F35: recorder options for F35

Just a quick question here. To get 12 bit 4:4:4 from the F35 I only need the 7Q, not the &Q+ right? Any additional licenses needed? I am looking to pick one up and just want to make sure I get the right thing. Thanks.

pretty sure there was an update to the plain 7Q to allow 12-bit 444 from the F35, but you better hear it first hand from Mitch, or someone else who's actually done it.

I recently picked up a non "+" 7Q for use with the F35, and yes it will do 444. The 7Q+ just added 4k over HDMI. Both models enjoy the same firmware updates.

What I'm still figuring out is how best to switch between 24p_444 and 50p_422. It currently seems like I have to change the Sony camera input settings on the Odyssey each time I switch modes on the camera, and this takes about 3 minutes. Any insight from experience Odyssey users on this would be appreciated.

Yep, 7Q is all you need for the F35. From memory, the 7Q+ simply adds 4k HDMI recording, other than that, I believe the two are supposed to be identical.

Thanks guys for the help it is appreciated. How about the Gemini v the 7Q. I am assuming the 7Q is better supported and the only one that can do 12 bit 444 but don't know much about it.

David is this for your F35? Did you decide to keep it?

For F35 my plan was to buy AJA SDI multiplexer, put inside IF box and then use 5" Blackmagic Video Assist as HD recorder. At NAB BMD just announced a 7" 4K version... except I think to get 4K you need HDMI.

Yes it is and yes I have decided to keep it. I sold the Codex and am looking into getting the odyssey. That is a good idea about the mutiplexer if you can fit it in there, I considered the VA but I don't think it can do 444. In the end just couldn't let it go.

I really dont understand the logic of the sound devices over the 7q. Even with sound board removed you wont fit multiplexer in the if box. Also i dont think sound devices ever solved the 109% white in 12-bit mode, if you look back ed david who used it had clipping problems. This is something cd had to specifically work in for f35.

Trust me I know the feeling. I turned down an F35 after convincing myself to get one. Every day I dream about being united with one.

No the BMDVA won't do 444. Only 422 but up to 50p in full HD which is nice. I actually JUST got my BMDVA 5" and I absolutely love it. It's so damn crisp and nicely built. I can't wait to use it with my F55 in place of my OLED VF. I don't even plan to record with it, but maybe for those pesty ProRes clients....

Do you really think you need 444?

Not always but would be nice to have the option. The main issue I have will just about everything else is the need for a multiplexer which I would rather not deal with.

Was that fixed in the 7q finally?

Quick important question.

I noticed at the recorder options page, in the section wireless no mention of the Paralinx.
Is that because the Paralinx has an issue with the F35 (psf?) signal?

Thanks!

Anyone know if the Shogun Inferno will fully support F35 and F23 now it has dual-link SDI enabled?

As far I as I know the only modern recorder than can record the dual link format from the F35 is the 7Q. It is a very old format and even the 7Q has lost some support for it in its latest firmware updates.

I am almost positive that the Shogun will not recording it without a multiplexer.

I thought an SDI signal was a standard thing, not a specific type of output like a RAW signal, is that not the case? The Inferno has dual and quad link now so I thought it would just work.
Steve

The signal from the F35 is archaic dual link HD PSF. So it is it dual link progressive scan but in sent in fields, as I understand it, something that is no longer used. There is a reason almost everyone uses the 7Q.
