RED CAMERA Prelim. Specs

An optical finder would have added a tremendous amount of cost to the project and extended development considerably. The weight of the camera goes up along with the cost. Plus, when you are in low light, an optical finder is very difficult to see through and focus. The solution is a very high res EVF with some Greame magic.

Thank you Jim, those are good reasons. The low light, I always have trouble when shooting with my Canon, and the auto focus would be definitely useless.

How could adding a rotating mirror add that much to the cost though? I thought that it's pretty standard?

You should definately trademark that: Graeme Magic (tm) :)

With a mirror you still loose light to the eye as an inverse of shutter angle. So, as you open up the shutter to get more light to the sensor, (which is what you need when it's dark) you get less light to the eye, stoppping you seeing whatever it is that's dark.

Also, although an OVF looks great when you're not shooting - ie mirror locked, it's looks awful when you do shoot, all flickery, making it practically impossible to use for it's intended purpose.

Graeme Magic :-) Like it.

Totally agree Graeme
I cant stand looking in a OVF since it flickers. Impossible to set focus plus you don´t see what is getting on the film.
I shot a short adventure and we used a strobelight to get flashes in one scene. When i didn´t see the flashes in camera then i knew it was on film. So backwards.
I´ll be so happy with a highres EVF. All the extra info you can get in it, exposure, framing markers, audiovolume, focus assist, etc.
Thanks for developing one.

With the high-rez EVF, will it able to reveal chroma resolution? will it be 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 or .....?

Hey guys, cant wait for my red to be available.. But hey... I knwo the camera coems with a little lcd on the side but what do we do about viewfinders? can i buy a panasonic viewfinder and slap that on the red.. or do u need a HD viewfinder.. im sorry.. i have no idea what im talkin about. i know about cameras just not the technical aspects with parts they are suppose to have on them....

I'd Say lots of hype... I think I seen at Terminator using one of these in T3... j/k.

I'll just wait until its released and all the bugs and issues get worked out. Then Ill make my decision.
