Record directly into laptop HD?

I tried to search for my answer, but I didnt find anything that was directly related to my questions, so here it goes:

Can you record directly into the Harddrive of a laptop?
If so, would you need <any> size p2 card and a pcmcia slot or how does it work?

my laptop doesnt have pcmcia, but it does have expresscard, does anyone know
a good adapter that can give me pcmcia from expresscard?

Thanks

What kind of camera and laptop? There is a PC app from Adobe that will capture live via 1394, and I believe FCP can do it too.

Sorry, I did mean the HVX200 and well, I have a PC laptop, which brand isnt relevant I beilieve but if so, then I have a Philips Freevents X56, real cute thing.

Oh alright. But will that require a P2 Card of any size like I mentioned before?

Is it that.. Adobe premiere perhaps? Premiere is pretty much like FCP.

I should have figured you were looking to dump P2 cards... Duh! Premiere is an editing program, but Adobe acquired Serious Magic's DV Rack, it is now called On Location, not Live. Anyways, it does do live capture from the camera, while analyzing the footage for problems. It is also included with CS3. Sorry about that.

Thanks Jimerson, and you to Qurik! You dont have anything to be sorry about, you're replying and helping someone, call me ridicioulus but I find that very admireable seeing how loads of people act today.

; Great! I just got OnLocation a week back, but when I bought it I thought it would allow me to use my laptop 12" as a LCD for helping me focus, perhaps it does that to!

I strongly recomend Onlocation on a PC.

Try not to record to your laptop's drive, it is not capable of record HVX200's HD data and will give you a very frustraing xperience.

Instead use a SATA=USB external drive (a 2.5 portable will work) self powered or powered trough USB port.

See this enclosure:

add any sata drive.

Remenber that SD signal travels trough a max of 100 feet Firewire cable but HD only 15 feet cable.

That's a generalization. There are quite a few internal laptop hard drives that will easily outperform any external USB or Firewire hard drive. My old 1.5GHz P4M laptop could do it, and so can my 1.86GHz C2D.

My recommendation would be to try it and see what the performance is like. If you have a modern SATA laptop drive -- especially one with perpendicular recording technology and regardless of spindle speed -- it should work fine for capturing any form of DVCProHD.

I can capture via firewire to edius broadcast 4 straight to the laptop no problems, don't need a P2 card in either.

I'm using the addonics adaptor which seems to be doing alright.

Alright. Good replys, thankies thankies.

so I can record 1080/60 full, sweet hd directly into the usb2 connected external sata harddrive plugged into my laptop then?

15 feet is enoght for me:)

Thanks for the adaptor input, the ones I found are quite expensive thought.

I don't think so.

USB2 isn't likely to keep up with the bandwidth required by 1080/60.

This is based on my professional experinece about 5 years recording digital video to Computers since 1st. DVRack version.

Seriously, I don't trust a system laptop drive to record in a serious commercial job where time is money and effort.

I suffer many problems until I get a reliable, self powered, external 5400 RPM (now I have a 7200 SATA-USB) external drive.

Maybe anyone can "make function" any drive but I prefer to go the sure way.

I do this trough EDIUS, only 1080 or sd. For the expresscard, I use addonics adapter, because the duel don`t work with my HP laptop

i can record directly to my mac book pro with final cut studio in hd? i.e. no need in a p2 card?

Yes, while I personally haven't done it, I believe you can do that provided you're not using a PN mode.
