Recording sound afterwards - idea

Shouldn't it be possible to make a .mov in the H.264-Codec of my edited file, copy that file to the card and to view it on my 550D? I could use this as a guide for sound-recording. The actor just has to copy the movements of the footsteps, etc.

Why do you need the original actor to do Foley? That's something that is done in post with a completely different crew, including a Foley artist who re-creates all the little sounds.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the Canon 7D/550D T2i forum, isn't it ? Or have I stumbled across some kind of international broadcasters site. Joking apart, most of the guys here are one man bands, all using pretty cheap, in relative terms, equipment. All the guy needs is some info on whether this can be done or not.

Colin, C2V was just pointing out "the usual" process I think, I dont think he intended to say Muroshi should have a foley crew. So please try to tone it down a little.

Muroshi sorry Im not sure of the capability of the camera at hand. But I'd say unless the file formats matched the cameras original with the same folder structure thats created when the camera normally records video, it wouldnt work. But Im assuming a little and you know what they say about assumption.

No. It has already been confirmed that the camera will only play content it recorded back.

Hey Noel.
Did you notice the "joking apart" in my post ? It is never my intention to post anything that needs "toning down". I simply felt that the post would not be of any help to the OP, who is obviously looking for answers, rather than details of how its done in the film/broadcast sector.

There goes my idea... :( Maybe there is a way to fool the cam with a thumbnail file with the same name?

In theory, if you match the bitrate, codec, thumnail format, etc, but many have tried unsuccessfuly to use the camera as a playback device.
Search around and you'll see even stills not taken on the camera have trouble!

You're far better off getting a dedicated playback device, like an mp4 player/ipod video etc.

I was able to edit a few clips 1280x720 off of a Sony Cybershot and export my edit out of Premiere in the same format the camera uses to record.
And then go in and rename my clips and my folder struckture just like the camera makes it and it played back in the camera.

I have not tried it with my 60D, but now I'm interested to find out so after work tonight I'll let you know.

I have played stuff back on my iPhone or iPod, but I usually use a laptop.
*in Arnold's voice* "I'll be back"

There are other threads in which many have tried and failed. Maybe Sony's platform is more forgiving, but all Canons AFAIK will reject any foreign content. Same is true of their powershot point and click line last I checked.

I personally wouldn't bother... why do you even need this? For timing, I used to either play off a laptop or even my cell phone (which happened to have video out support to an ntsc monitor, which was awesomely useful!) when we needed to choreograph something based on an earlier recording.

With little media players being so cheap these days (sansa, etc, less than a good SD card), you'd be much better off with that and leaving your camera for what it does best.
