Limited time only, because I know this is gonna go south.

The settings are on the vimeo, but here they are again:

EPIC @ 3K 120FPS 8:1 Compression
HR Zoom @ 3.5
Soft FX 1/3
ND 0.6

GH2
Standard -2-2-2-2
Zeiss Ultra Prime

Not supposed to be a guessing game, I think it's pretty obvious which one is which so I didn't label them.

This isn't a verus -- it's for my own testing to see how they cut together.
Epic's compression goes higher than 8:1, so the quality isn't indicative of what the camera is fully capable of. There's no contest in 4K or 5K. What-so-ever.

I didn't shoot tight and wide, I grabbed something almost similar to what the Epic was shooting. Anyone can cut together a tight and a wide, try wide and a wide.

Form your own opinions, but for a limited time only. I'm gonna rip it down in a few hours. Video will not be available for download, sorry guys. Next time though, cause I'm gonna do some more testing as we get closer to project dates.

Thanks Kholi. The footage looks great. Just curious about why you shoot @ 120 FPS and 60 FPS for this. Is it just for slow motion?

Yeah, slow mo for beauty. Trick o'the trade.

And, I did forget to mention that the GH2 stuff's 720.

Just don't try this with any of the canon DSLRs. :| Trust me. C300 would hang, though. All the way.

Did you color correct them at all? And the second shot is the GH2 I take it?

Not any real color, just adjusted to see if I could quick match them before I packed up to shoot. Gh2@720p is definitely the second one.

kholi,

I have to ask, why did you choose 720P for the GH2?

Also, of course vimeo show macroblocks on all of the footage.
Also, I was surpised the Epic displays this much noise under this lighting.

BTW, what was the ISO setting for both?

Slow mo. Twixtor = no thanks.

yeah, it's a lot more macroblocky than the straight-ups. There it's sort of telling and sort of dispelling at the same time.

3K is much noiser than 4K or 5K. Also, 12:1 compression @ 120FPS. It would still be kinda noise at the best compression ratio, but retain mountains of detail in comparison to GH2 Hack, which would be pretty noisy as well.
BTW, what was the ISO setting for both?

800 Epic (ND, Soft FX)
160 GH2 (no NDs on cam, shooting at 5.6)

When I get time (which is scarce right now, even at this moment I'm prepping to shoot tomorrow) I'll do some more testing to see how 5K and Gh2 1080/24 cuts.

Thanks for the quick reply kholi!

"5K and Gh2 1080/24 cuts."

Now that would be very interesting.

I will say that both presented at 1080p, the GH2 definitely hangs and could be intercut with little issue. However, project at 4K and the Red cameras will easily beat the GH2... I don't think there's a question about that. But at 1080p, for around $700-$800, the GH2 is a monster. Thanks for posting the comparison.

Excellent lighting, excellent art direction. Excellent color palette. That is what makes the GH2 look so good. I have a strong feeling if you were to put any properly exposed camera in front of that set, it would look good.

Got a point. That's always why we say "all things equal", that's how you really see the differences in cameras, and learn that a lot of them are plenty enough. Only thing I wish I could've done was get right into the same frame, but not viable/practical.

One day.

Great stuff Kholi, thanks for sharing!

They do cut together beautifully. I'm curious: Why didn't you go to the Epic's max frame rate? Because of the Lighting setup?

I think it was way too slow/overkill for most beauty work, and we had to figure out a flicker issue.

But comes in handy for a lot of different material.
