mad and for features and shorts, I'm beginning to just say stick with what you have, or the minimal leway that 1080/2K offers.

I feel bad for your editor friend, cause what she says is true.

True indeed. My first feature's got a lot of issues that I hope to correct (will correct) second time around. And, I'll be using a "lesser" camera to do it.

Just because almost everyone can afford a really nice guitar doesn't mean they'll all become Jimi Hendricks, think about it.

Indeed. I'm a gear h00r, I love it. Love playing with it, love thinking about it, love geeking about it. I think I love the process more now, though, and so I'm beginning to fall behind. It took months for me to pick up a hacked GH2. Two years ago I would've been one of the firsts on the block.

The knowledge helps empower, though, so you gotta do what you gotta do!

Using straight driftwood V9b, which is sweet for 720, 1080/60i, and glorious 1080/24.

Funny, I have two features coming out that are both DSLR features and I DROVE MYSELF CRAZY TRYING TO GET THINGS TO LOOK CONSISTANT. I spent months trying to stabilize things, tweek color and reframe things (Much to my dismay as I saw resolution loss and pixel peeped LIKE CRAZY) and guess what? I watched them the other night with my friends and because of the genre' of both films (SLASHER HORROR) they asked WHY THEY BOTH LOOKED SO CLEAN... Guess I forgot the first rule of making movies: SERVE THE STORY.

I have since wound up adding a bit of grain and then the other day I saw this artical and litterally laughed out loud:

Read what he says about switching from the red one mx to the epic!

Oh, wasn't saying your adjusted patch wasn't great, just that I've stuck with v9b. I need to make sure I have 1080/60i ready and spanning, and all of the modes spanning at that. Does your patch have an adjust 1080/60i?

It does have stable 1080i now, the lower bitrate setting spans for 50/60 modes, the higher bitrate gives you 7.5 mins. The 1080i is like v9b, the 720 SH is tops.

And you're saying your 1080/24 FHD is producing better results than Nick's original V9b? Or just the 720?

The 1080i is very much like v9b, it is intra w/ same framesize, though not hard frame limited. It will do well on easy scenes, and fall apart for complex scenes (same w/ v9b)

Guessing that's a no on 1080/24.

Ah - I see now you wrote 24. Yes it is slightly different; lower encoder settings, which allow finer pass through of detail/shadow grain (Nick has been back and forth on including these; they were in Q2).

Really, dude? You actually spelled Jimi's last name with a "ck"?! You should be banned from this forum for life!!! :kali: :Drogar-KnockedOut(D

The fact that no one else caught this before me is even scarier! What the #@%! is this world coming to?

Kholi, Do you just break out the epic for paid gigs and then use the gh2 for your own film? Are you already shooting it?
