Red Competition Running Scared?

Hey Thomas,

You're right... Mostly... I am not to sure I can get on board the concept that "First of all, digital storage devices become obsolete faster than they wear out, so it's very possible that you won't even a device around to read the media."

We have no problem moving our projects to newer media when necessary. And our 10+ year old drives work just fine. Machines do not wear out over a course of years sitting on a shelf unless, like film, you expose them to some pretty extreme conditions. Unlike film, the drives are a little more tolerant of temp changes, also unlike film, they have a serious problem being dropped from high places. With film the lid comes off the can sometimes, but that's as bad as it gets.

I completely agree that film can be "saved' in various forms, but once you lose data, you can be screwed in 7 different languages unless it's minor.

Digital media requires as much TLC as a film neg, but you are on a DV forum so you will find some loyalty to the electronic media in this zip code.

I am sad to say that I do not see film being the dominate player in the industry in 7 years. The big thing is going to be the post chain. Video data is going to reach a stopping point once we get the picture as large as we need it (I think 4k may be a little much for most things). However computer thru-put will not slow down and there will be a day when our $699.00 laptops are editing uncompressed HD footage while the kid surfs Pokemon at the same time (Of course that RAID suitcase he'll be lugging around will look silly).

I do believe that digital storage will be a little cheaper than film neg storage. The main goal will be : don't set the room on fire, and don't drop them. As for flash media, I would avoid it

Inflation? Computers are cheaper today than they were 10 years ago.

Real estate was cheaper in 1994 than it was in 1984 but it didnt play out that way in 2004.

Yeah, and the price of water just keeps going up, wtf. Electronics in general, computers in particular have actually decreased in price over time (especially when you consider advancements), while real estate has had steady upward movement over time. Landwise, what we've got is what we've got. Technology-wise, we're barely scratching the surface. You are an anachronism. You come on this site to pimp film, that's fine. Just don't expect a lot of support. I love movies shot on film. I love movies shot digitally. I love movies. Time marches on. Move with it, or be left behind.

It is not as easy to lose data on hard drives as some people think. Even though a computer may not be able to read the data of a damaged hard drive it is actually still there and can be recovered in a clean room. A guy at PC Mag tested a companies data recovery skills by throwing a Western Digital hard drive on his barbecue, grilled it until it was blackened, and then sent it to the labs. The lab was able to recover %100 of the data on the disk.

I have drives sitting around on shelves that are at least 7 years old and they work fine whenever I pop them in. I have no experience with film so I can't speak to that, but hard drives are much more robust then they are given credit for.

Also hard drives are getting cheaper every day. I now see half terabyte (500mb) drives showing up on dealspl.us for $179.

ARealIndyFilm,

Crap to who? You? I would agree the talent means more then the camera? Who are you to call others work crap? I applaud anyone who tries.

He or she is someone with an opinion that carries as much weight as anyone else. In mass, those opinions can turn into profits or losses, since these opinions determine if they want to see someone's movie.

We all have called others work crap. It's nothing to be guilty about. It has nothing to do with how hard someone works on something, but what the end result is.

Giving A for effort doesn't mean you have to praise a poorly made film.

I myself have worked on many films for weeks on end and said the end result was crap.

Trash to one is treasure to another! Opinion is one thing! However saying 99% of others work is crap! come from one who probably kicks the dag, and runs down thire kids refrigerator art! And that is my opinion!

It seems you have your blinders on completely my friend.

My point is an unarguable one......

Let's say we have Janusz Kaminski, Steven Spielberg's DP lighting our film....

Janusz, shoots the scene with both an HVX and an Arri S35....

Which one will be taken more seriously, have more latitude, and an overall better look in the end?

Exactly, and that my friend is what RED may allow us to deliver. With the proper lighting and acting...etc. our work will have the potential to look just as good as Kaminski's! And ofcourse, I'm no idiot, if something isn't lit well it isn't lit well and...will look like crap. Talent is talent, and there will be many talented people shooting on the RED!

Exactly what??

It's like saying DaVinci would have made "Mona Lisa" better if he used an airbrush, or Michelangelo would have would have made "David" better if he used power tools.

I'm sure Kaminski can do things with an HVX200 that no one else thought about, just because of his talents.

If you give a talented person anything, they can figure out how to do something unique with it.

A hack with a Red camera is still a hack. There is no potential there if it didn't exist before.

Really, Thomas seemed to not only argue, but refute what you had to say 150%.

Good show Thomas, I have nothing to add.

I would've liked to have left this thread open, but its gotten too personal. You are welcome to express your opinion, but you are not welcome to insult people in the process. I deleted the personal attacks. If any of this vitriol spills into other threads, :banned: vacations are in order.
