Recording to AG-HPG20 from AF100

Yes, I've used one. Works well for a studio setting, but it's too big for a one-man-band kind of thing.

Only annoyance out of it was that 24p gets recorded as 24p-within-60i. But they've announced a new HPG24, which should solve that.

I bought a HPG20E for external recording with my AF101. I can confirm that 25p nis recorded over 50i into the P2 recorder, but when you play the clips back, on the recorder screen they are shown as 25p.
Referring to the quality of the recording I did note that in AVCI100 mode there is less posterization in the pictures, but the noise is the same as in AVCCAM.

Before I sold my HPG 20 , I did some tests and the difference between the native recording and AVC I 100 seemed small , which I attribute to the 8 bitness of the HDSDI output.
10 bit AVC I is a whole nother animal. I have a 370 and shoot with 3700's regularly so I kinda know the diff.

So I say to Jan C: "Please baby, please baby, please" channeling Spike Lee in She's Gotta Have It---- give us the grown up 10 bit AF100 with the in camera 10 bit codec recording capability.

I want what you want Mark and onto P2 but (not holding breath) meantime...

Would the HPG20 record..... 10-bit, 4:2:2 AVC-Intra from the AF102?

(The 4:2:2 and P2 being the most important to me)

Yes, the difference is small, I agree with you. But don't forget the 422 AVC-I color sampling which increases the croma resolution of the pictures. Unfortunatly you can't record a true 10 bit 422 due to the 8 bit output of the AF101, but the HPG20 works very well as one piece with the camera. On the other hand you can have on P2 cards a solid AVC-I 422 10 bits recording (with 2 bits set to 0) that you will be able to tranfer from the deck to a small portable HDD. This is my positive experience.

Has anybody else had experience with AF100 or other cameras recording on a Panasonic HPG20 P2 recorder?
Did you note any impruvement on pictures?
I have only 25p over 50i signal from SDI out connector. It is not a true 25p.
Any report would be appreciated to me. Thanks.

It has been awhile since this topic has been brought up (at least to my knowledge)...

I was looking into the HPG20 as a possible external recorder for my AF100. I really like the P2 system, and have lots of cards. But it seems to me that the HPG20 is (1) still rather pricey and (2) records 24p as 24p-within-60i.

Then there is the HPD24, but it's kind of impractical as an on-location recorder.

I wonder if Panasonic has true successor planned for the HPG20? And something that's more affordable? All this is relative, of course.

It's also a bit mind-boggling to me that no other company has yet produced an external P2 recorder. Imagine something like an "Atomos Samurai" that records to P2 cards -- be it AVC-I, ProRes, or DNxHD! Maybe I have my head in the clouds, but I would dig something like that at the right price...

I think the Samurai with SSDs kind of negates the reason for P2 cards in an external recorder. Particularly on cost alone.

I think in many ways, you're absolutely right. But I've invested heavily in P2 cards so I already own all the "SSD's" I'll ever need (at least for quite awhile). For me, it's just about getting the recorder. Coincidentally, I've located a gently used HPG20 being sold by a friend of a friend in Hawaii for a price that is really really hard to pass up (we're talking around a 75% discount from what it normally costs). So, this may work out nicely for me, as I own an AF100 and HPX170.
