RED CAMERA Prelim. Specs

Does the camera's high resolution display give the option to display 2.35:1 cropping so I wouldn't have to use tape while framing?

what's in it for RED to hype up and not deliver? If the camera sucks, I'm sure spite will drive sales even further into the ground, ya know?

Somewhere in the IBC booth there was a bit of a screen mockup of the display, and it said "programmable guides" - so you'd be able to set guides wherever you want them.

Between all the mounting holes and the programmable guides it seems Jim not only wants to take on camera manufacturers, but also make gaffer tape obsolete.

Newbie price/reservation questions:

Newbie price/reservation questions:

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered elsewhere. I've randomly read a number of threads in the forum and searched for posts mentioning "price" but did not see these specific questions addressed.

The company is taking "reservations" for the camera, which I suppose could mean as little as you are guaranteed to receive your production unit before retail sellers receive any. Is there any more to it than this? Are you just getting a spot in line with a reservation?

Second, the website lists $17,500 as the MSRP, the SUGGESTED retail price. Has there been any hint or confirmation that that will be the actual purchase price for those brave (and/or rich!) souls that fork over the reservation downpayment and buy directly from the manufacturer?

This seems an especially relevant question because, in this day and age, a new product is almost always available from reputable resellers for some bit less (sometimes a lot less) than the MSRP, even immediately upon entry into the market. Then again, everything about this product seems to defy convention. So should we expect that there will be some fractional discount of the MSRP to those forking over cash up front for a reservation? Would it make any sense whatsoever from a customer care standpoint for these advance adopters to NOT get a price break that may subsequently be passed on to later adopters via resellers? Same questions apply, obviously, to reservations re the lenses that RED will be marketing.

I'm obviously very, very interested in the camera and am extremely impressed with the bold and visionary approach to its development. If it were coming in at a total of 17.5 grand, lenses and all, it would be tough but within my abilities to acquire. If that's only going to get me the body, and I'm looking at another 10-15 grand for lenses and accessories, then it's obviously well beyond what I can afford. So before I allow myself any more fantasies about owning it, I'm just wondering if these MSRP prices are THE prices or, as is usually the case, are high water marks from which some amount of discount can be assumed.

Reservation holders will get there cameras in the order they come off the line. The $17,500 price is guaranteed. It is not after we lock down reservations the end of this month.

aaahhhh...... .

Jim?

Jim?

Jim,
When my number comes up in the queue, do I have to buy it then or could I wait while I get financing squared away without having to forfeit my R and reserve pricing? Ideally I'm ready to go, but I just hope I wouldn't have to cancel my reservation just because I didn't have all $17,500 to wire to Red when my unit is ready. Especially since I don't know exactly when I will need that.

You "only" need $16.5K since you already paid/pay $1000 to reserve...

You pay it when your camera is ready. For those who are making their reservations today or later than today, I'd think you're not likely to see a camera until a few months (perhaps several months) after initial shipments begin.

Remember how the Z1 and DVX and HVX and HD100 all rolled out -- very, very limited supplies at first. I would assume (and yes, it's assuming) that Red will follow a similar path. They'll make them as fast as they can but how fast can that be, at first?

First shipments are targeted at "early 2007", which most of us around here are settling on as April (although hoping for earlier). Reservations placed today are going to be in the 600's, so I wouldn't expect you'd have to come up with the dough before, maybe, June? Maybe? Could be earlier, could be later, we just don't know.

Humbly speaking, I wouldn't like to buy one of the first units, but don't get me wrong. I am not suggesting they may be defective or that Jim's team may miss something. I just think it's quite possible the specs and features may be improved after RED gets field tested by all you rich people :)

What I'm concerned over is the workflow. When working with either film or video (tape), you can do ALOT of takes and keep them all. This is crusual for many movies and if this is going to be 4K onto a harddrive, it will be limited on set. Now how limited will it become? How much more must we pay if we want the workflow and full quality of 35mm, from shooting to editing?

The details sounds nice but when doing a movie, having tapes or the film makes you able to batch footage if harddrives crashes. How do we store many hours of filmed footage until the movie is complete?

the workflow in 35mm with 4k scan is not simple too, the storage size is the same. I personally will work mostly HD 1080p - i will use a traditional HD Tape deck to do daily backup...like i do on HD shooting. I have no use for 4k - yet. I dont see demand for it - yet. Who really needs 4K except the hollywood guys ? When its time for 4k i am shure we will have affordable storage systems.
