Red Camera (photos)

well, I'm new here so hello! I'm curious to know the kind of ccd chips they may use in this camera( I mean size)
To quote Jim Jannard
" It is our own proprietary sensor. You won’t find it available from any other company.
We’re not a fab house, so we contract fabrication with an outside manufacturer. Regarding the specific nature of the CMOS technology, it doesn’t serve us to give too many details. But I will say it’s a miracle sensor in its capabilities. Super 35 optical format, 24.5 x 13.7 millimeters, with over 11Megapixels contributing to the image. The sensor delivers excellent dynamic range and low light sensitivity, and permit us to shoot at up to 60fps in 2540p, which is 4520 x 2540 pixels – bigger even than the 4K spec for Digital Cinema.

One reason the sensor is oversized is in the viewfinder, or on your monitor, you can actually see outside of the recorded area. When you’re shooting in 4K, you’ll have an extra 10% visible that’s outside of the recorded area. It’s one of the things the film guys really want, this ability to see outside of what’s being recorded, for lead-ins.

Because of the nature of the sensor, it can shoot at these maximum resolutions at up to 60 frames per second. Any frame rate you like, including 23.98, 24 and 25fps. It also scales or crops down to 2K - all the available HD outputs are actually created from that. There’s advantages to both: if you crop down to 2K, you can use Super 16 lenses, and shoot at up to 120 frames per second. Scale 4K to 2K, and you can take full advantage of 35-millimeter depth of field. So it just depends on what your intent is. And these choices continue down through 1080p, 1080i and 720p."

My dad and I both have Wranglers, he said that he was talking to someone at a dealership and they said that laws are being passed to require side air bags in doors. Apparently, they don't want to add them to the design, so they're discontinuing it.

My only worry at the moment will be the support for editing systems especially since I currently use Avid. As far as i now the avid has his own share of small issues with the hvx. I wonder how all of this large editing sofware companies embrace this new camera.

lecterj2: the chip was designed by RED, it's the size of 35 mm film and captures 11 megapixels, which is alot more than the HD cameras on the market today.
(so it's not 1/3 or 2/3...)
read that interview linked a few posts earlier for more details

ok, so I stopped saving for the HVX, my funds are now going for the RED, giving me at least one more year to save until they come out.

In the meanwhile, I think I'll get one of these RED cameras

i did thanks for the info. I had stpped my purchase on the Hvx until either this cam come out. Or there is a newer version of the hvx addressing some issues.

Yes, this thing looks like it stepped out of a Buck Rogers movie. How is that a bad thing? I think it's awesome - it's not like the design lacks ergonomics, ingenuity, or functional ability (form the looks of it.) I guess some people aren't happy without a semi-matte black plastic shell in their hands. This thing looks like what it is - a high-tech tool. BTW, does anyone have $30K I can borrow 'til I finish my first feature. You would so be helping me out.

looks like the new one has side airbags now...and a bunch of other gizmos...including NAV...which will be sweet.

Something bugs me. From now on the news of the cam will spread like wild fires specially on Big electronic manufatures, not to mention hollywood studios. I wander if larger bussiness entities or establishments that main focus is to rent or sell top of the line camera ( cinealtas, pana, etc) equipments to its consumers be worried that this new camera will affect their revenue ( supposing that it does deliver what promised) and therefore approach the red company to try to persuade then to increase its final retail price.

just a thought .

Kind of how the Big 3 auto manufacturer's put the kebosh on the 100 mpg carburator?

I doubt they'd be able to persuade Jim Jannard.

He seems to be pretty committed to his vision.

I called all day and finally got through to put down my deposit. Glad I'll have a year to get the money together. I'll need every bit of it. But I have MOTIVATION! :D

My first suggestion to Jim: Make the LCD so it can be detached and, via cable, set up in different locations on the cage.

that's worse than the balsa wood HVX mock up. $40,000? I think TC was drunk and ending up at some UFO museum in Roswell. The NAB show is in Las Vegas!

LOL, good one.

Could somebody in nab ask about what resolution will the camera's lcd be?
I was hoping for optional optical viewfinder...
Yep, just bring out those 4.5k monitors...
"We have 11Mpx sensor and 0.2Mpx lcd in the camera, try focus!"
