Record Length

What is the maximum record length for any clip on the 7D? I read only in 4gb increments? Is that true? How long in 1080/30p?

Yep. The CF cards are formatted FAT32, meaning that they support a maximum 4GB file size which turns out to be about 12 minutes whether you are shooting 1080p or 720p.

Does anyone know - it seems that Canon could enable file spanning (as done in the GH-1) to simply have the camera create a new file and automatically begin recording to it after the first 4GB? Is this something that could be fixed/hackered in a firmware release?

...but then the EU tax man would attack! Better to cripple the camera for the rest of the world. ;-)

Yes, from what I've read it seems to be an EU tax issue.
Any device that can record 30 minutes or more of video is considered a video camera - and subject to a 4.9% tax as such.
So 4gb may equal 12 minutes in HD... but I think the more significant limit is that in SD the camera cuts off at 29 minutes and 59 seconds
(seen on page 157 of the 7D manual)

Seems they could have released two versions....
of course, that's not exactly cost effective.

I wonder if the record limit is something that can be changed in a firmware upgrade?
That way, Canon can still sell a camera that is not considered a video camera by European tax laws.... but it could be updated after purchase.

Doubtful it would happen - but that would be one way around it.
:)

Kind of a weird law...

But it does seem that an optional firmware would be relatively easy to offer if there was enough support for it. Of course, we've all already bought the camera now, so there's not a whole lot of incentive for Canon to add anything so long as it isn't broken...
