recording HD in laptop ?

Hi,

I'd like to:

- Have a computer on the set and record 720P direct to it via firewire in a large HardDisk;

- Have a good display to check the footage (but not so expensive, like the sonys);

- Sometimes record in the P2 card and transfer to the same computer.

What you suggest ?
I was thinking in a desktop MAC with FCP, but also considering a laptop with P2 card reader and am extra display with component IN.
What more could I use to record HD footage on the go ?

Thanks for any advice,
Ulisses

A MacBook (not pro) will record directly to FCP 5.1.4 if that answers your question.

But a MacBook Pro is a better solution. The new EC/34 to PC Card adapter from duel systems will give you a reader in a couple of weeks.

Thanks David,

Is FCP the only solution to record HVX200 footage on the go ? It supports all recording modes / frame rates ?

Thanks Barry,

What format DV Rack will capture ?
About the Sony SZ, can it read the P2 card directly ?

Ulisses

DV Rack 2.0 HD can capture to AVI type 1, AVI type 2, Quicktime, a Canopus AVI, all sorts of formats.

And yes, the Sony SZ has both PCMCIA and ExpressCard slots, so it can read the cards directly. However, you'd want to get one with WinXP as the P2 Windows Vista drivers aren't released yet(!)
